when to give meds

[Anonymous]

Hi ladies,

I hope you don’t mind me joining your forum, but I need some advice. My DS Darcy will be 12 weeks old this week. He is on 10mg of losec (omeprazole), I think you guys call it prilosec, twice a day. Recently zantac has been added to the mix as well. He is to take 5mls twice a day. He takes his losec at around 7am and 6pm, so when should he take the zantac do you think?

Thanks for your advice, we have no forums like this in Australia, and I was told to give him his meds together.

How are you giving the losec. If it’s a compound, be wary… there are correct ways to make these things, and they rarely are from my experience (but I’m certainly biased!). If it’s dissolving the pill or a capsule, make sure it’s given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30-60 minutes later. It needs to be given in something acidic like applesauce, just a bit, to protect the med.

I’ll bump two threads for you, I can’t link them well in the medications forum- one about compounded PPIs and the other about when to time the meds. Good luck. If no improvement, may be the form of the med, or the dose. In theory, there really is no reason to need the zantac with the losc if he’s been on the losec for a while and if the dose was doing it’s job. You may want to see if you can get your doc to add a midday 10mg dose instead, that may give better coverage and then he’d be on a good dose.

By the way, welcome to the forum!!! It’s really a great place and saved me from a lot of hard times with the reflux and medications. And I’m from Canada, so we also call it losec here. My experience was that they never wanted to give high doses of PPI, and then tried adding zantac, and then even a motility med like domperidone. Whereas if they just dosed high enough to begin with, they could avoid that all together.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I am giving a dissolvable tablet to him, with water and syringing it, should I try the applesauce still,or is this ok? I was wondering about the dose, because have noticed he goes downhill at about lunch time. I have been given the losec as 10mg tabs, do you think I could try one at lunchtime and see how he goes with this? He hates having the zantac, and gets quite upset.

Not sure what the dissolvable tablet is. Is it the losec MUPS? If so, we were also told to give it with water. (Or is it prevacid solutab??) But I don’t know what yours are like, so really not sure if it needs to be given in acidic or not. Maybe you could read the insert on the medication. It’s a personal decision whether or not to add an extra dose. Many people have done it (including myself), but I don’t feel right suggesting it to others. Good luck.

It says to give with water, so will stick with that. Decided to perserve with the zantac and give mid morning and mid afternoon, and see how we go, he took it a lot better today. If we are still having problems, may give the extra dose a go. Thanks for your input.

So ladies, if you live OS and can’t use buffer babies, is there something else I can use? Can I order it, or is it only available in America?Darcy had his morning dose about 2 hrs after a feed, as we had to go somewhere today, and his reflux is shocking. I am willing to try anything.
