InactiveI posted here the other day about my little boy and how awful his reflux is. Thankfully we will be seeing a specialist on the 20th. Good heavens I hope he can help. I have another question that I think you can help with. Since Monday, he has not wanted to take a nap. He is fighting it like crazy. It use to be that he only woke up once during the middle of the night. The past few nights it has been often. Part of me thinks will I spoil him if I go in and pick him up, but the mom in me says who cares he needs me. When I go into his room he is up on all fours rocking back and forth crying. (He has just started sitting up all by himself and now is trying to crawl.) Do you think he’s crying because he’s hurting from all the spitting up he does, or do you think he is crying because he’s learning to crawl and???? I am so clueless and just want my sweet baby to sleep well. He is now so cranky all day long because he wakes up so often at night. Please help if you can! I think you ladies are wonderful and so helpful. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t find you!

Keymasterhere goes my opinion- take it or leave it

:I do not believe you can spoil a baby. I do not believe a baby can manipulate. I believe it takes a more developed brain as in perhaps a 2 yr old or even 3 yr old to be able to actually manipulate.I believe babies need to be comforted and held as much as they ask for it.I believe in doing whatever it takes to make your baby comfortable and to sleep. A sleeping baby means a sleeping mama (caretaker)! I believe that once you find something that works, then stick with it- if it ain’t broke don’t fix it- then when it doesn’t work anymore, find something else that does…I believe that until you know for absolute sure that the reflux is under control that a baby needs you more than ever and I do not recommend any type of ‘sleep training’ until thenNovember 7, 2007 at 6:57 pm #45155Anonymous
InactiveI would guess he is waking up because of reflux. I personally wouldn’t consider letting him cry it out until you know the reflux is under control. I am having the same issues with my daughter right now and am hoping she starts sleeping better once the reflux is handled.

InactiveCooper is a frequent waker and even more so when he is teething and/or has learned how to do something new. I know he doesn’t wake for reflux reasons as we have his pain under pretty good control, but he woke a ton when he was in pain. I still pick him up and rock him multiple times each night b/c he hasn’t learned how to put himself back to sleep yet and if I let him “wake” up too much at night then he is up for hours. I think every decision is personal but I don’t ever let Cooper cry at night if I can help it as it makes his reflux worse.

InactiveThank you so much for responding. Being a mom is really hard. I can’t stand to hear Alston cry. It hurts my heart! I’ve been getting up with him each time, but my husband says he thinks I may be spoiling him. This makes me laugh because everytime he cried tonight, my husband was talking to him or picking him up. I think on top of the reflux problem, he is cutting his two bottom teeth. I didn’t notice until tonight when he smiled at me. You can see them right under the gum. Hopefully, by the time he goes off to college he will sleep through the night!
Thank you ladies…you’re the best!November 7, 2007 at 8:00 pm #45162hellbennt

InactiveMy son would always rock on all fours crying (and often bang his head as he did this) when he was uncomfortable or in pain, whether it was reflux, food intolerance or teething. Every time he cut a tooth he would do the all fours rocking/crying/head banging. That just makes me think he may be in pain. I agree with the others that we aren’t spoiling our babies (especially refluxers) by going to them when we think they need us or if they are hurting! Do whatever your gut tells you to do.

InactiveI was going to guess teeth but looks like you have already gotten confirmation on that. Hope he goes back to your sleeping boy!
