As said in my previous post in “help”, we have our next gi appt on March 3rd. The gi is probably going to have me take Michael off prevacid cold turkey and see how he does. Has anyone tried this approach? Any suggestions where to go from here? Any suggestions for the appointment?
His prevacid has been working great however he gets up every hour from 2 until 6. Not sure if this is habit or reflux or what. His longest sleep is about 9 hours and I have been told at 12 months he should be going 12. He eats like a champ and is still breastfed. I am not sure what to do. Some days I think he has outgrown it and it is in my head and I am looking for symptoms, other days I think, nope he still has it. Last night he was refluxing but I just don’t know if it was an isolated incident or if the medicine is just working that good. Any ideas?
February 25, 2006 at 4:41 pm #2484hellbenntKeymasterwhat I did with jonah outlines how I made my own ‘experiment’ to see why Jonah was waking up at night… I wrote about how I dealt with ending night nursing here- look for the purple post: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4769
From all I’ve read it is not a good idea to go cold turkey with the meds…Jonah’s getting off the meds: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2057&a mp;PN=1&TPN=1

When you woke Jonah before your bed, did you find that he started waking at that time on his own or did you continue to wake him. Did this eventually stop him from getting up at night with the plan you outlined? Also at what point did you stop waking him at your bedtime?
February 25, 2006 at 11:04 pm #2505hellbenntKeymasterIt was around 11pm and he was getting up around then, too, so it’s hard to know which came first…it started when I realized I had had enough with nursing him a few times in the night- he was 8 and 1/2 months old (I know this is ‘nothing’ for some!!!) at the time-and he was waking 11pm, 1am 3am, 5am- something like that-so I kind of took the 11pm feeding as one that I could ‘deal with’ –
he didn’t necessarily wake up every night at this time, and if he didn’t, then he’d wake up maybe at 12, etc. So, I figured I’d try and avoid the inevitable (sp) and beat him to the punch, so to speak…I thought maybe if he was full at 11pm then he’d last longer (didn’t happen!!)…but this was the first feeding, after his 8pm nurse-to-sleep feeding, that I chose to address…
so, after my 2 week (maybe it was shorter? definitely a week) experiment, I kept the 11pm feeding, with the feeling/belief that he needed it…
after ‘the experiment’ (for those just joining us, this was when I sent dh in to see if he truly was hungry or refluxing, etc),
and CIO worked for him sleeping after his 11pm feeding until whatever time it was that I metally deemed acceptable for him to wake up
(I think it was 4:30am bcse there was a stretch of time I vividly remember him waking up at 4:30am & me wondering why the heck my baby just couldn’t sleep in?!),
he actually dropped the 11pm feeding on his own, yay! This happened again with some consciousness on my part-it was after he was fine for some time sleeping that stretch from 11pm/whatever to 4 or 5am-
and I then decided “what would happen if I don’t go in there tonight at 11pm? hmmm?” And so I tried & I skipped nursing him then, fully aware that he just might wake up at 12/1/2/3 etc…I think I did this for about a week and during this time he did NOT wake up every single night like I thought he would- just some nights…So then I said “what the heck?” and I just dropped it and if he fussed I ignored him and maybe I wound up letting him CIO once or twice but I don’t even really remember…
so then we were down to just nursing at bedtime and when he woke up and then in the day…by 12 months we were down to just 2x a day (bedtime & wakeup)…by 13 or 14months it was just the morning and then at 15months he was weaned…

February 25, 2006 at 11:26 pm #2508AnonymousInactivethanks laura. That gives me some great ideas and things to try with Michael. I will start after the gi appt. Right now we are battling a stomach virus. I thought it was a vaccine reaction but I spoke with the ped and she said nope, it was a bug and it would run it’s course in about 48 hours. He is pooping through all of his pajamas, refluxing and hit a temp of 103.7 so into the bath we went with a dose of tylenol. The fever dropped for now. He is taking pedialyte mixed with water and is sleeping….for now, so I will try to get some z’s as well! You have been such a big help. Michael has such a mild case compared to most of the other little ones on here but you still take the time to help and that is truly appreciated. Thanks again to you and everyone.
