What to do next

To make a long story short. We tried the solutabs, they contain dairy and I am assuming that is what gave him the horrible tummy aches, well the GI told me to try soy becasue the nutramagen contains dairy as well. He did really well last night until we gave him the solutab, so I am not doing that anymore. He ate a total of only 8 ounces yesterday.

This am he was good, te 3 ounces then 2 1/2 then was in pain again, he will not take more than 1/2 ounce-1 ounce at a time. I am sure he will end up in the hospital again. So what do I do next? Upper barrium swallow?

He has never had one. If he were eating 17-20 ounces a day OK I can handle that, butnot 8 ounces in 24 hours. I also am giving him Mylanta and carafate inter changed. Any other suggestions.

The solutabs don’t have dairy, they have lactose which is milk sugar not protein and lactose intolerance is very rare in babies. Some babes on the site have had tummy aches when they first started solutabs that went away after a week or soy. I would be wary of soy b/c most babies with milk intolerances have soy intolerances as well. If you can’t tolerate nutramigen you may need to look at neocate or elecare which are amino acid based and very expensive but work wonders for really serious MSPI babies.

could it be the soy upsetting him?

unfortunately, every change takes about 2 weeks until you see the full effect-

so you might want to give the solutabs a full 2 weeks- I wouldn’t switch to soy at this time though, because like beth said, a large % of babies (I think it’s 40%) with intolerances/allergies to milk proteins also have difficulties with soy

HE was not eating well on the Nutramagen any longer so after talking to the GI, he said if he had a intolerance to the lactose/dairy I should try the soy. He ate really well on it last night and again this morning now he will not eat again. I have no clue what is going on. He is no worse on the soy than what he was off the soy.

well, like I said I would give the solutabs a full 2 weeks and if it’s (solutab dose) at or around the marci-kids dose, then you should see ‘good’ results after 2 weeks- sooner if you’re switching from one PPI to another

if you have any zantac (or pepsid or axid or tagament) I would also give this, given 4hrs seperate from the solutabs, until you see an improvement w/ the solutabs

The Upper GI, (also called a barium swallow?) is good to look for structural abnormalities, it is *not* good to verify reflux:

it is a snapshot in time if you were, so if baby doesn’t happen to reflux at that particular time of the test, then a dr might be quick to dismiss you & tell you reflux isn’t there/isn’t bad- the way to show reflux is a ph probe, where the actual length (duration) & frequency (how often) of reflux episodes are recorded…there also is an endoscopy where they check for inflamation, irritation, bleeding, ulcers and they take biposies to check for eos cells (the presence of these cells can indicate an allergy- a protein allergy)

I think everyone here has really good ideas. The only other thing that I would add is that Owen didn’t do well on nurtramigen at all but when we switched to alimentum it was like the magic switch that we’d been waiting for was flipped. He had tried soy before that and did really poorly on it, but alimentum was just what he needed…

Thanks for all the good info.

He has had the endoscopy and ph probe. Everything looked good as far as the endoscopy goes, the ph probe showed he has severe reflux. He started on the Allimentum and was real gassy and did not do well on it. He did really way on the Nutramagen until recently and that could just be the relux flare. He was on the compound prevacid to start and it worked well for about 1 1/2 weeks then went down hill. I read all the poor reveiws on the compound and that is when I asked for the solutabs. I will be patient with the solutabs and see what happens. I was going to go back to the nutramagen and he threw it all up. So I went back to the soy. I hate switching all this soo much but it is soo hard to find what works and works longer than a week. If he was not soo under weight to begin with, these spells would not worry me soo much!! Thanks again to all the replies it helps sooo much!!!!!

Can they do a test to see if he has an allergy? (I am new at all of this so if this is a silly question then I am sorry)

no question is silly!

allergy tests are pretty unreliable in babies

if you go to the main forum & click on the ‘mspi’ forum & then go to ‘mspi what I have learned & allergy info’

then go to page 2 & scroll down to just below where you see ‘google cache’ there’s an EXCELLENT explanation b/t the differences b/t intolerances & allergies

another way to find allergies is via an endoscopy- they send a camera down the esophogus into the stomach (maybe even farther into the small intestines?) & they take biopsies & if there are eos (eosopholitic?) cells then they signal an allergy- in that case it’s most likely milk proteins and/or soy- these are the ‘major’ allergies, thus the term MSPI…

also, look around page one of MSPI what I have learned & allergy info- you will learn a lot more there and I would also go look for ‘Reidun’s story & gathered information’ I *think* this post is actually in the Elimination diet forum, but it’s also full of good info

Sorry if you have answered this question before but will the Dr consider neocate? Or Zegerid? Also if bub is refluxing then he will have difficulties eating . I hope your bub adjusts to the solutabs soon.
