What are these symptoms of?

Hello everyone,

I have a little boy 16 weeks old with many symptoms of reflux and allergy/sensitivity. I figured it would be helpful to come here with parents who experience these on a daily bases. If you could please help us, I would be very appreciative. These are his symptoms:

– wakes up screaming

– projectile spit ups occasionally

– spits up frequently

– barely ever burps (has started to after every feed since starting TED)

– takes 45 minute naps (increased to 1-2 hrs since starting TED)

– wakes up every 2-3 hours at night

– has already had 2 nursing strikes

– only wants to eat in side lying position since Mother’s Day (Mother’s Day was the 1st nursing strike, and he started letting me feed him upright since starting TED)

– mucusy bm’s with barely any “seeds” (has turned completely liquidy since starting TED)

– bm’s are sometimes frothy and have streaks of red blood

– fusses when falling asleep and turns head and upper torso towards bed

That’s all I can think of right now. The pedi said it could be an anal fissure, dairy sensitivity and/or reflux. She prescribed prevacid that she had made into a liquid, A&D ointment and stopping dairy. I decided to do the TED because everything has dairy, and I was tired of reading everything. I also decided to wait on the prevacid because he had a cold and was choking on it.

Here is my problem and where I need help. I started the diet Tuesday, today is Friday. I have already seen improvement. Is this too early to see improvement or is it all a coincidence? I have called the pedi but haven’t received a call back. Last night he woke up twice screaming again. Today, I stopped the diet cold turkey because I lost 3 pounds in 3 days and was very sick last night because of not eating enough even though I ate the whole day. Now tonight, my son has woke screaming several times and is turning his upper torso again like his tummy hurts. Is this also too quick to see symptoms from putting a food back in my system that he is allergic/sensitive to? If anyone has experienced similar symptoms or can offer some help, please share.

yes the symptoms can come on quickly from mama eating the offending protein. I would go back to the TED and try to find some high fat foods (good fat) that you can eat!

Hi! Yes, yes, yes! Your db definitely is reacting to something in your diet. The TED sounds like it was CERTAINLY working. I only have a few minutes but wanted to chime in b/c I have been where you are.

Here are my suggestions:

1) Go back on TED

2) Check out one of my links Laura provided that has how to do limited diet but still maintain milk supply (it’s ok to lose weight just not more than 1-2lbs/wk).

3) Keep a journal w/ everything you eat, your weight, calories, fat grams, protein, water/liquid intake, db’s diapers, db’s stinky gas, db’s naps & nighttime sleep.

The diapers may get worse before they get better b/c it can take a long time for the little ones colons to heal. It took my ds 6 wks of being on TED before the mucous & blood stopped (but he was much more comfortable within days). When the stinky gas is gone, the offender is out of your system. This is the BEST indication to track what you’re eating, etc since the diapers take much longer to regulate.

Is your ds having reflux symptoms? (ie: back arching, etc) or maybe just more GI symptoms (ie: wiggly, fidgety, can’t get comfy tummy-wise). He could certainly have both (2 of my boys had both) just wondering if you could hold off on the Prevacid for a bit longer. Also, the liquid form (compounded) Prevacid is probably not made correctly &/or dose may not be high enough so it may not even be effective. That being said, if he is having both GI issues + reflux he won’t be totally comfortable until both things are addressed & under control.

I know it’s all so overwhelming & sorry if my post is jumbled – I have 3 kiddos @ my feet :).

Thank y’all so much. I considered foremilk/hindmilk imbalance because sometimes his bm’s are “darker.” They have only been bright green once. It is a possiblitity because the first 3 weeks, I EP’d. I could get between 6-8 oz per breast per pump. Now that I am EBF’ing, my production has gone way down. I know because I had to pump during his nursing strikes. We have only used one breast per feed since the beginning though. Since stopping the TED, the blood has not returned. Tomorrow will be a total of 1 week gone. The mucus is back but isn’t much. There are also now “seeds” since stopping. His gas is only occasionally stinky. This kid has me so confused. 🙂 FTM can’t you tell. Yesterday, we gave him a dose of prevacid. Again, he spit most of it out, but minutes after, he stopped screaming. He did not want to eat, sleep, lay down or be held. I don’t know if it was a coincidence or not. Then, I thought maybe he was teething because the fussiness came back at night. He has been chewing on everything, drooling a whole bunch and pacifiers from the freezer made him stop screaming. We tried teething tablets, but it didn’t seem to help. Sometimes I feel like nothing is wrong while other times I do. It could be anything or a combination of foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, teething, anal fissure, allergy/sensitivity, reflux, anxiety, normal baby fussiness and/or pacifier dependence (wakes up when it falls out sometimes). As far as reflux vs GI issues, idk. He spits up a couple times a day and throws his body towards the bed like in these videos.

This is when different things started.

Birth to 3 weeks- I pumped and bottle fed. Sleeping was good. Didn’t burp very much. Had hiccups all the time. No other problems

5 weeks- mucus in bm’s. Went through a very fussy period I think because of not getting enough sleep.

6 weeks- sick.

6 weeks 4 days- mucus went away but came back, fussing, not nursing as much, not sleeping as good I believe during the day, gnawing on our fingers, slobbering, dry cough, slept almost 5 hours in a row.

7 weeks- started putting him down for naps when he first yawned, he was much happier.

9 weeks 2 days- pushed his feedings back from every hour to every 2 hours, slept 5 1/2 hours at night.

10 weeks- caught a cold, coughing, slobbering, increased bm’s, woke every 2 hours at night.

10 weeks 4 days- first blood tinged bm, greenish, happened periodically after this

11 weeks- 1st nursing strike that lasted 4 days, happened right after going to a stimulating public place, would drink from a bottle, stopped letting me nurse him sitting up, bm’s started to smell different and were “muddy” looking

12 weeks- finger chewing

13 weeks- greenish bm and blood again, dry cough

14 weeks- 2nd nursing strike, didn’t last as long, happened after crowded public place

14 weeks 4 days- bad cold, runny nose, sneezing, coughing

15 weeks 2 days- started TED, hard night, had to walk 3 hours to get to sleep

15 weeks 5 days- stopped TED

16 weeks 1 day- today, was really fussy yesterday and refused to eat for awhile again after going into a crowded public place

So what should I make of this all? Sorry it’s long, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. Thank you again.

I would try TED for a full two weeks…
and I would ‘check’ meds to make sure they are PROPER dose and FORM

I would go back on TED & like I said above, keep a detailed journal (seems like you’ve been doing that though). The diapers shouldn’t be muddy, mucousy or green. They should smell ‘sweet-smelling’, be yellow & somewhat seedy (or very seedy is fine too). There should be no stinky gas.

It can take a long time for the blood to go away. It took 5 wks w/o stinky gas (so I was eating the correct things) for my 2nd ds’s blood to finally go away. Their little colons are so sensitive & can get torn up & irritated so easily & harshly. That’s why it’s so important to track the stinky gas b/c THAT’S when you’ll know that you’re eating the right thing/baselining.

I quit dairy only instead of the TED just to see if anything changed and the next day the blood stopped. This got me wondering if it was an allergy at all because that’s a little too quick. I saw where hellbennt said that it could be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I started reading about it, and learned that it can cause blood in stools. I block fed today and started dairy again. No blood and I was able to rock my son to sleep for the first time in awhile. Maybe this is the answer. I’m praying. 🙂 I am still keeping a detailed journal. The diapers are more orangy yellow now with some seeds. I definitely know what you mean by the stinky gas. When he had blood, I could tell before even opening the diaper. Thank y’all for everything.
