Went to the pedi GI~~ long~~still upset

Sorry this is so long. He said I have a happy spitter. He said he does not care if she spits up 100 times a day. As long as she gains. So this is what he wants to do. He took her of the cereal in her formula. We go back in a week. We will weigh her if she lose we will talk about what to do. If she gained he will take her of the Prevacid. He does not think she has reflex and if she does it is not bad at all. I just have this feeling something is wrong. I can’t get reid of this feeling. My husband had a Hernia at birth. Can she have one because he had one? Today she has been fusses.

This is what I told him. What do ya’ll think she has from what I said?

I breastfeed for the first two weeks she did fine. Then I could not breastfeed and had to stop. We put her on Similac Advance with iron ready to feed. She did fine for alittle while then she started to spitting up. The Dr said that some baby’s can not handle the ready to feed to try the powder. Well again she did ok for a little while. This is the symptoms she started with spitting up alot. Coughing and gagging all the time and hicups alot. Wanting to eat all the time. So I brought her in to the Dr. She said to thicken her formula with one to two teaspoons of cerel per oz. So that did fine for a few weeks. Then she started crying for no reason. The only way to make her stop crying was to feed her. I could hear her stomach making sounds and stuff coming up but nothing would come out. She would make funny faces. Like in pain. I called the Dr and she said I had a fussy baby. So we changed Dr’s. The other one did not want to do anything. That was about 5 weeks old (3-16-07). Then they put her on liquid Zantac 0.5 ml three times a day. With the same formula and putting 1 tablespoon of cerel per oz. That worked for about a month. Then she started throwing up again and screaming once in the middle of eating. So they uped her Zantac to 0.8ml three times a day and soy formula. As long as she was on the ready to feed she was ok. They gave me ready to feed samples at the Dr’s office. I tried her on the concentrated and powder. That made it worst. I brought her back in. (4-18-07) She had a rash. It was like dry spots. I asked the Dr what it was he said eczema . Well then they put her on Prevacid 1/2 a pack and Similac Alimentum which was going really good as long as she was on the ready to feed. Again the Dr’s office give me that as samples. Well after putting her on this formula the rash / eczema went away. Then I did not know you were suppose to give her the Prevacid 30 mins to a hr before eating and that you have to get all the white beeds. So I started doing that. So Then I went to get my WIC and found out they would not pay for the ready to feed and they do not make concentrate and they only get the powder in the Similac Alimentum. So they put her on the concentrated Nutramigen and added a tablespoon of rice per oz. of formula. Now this formula she is having a hard time with gas. She now pulls her little legs up all night. She is still throwing up like CRAZY. So I went back in. ( 5-7-07) He said he does not think she was getting her meds right. Here is what he wants to do. He did put her on the Prevacid SoluTabs 15 mg in am dissolve by month. I ask if I can try Oatmeal cerel and he said yes. Also I found a new formula that just came out called Similac Advance Sensitive R.S. He said I could try it if I wanted to. I did for a day or so and she still spit up so I went back to the concentrated Nutramigen. I have been going back and forth with the rice and oatmeal cerel. Her gas is getting better with the gas drops now. It seems like she can only handle the ready to feed in any formula. She does worst on the powder and concentrated. On the ready to feed it so thick. It is like honey or something it is so thick. I hold her up after eating for 15 to 30 mins. She is always in her swing. She sleeps on her back. Loves to play on her back all day. She hates to be on her stomach. She does not cry or scream when she is on her back. Never has. She sleeps all night without waking up. She just coughs and chokes sometimes in her sleep. Now she will be taking a nap during the day and just cry out for no reason. She is drools alot. Still sleeps all night. She likes to be held. She has stopped crying in the middle of eating. Now she crys when you try to burp her and gets stiff like a board and that is not every feeding. I give her the bottle cold now that I am giving her concentrated. When she was on power it was room temp. The concentrated is really thick sometime and thinner other time. I donot know what is up with that. I make it like it says. She was on nursey water . I took her off of it because they said the floride can cause gas and spitting up. I put her on regular Ketwood water. Maybe there is a little different and maybe not. I tried to give her the formula without the cerel over the weekend and she did ok.

It is getting so frustrated. I hate to see her like this. She throws up all over the place. I really do not understand she is a VERY happy baby. She laughs and smiles all the time even when she throws up or spits up.

ok is she happy or fussy/in pain? you say she’s happy in the beginning and end of your post but in the middle you mention pain…

I would maybe ask for a swallow study? this is to see how (maybe even why?) she can only handle the thicker feeds- it watches her swallow liquids of different thicknesses- then maybe WIC will pay for whatever the outcome of the study is?

I’m just rambling here…

it seems like you’ve made a lot of changes…unfortunately it seems with reflux you hav to give each change a good 2 weeks ot really see/know if it works

This is so hard. Only b/c you say she is ok on her back and for my refluxer, he would scream for hours after being on his back, I am not sure about anyone else’s baby though. They usually cannot be flat on their backs without acid coming up, but hey, stranger things have happened. I suppose not every baby with A.R. has to have ALL of the symptoms all of the time.

I was thinking the same thing Laura mentioned about the swallow study. Since you mentioned that most of her fussing is during feeds. The swallow study will show how she swallows (different thicknesses) and if she is aspirating anything into her lungs. That would def cause crying during feeds and maybe explain why she is ok at other times during the day? I’m just making shots in the dark. You must be beside yourself b/c this one is complicated. I am sorry sweetie! I hope things get sorted out soon.

My only other advice is to stick with 1 formula for a while. Give it 2-3 weeks. Maybe stick with Alimentum or Nutramigen. With all of the changes it would be hard to tell if the Nutramigen was what was really causing her gas (also, my baby would pull his legs up during a reflux flare and with all the changes it could have just been reflux).

Like the other ladies have said, both of my refluxers could not be on their backs and they screamed in pain all the time until they were medicated correctly. Also, Like Laura said you have to give each change a few weeks to work. It is common with a refluxer for things to work for a week and then all of a sudden to stop working. I have no idea why, but that is very common.

I’m wondering if it is something to do with the eating. Just curious why did you have to stop bfing? I am asking because it might help me to futher know what is going on. There a few eating issues that babies can have that would make a bfing mother stop bfing. Hope that makes sense.

Laura~~ When she was around 5 wks old she would cry for hrs at a time but would still sleep all night. That stop as fast as it started. But now she just wakes up in the middle of a nap and crys bloodly murder. Or when I try to burp her the last week she srceams bloody murder. I really donot know hot to explain what she does.

Shelby~~ I stop BFing because one BB would have milk and did not. She latched on like a pro. We did not have any prombles with that. I just was not making milk.

I don’t really have any advice on the formula, but I believe if you have a prescription from your doctor stating that she can only handle the RTF formula, WIC should pay for it. The nutritionist at WIC told me they can basically get most anything you need if you have a prescription from your doctor. I hope you can figure something out!

Everything you are describing now does sound like reflux. I would say to do some research like check out marci-kids.com and then go back to your doc.

The fact that she vomits/spits up means that she does have reflux, GER at the very least. The question is whether it’s GER or GERD. It sounds like she’s sleeping well, gaining, and is happy over all. The question for me is whether or not she’s feeding well.

I’ m really new to this board and it’s been such a huge lifesaver to me so I’m glad you found it. Your situation sounds so identical to mine except Kate, my daughter is still breastfeeding and it’s still really hard. she is gaining weight like a champ which I think misled our first two peds(we’re on our third, a good one I think!)to tell me it was colic. I don’t think so. She is also a really happy baby. LOVES to be on her back(changing table, play), and sleeps on her back pretty well now in her bassinet.(she’s on 30mg of prevacid and she definatley has some food allergy so I’m doing TED. Fun!)Her problems circle all around feeding and poop. She shows many Sandifer symptoms during a feed though because she’s in so much pain. It’s funny, I knew she was acting funny but the previous docs dismissed my concerns that her behavior was seizure like. Now that I know it has a name it makes me furious.Anyway, I’m still trying to stick with bf but it’s hard. I have OALD too which makes everything worse. We’ve got everything! Anyway, she has the same behaviour though as your daughter in that she’ll sporatically scream, stiffen, whimper, twitch(Sandifer’s), pulloff the breast bla,bla,bla the list goes on. I kind of forgot what my point was because I’ve been rambling(oh, Kate chokes, coughs, spits-up, and hiccups constantly too)…oh! I just wanted to let you know to stick with your instinct when you think somethings up. I’ve learned that the hard way.The other ladies are right too in sticking with one thing for awhile. It’s hard to wait it out but I tried so many things at once so when Kate showed a little relief, I had no idea what it was from.Plus, it takes time for stuff to show it’s working. Anyway, there’s hope. You’re here, and you’ll find a ton of great info and support which is so critical when our kiddos are suffering.

Oh and also, it is so confusing when your baby is mainly happy but also sooo miserable sometimes. Kate also throws up so much all day it surprises me every time she gets weighed and gains. i swear i hold my breath every time. It was so comforting for me to read your post because it sounds so much like KateFeel free to send me a private message because it always helps to vent. Good luck! I hope your sweet baby gets relief soon, she will!

Oh also, sorry, make sure you feel good about your ped too. It’s so important to feel comfortable and confident in their ability to help your baby. We again learned that from this forum so i just kept on switching till we found a great one thank goodness!I feel so much more willing to ask my millions of questions without feeling like they think I’m crazy. I’m so neurotic though I’m sure they’ve already flagged my file
