InactiveThe ped gi and I talked about having a go at weaning to a lesser dose of Zegerid for Lucas….he’s just gotten over the croup and I legitimately forgot his zegerid dose three nights ago. He slept great– even better than usual, so I have skipped it three nights in a row. I just figured I’d run with it since he slept so well. Days are great, and the three nights have been great.
I’m just wondering, do I know immediately that this is okay, or will it take a month or something to tell if he’s really going to make it on less of a dose? Like, since it’s been in his system like this for so long, will it take a while to get his tummy producing acid like “normal” and therefore take a while to know the true effects of taking him to a reduced dose? I’m wondering also if I should start up aloe vera again for good measure…
The ped gi said I would “know”/be able to tell if he’s tolerating the weaning from meds– within a week….but I want to know what the REAL experts think (hahahahahaha).
I’m so happy that he’s sleeping well, but I don’t want to set us up for disappointment if it’s going to get worse or something once it’s really getting out of his system.
His dose was 9.5 mls in the am, and 9.5 in the pm. I have dropped the pm but kept hte am dose. We use the 40mg packet, mixed with 16.5 mls of water.
Thanks for any info!

InactiveAnne,
Colt was on the same dose and every once in awhile I forget his morning dose and I swear he sleeps better in the evening. So I really don’t know if that is a side effect but it sure seems like it might be.

InactiveSorry I don’t have any advice Anne, I just wanted to wish you good luck with the weaning! Interesting to note that he slept better without the PPI at night. Someone else once mentioned the same thing, I think Marsha (lansima). Wouldn’t it be cruel if a side effect of the med was sleeplessness!!!!!
Glad to hear he’s doing so well overall.June 12, 2006 at 10:12 am #9598Anonymous
InactiveHi Anne –
I thought I’d jump on here because we’re currently weaning Owen from his Prevacid and we’ve had the same question. We stopped giving him his morning dose on May 27th and haven’t noticed any differences with him at all. I wasn’t sure if something was going to show up later or what, but it’s been a full two weeks now and so far, so good. We just started to reduce his evening dose on Friday, and are going to gradually decrease it each day until he’s not getting anything. I don’t know if that even matters but we just don’t want to take him off of all of it cold turkey.
Anyway, we haven’t really noticed anything at all yet but like you, I’ve been wondering if it’s going to show up in a month or something, but I’m just not sure. Congrats on the better sleeping though – I hope that for your sake it continues!

InactiveAs the others have said, a gradual reduction in dosage is much better than stopping suddenly, which can cause a rebound effect.

InactiveThanks for all the info. Like others, we have always noticed that if we missed a dose accidentally there usually was better sleeping. I tried weaning him off zegerid last summer (he was around 11 mos old) thinking if he slept better, then why take it?– and it was a disaster.
Anyway, we had three great nights, then last night wasn’t so good. –he nursed for nearly an hour like when he’s teething, the comfort nursing where I can’t get him off without lots of crying. He woke up earlier than usual today and was very grumpy and fussy– very unlike him. Today he also woke from a nap about an hour into it, which he hasn’t done in a long time. Not sure if this is what the ped gi meant when he said “you’ll know if it’s not working.” I’m so hesitant to slip into something worse than what we had that I’m not going to wait long, maybe another night or two, before going right back to the old dose….it’s so hard to really know what’s upsetting them!
Joel, was giving up one whole dose (the evening dose) too drastic in your opinion? If he starts waking a lot and seeming in pain would that be the rebound effect?

InactiveAnne, I would ask Dr Phillips about that one, but it doesn’t seem to me that it would be enough of a reduction to cause a rebound effect. It could just be that he still needs more than that in order to control his acid.

InactiveWell, he woke up from his nap yesterday crying and arched his whole little body like crazy for ten minutes, i couldn’t get him to stop. He was so grumpy and this is NOT like him at all. I caved in and gave him his evening dose of zegerid. He slept much better, not waking until 4:30 am. (It’s only 5 am now). I guess I shouldn’t push a good thing if it’s working, nad if he needs his meds, then he needs them.
Joel, have you ever heard of giving the ppi full strength every other day or for several days regular strength and then giving less for a few days and then back to giving regular dose again? I’m wondering if we could do that sort of pattern for a while once it’s back in his system fully?

InactiveNo, I’ve never heard of that Anne, but that would definitely be a question to run by Dr Phillips rather than me. It sounds to me like he’s just not ready to wean off it yet, but again, I would get Dr Phillips’ input.
