Okay, I need your input please. I suspect that this will get long, so I apologize in advance.
Alexandra has been doing really well overall. She’s on Alimentum RTF and 1 ml of zantac twice a day. It’s been working fairly well to control her reflux and keep her happy. When she’s teething we up the zantac or add mylanta and everything is fine.We did a comprehensive blood allergy testing at her 9 month appointment. It showed a mild milk allergy (1 out of 6) and came up negative for everything else. Unfortunately, those could easily be false negatives because she hadn’t been introduced to most of the foods. Between 3 and 7 months she had some major eczema, but it had mostly cleared up by 9 months. We decided to leave her on the Alimentum (even though it has milk proteins) because she seemed to be doing well on it. Plus, she was on neocate for 2 of the months when her eczema was so bad and it didn’t help at all.
So, here’s the problem. She has had a red patch on her chin for over a month. We thought that it was drool from teething, but I just looked at pictures of Kaelyn at that age and it looks just like the first allergy rash that she had. Now her legs are getting rashy/itchy again as well. We haven’t introduced any new foods in 2 weeks, so her legs couldn’t be due to that. So, I’m thinking that it’s an allergy that’s built up in her system over time.
I don’t know what to do now. I could switch to neocate again, but the cost was killing us and I don’t think it made a difference. Plus, I’m worried about her developing a corn allergy. I could switch to soy. We switched Kaelyn to soy at 16 months when we discovered her milk allergies and she’s done really well with it. But…. I’m allergic to soy, so it’s very possible that switching this early could trigger an allergy in her. (And maybe this is selfish, but I’d rather have to deal with both of them having a milk allergy, than one with milk and one with soy.
)Or… is she developing an allergy to one of the other foods that she’s been eating frequently. She loves apples (a problem for Kaelyn), pears, prunes, sweet potatoes, and squash so she eats a lot of them. Maybe they are the problem. Maybe I’m over reacting and it’s just a rash (but we just got their Easter pictures back and everyone that looked at them asked what happened to Alex’s chin). I don’t know….

Therese, I had just been assuming that it was due to the drool from teething and I hadn’t thought much about it. But with her legs starting to look like eczema again it just freaked me out. (Plus, her chin really does look bad in the pictures we just got back.)
Laura, I’m thinking about cutting out apples, because it is the easiest. If her legs and chin clear up then that would be a major sign. If not, then I can freak out again.
hmmmm, your concerns echo many of mine. Ben has an on and off again rash, redness on his face and several large patches on his back – of all places. I can’t pinpoint anything that sets it off, but I cannot get his back to clear up, though he doesn’t seem bothered by it! His bum tends to get red too, pardon the info. but right around the anus? Is this the same for your LO? Anyway, all I can figure is that it seems to get worse when his reflux is flaring up, and I had just finally decided that was it, but all of your questions make me wonder if the reflux isn’t flaring up because he is reacting to something. GRRRR… I just looked at what you list as Kaelyn’s allergies and Ben eats all but apples and milk so far. hmmm.
Kaelyn still gets the ring around her bottom if she eats something that she shouldn’t. Alex has been running a fever for three days and refusing to eat. A bad thing overall, but maybe it will make it easier to reintroduce foods and watch for allergy issues. Doubtful, but I can try to find the silver lining in a yucky illness.
Fortunately, dh took her to the doctor today and she has an ear infection (that’s probably related to the sinus infection she was just getting over). Hopefully, she’ll be feeling better soon.
The ring around the anus would make me suspect allergy instead of teething too, this was a sign when we retried a normal formula.
I have wondered though if the acid drool from teething gets all the way down the GI tract and can burn at the other end….just wondering, not sure if my logic is suspect.
Does anyone watch HOUSE, the TV show. I think sometimes it would be good to have a reflux HOUSE to help us work out these types of situations!
Skin prick testing is definitely an option for us. Kaelyn had hers done at 16 months and it was a huge help. Her ped would probably refer her to the allergist if I pushed. I guess I just wanted someone other than me to think that it was worth pushing.
