InactiveDoes anyone know why it takes two weeks or more for prevacid to start working?

Keymasterthis should be somewhere in the Medicine Forum, one of the stickies…
it has to do w/ the shutting off of the pumps…I’ll shout out to Beth, LOL!June 29, 2009 at 3:26 pm #63107Anonymous
InactiveAlso, the pumps might be shut off, but then the esophagus needs a bit of time to heal, so that might take a couple of weeks as well….

InactiveSorry late to this. The proton pumps are what produce the stomach acid. It takes an average of 2wks (longer for some and shorter for others) for the medicine to “hit” all the pumps and turn them off. And ass Ann Marie said that it then may take even longer for the esophagus to heal depending the amount of damage that was there to begin with.

InactiveHow do you know if you need an increased prescription vs. it is just taking longer for the prevacid to work and heal the esophagus?

InactiveI would say in your case b/c he was started on meds at such an early age that you either need a dose increase or possibly look at diet (yours if you are bf or the formula he is taking) as I don’t “think” his esophagus is going to get but so damaged in 3wks. I know we were dealing with MSPI so we switched our formula first, then did zantac and then played with our dose of prevacid until we were at 30mg/day and then things started getting so much better.. but my lo was 8wks old before we did any meds and then 10wks old before we started prevacid… didn’t know what we were dealing with at first. HTH.

InactiveI am breastfeeding and have been eliminating foods from my diet. I am a very bland and picky eater so I don’t know what could be bothering him. I eliminated dairy and eggs, chocolate, I don’t drink caffeine, I don’t eat spicy I had pizza one time and that was a mistake. Any other suggestions?

Keymastereliminating dairy is hard/tricky because you must eliminate ALL milk proteins, even those that are ‘hidden’ as ingredients…you can take the approach of eliminating one thing at a time, or, you can go for it full force, which is referred to as TED Total Elimination Diet. there’s a forum all about this and links from groupie intro

I did the TED out of desperation, but I really didn’t think it was my diet…it was not…I don’t have your other posts in front of me (maybe add formula fed/breastfeeding or both and what diet, formula, etc to your signature) but anyway it’s hard to know what to do first- ie: diet, meds, etc. If your baby is on marci-kids dosing and the solutab is given properly (i would give in 2 doses but that’s just me) AND you’re even perhaps adding in any axid or zantac or pepcid or tagament you still have around and baby is STILL miserable (gas, fussy, straining to poop, rash) then I would then address diet as well…that’s just my two cents…
