Inactivequick update: went to lac consultant on Thurs and Norah was 7 lbs 15 oz. Lac consultant said this was fine weight gain, not great, but not bad. She suggested a different feeding position and feeding just on one side each time, both things to deal with overactive letdown. She also suggested mylecon (SP?) and that if it’s not better within a few more days to call the ped and begin zantac. Anyways, the last two days have been much improved. Hard to tell the difference between overactive letdown and reflux with what she was doing, but the last two days have been much better. I’m hoping that we’re treating the OAL and that this will be it. Thanks for listening. I’m still on the special diet for one more week, to see if these measures are helping with the situation. If things continue with no more blood in diapers, then I’ll begin adding back foods into my diet (I’ve also taken out anything acidic just in case). I guess you can only say this is good for the post prego weight loss….. cause I’m DYING for some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! ….and chocolate, and decaf coffee, and tomatoes …..

InactiveHey Anne. Ben had severe GERD, but it was greatly aggravated by my OAL. I think the LC is on the right track asking you to block feed… one side per feed. That really helps. I also found that reclining while feeding (on side, or even baby on top of you) helps slow the flow.
One thing that really helped us was to actually take Ben off my breast when the milk initially letdown (and sometimes throughout the feed, as I would letdown a lot), once the milk stopped spraying out, I would reattatch him. He HATED this, but it stopped the choking during feeds.I did end up doing TED for a LONG time and Ben was on a HUGE dose of Zegerid to help with the Acid, but everything I listed above really helped with the projectile pukes.Hang in there! Just reading your recent post about the stress and anxiety of nursing a refluxer brought it all back to me. My gut clenched in sympathy for you.

InactiveHi Naomi,
thanks so much for your message. I’m wondering about how do you know if it’s oal vs. reflux? Feeds have been on and off, decent and then horrible. Im on a restricted diet already, block feeding, feeding on an incline when i can, and we’re still having issues– still projectile vomits and lots of fussiness. Oh, and I’m unlatching her frequently during feeds. And using mylecon during the bad ones…this was per the lac consultant’s advice. I’ll probably post a new one about this issue but I’m not sure what else to do but call the ped and discuss zantac. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
