Katey, I am glad the Reglan has helped Sebastian – but I think a PPI
instead would help much more. If he’s always been such a comfort eater
and not a big vomiter, I would doubt he has DGE. So the Reglan may seem
to help since it’s lessening the volume of food in his tummy and
therefore lessening tummy pressure and reflux – but it’s likely not
what he truly needs. I would definitely urge you to see a GI doctor and
discuss having him on a PPI instead – and you may start to see the
night wakings decrease once he gets on a good dose and isn’t in
discomfort anymore.April 18, 2006 at 8:07 am #6308AnonymousInactiveI really appreciated all of your advice. I would not be posting here if I did not want it. I have done A LOT of research over the past few months. Unfortunately, my insurance makes it nearly impossible to see a specialist, and there is no way we could afford to pay out of pocket for it.
I have given serious thought to asking my ped. For a PPI, but he is very conservative with meds. (something I really liked about him before all this reflux stuff stated) I know if he prescribed a PPI it would be at way too low of a dose, and most likely not be effective. I do not want to change peds. My only other choice is a large group where you don’t get to see the same Dr. Every time. I like having one person managing all of my son’s health care. And I really like this Dr.
I had my husband get me the studies sited on Marci Kids (he is a medical resident, so he got them at the library.) thinking that might help me convince my ped. about proper dosing, but when I read them there is no mention of infants under 8 months. Two of the studies where 8 months-15 years and the third was on one year olds.
From what I have learned about Reglan the major concern is the side effects and I have not seen any with my son. He is on a low dose, 1 mil total a day. If it gets to the point where this dose is no longer effective then I will defiantly push for the PPI before increasing the Reglan, but for now Sebastian is so much happier then he used to be I just don’t want to mess that up. The night waking is a pain, but compared to how my nights were a month ago it is heaven.
Thank you all for you advice. It is great to have people who don’t even know me or my son care about him so much. I have become adicted to this message board! It has been a big help to me.
April 18, 2006 at 10:08 am #6318AnonymousInactiveKatey, I had the same problem when trying to convince my doc to give Hailey a high dose of PPI. They said that the studies didn’t have such young infants in them. I’m glad that you have not seen any ill side effects on the reglan. For what it’s worth, giving motility agents is a common- though I understand controversial- practice here in Canada as well even if the baby doesn’t have DGE. But they do it on top of a PPI. The rationale is that if you can increase the contracting of the stomach and the small intestine and cause the stomach contents to move along faster, then there is less to reflux and/or vomit. The only difference is that we have access to motilium here which I understand is a safer option that is not available to you in the US. We tried motilium with hailey a while back, and I might try it again. I hope that your son continues to do well. I’m sorry that you can’t give him a PPI on top of it to help with the acid. s&h’s mum2006-4-18 10:9:0
April 18, 2006 at 8:04 pm #6351hellbenntKeymasterkatey, you state your position really well! you make total sense.
you might want to put ‘reglan & happy with it’ in your signature, in case we forget this thread and ‘bother’ you on another one
I’m glad we didn’t offend you (or at least not too badly!)

I’m chiming in late here, but wanted to mention that our ped was the one who originally rx’ed a ppi for my son, and at the time he had “never heard of putting a baby on a ppi drug” to quote him directly. I printed out all the MARCI-kids info and communicated directly with Dr. Phillips, the guy who developed zegerid– I just clicked on the link to email MARCI-kids at their site, http://www.marci-kids.com. Dr. Phillips came up with a dosing suggestion and gave his email and CELL PHONE number to me in case my doc wanted to contact him– i printed out all the emails to go with the MARCI-kids info and gave it to our ped. After reading through the info, our very conservative ped rx’ed a ppi. This was a small miracle to me at the time. Just a thought…
Lori,
YAY for the straight talk about this doc who thinks reflux doesn’t exist. I could really get myself worked up with what to say to these folks….THEY are the ones perpetuating the myth that reflux and sleep issues don’t go hand in hand and they in turn have had a direct effect on the lives of those of us with refluxers who don’t sleep!!! THANKS for putting this info out there
