Hi All-
I have a question for those of you who have weaned off of Zantac. I had heard somewhere before moms talking about a fast wean (cold-turkey style) instead of the gradual process that our Ped GI recommends. So I’m looking for more info about that.
My daughter is 20 months old and is currently on Prevacid and Zantac. (She takes the capsule form of Prevacid, 1 1/2 capsules daily, and 3 ml of Zantac each night). She seems to be doing very well and has not had a problem for over a month (is it possible!?).
So I would like to try AGAIN to wean her off one of her medications and see if she can handle life without them. I’ve decided to start with the Zantac, and under the instruction of our Ped GI, am going very slow.
For the last few days, we’ve cut back her Zantac dosage by 1 ml (so she’s taking 2 now instead of 3). The first few nights went fine, last night she did moan a little in her sleep, which is what usually happens right before things get bad and we all start losing a lot of sleep.
I thought I’d try one more night, but if she can’t sleep well I may give up at that point. I’m willing to accept it if she’s just not ready and still needs the meds, but was curious. Is it possible that she just needs to adjust to the absence of the Zantac and then she’ll be fine? I thought I’d read somewhere before that some moms had tried a more cold-turkey approach and reported that there was an initial reaction for a few days and then their kiddos were fine. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
I want to stick it out long enough to really give it a shot, but also don’t want to put her through unneccesary pain if she still needs the Zantac.
Any input would be helpful. Thanks!
