InactiveI am curious to know why mom’s are adding the rice/oatmeal cereals to the formula, instead of buying the thickening formulas? Is it because your babies have certain intolerances and need a special formula and therefore you’re adding the cereals?
I ask because I’ve tried a thickening formula with my 12 wk old and it’s helped a lot. Adding rice/oatmeal gave DD horrible gas and discomfort. Although I’m breast feeding now (you may have read my other post) and not sure if I should continue, etc, etc, etc.
Anyone else feel like you just don’t always know what to do??
What is the difference between Prevacid/Prilosec vs. Zegrid? (sp?) Is Zegrid compounded? DD is getting Prilosec 2X daily. She is doing ok but spits up like crazy. I realize she’ll always spit up but during naps and night time is the worse. She can hardly nap during the day, but sleep ok at night for the most part. Doc won’t give higher dose. So I’m at a lose.
Thanks! Laura

InactiveI replied to your other post about the spitting…

Zegerid is omeprazole + sodium bicarbonate (buffer) Zegerid is compounded at home. It comes in little packets and you add water to them to make the compound.
Prilosec is omeprazole
Prevacid is lansoprazole

The reason its so much worse during naps/night is because she is laying down and she doesn’t have gravity working on her side. Is her bed raised on one end? You can put books under one end of the legs of the bed or they make wedges to put under the mattress. We used an infant positioner until Addy outgrew it. Here’s the link to one: http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?siteId=117&a mp;productId=424758&cm_ven=Google&cm_cat=Top%2520Sel lers&cm_pla=Top%2520Sellers&cm_ite=null
And remember, there are always other docs out there to get a second opinion from.

InactiveOk well the Ped told me to put DD on her belly to sleep because that is better for reflux babies. So she’s been on her belly for probably 6 weeks now and she does sleep better that way. Is it possilbe to raise the mattress while she’s on her belly? Anyone else do this?

Inactiveyes we used to elevate the mattress.

InactiveYou might consider a Danny sling or Tucker sling. We use this with Bryce. It basically holds them up on the inclined mattress so they don’t slide down. They can sleep on their tummy, side or back in it.
As for the thickening, we used to add cereal to Bryce’s breastmilk because it helped him keep it down a little bit better.

InactiveSometimes it helps to keep them upright for 30 minutes after a feeding before laying them down to sleep.
Yes, it’s fine to elevate with tummy sleeping. As long as she’s not sliding down and getting stuck at the bottom of the crib.
Most of us thicken to help with keeping food down, or to help with gagging during feedings. Myles used to gag terribly on straight liquid feedings but he did much better with thickened feeds. It didn’t help him keep any of it down though.
If yo stick around here for a while you’ll find that what works for one baby may not work for another.
I think some people us the Enfamil AR instead of thickening with rice or oatmeal because that’s what their docs prescribed, and it’s certainly a lot easier. Also I think the formula contains rice starch, which may effect babies differently than actual rice cereal.
Do you think she’s in any pain? If so I’d try to find another doctor to get her on a higher dose or a different PPI. Prilosec is a compound and it’s often not prepared properly by the pharmacist and then it loses it’s effectiveness.
I know it’s crazy….I was so overwhelmed when I first found this site. I didn’t know what to do with my poor son, but I did get it all worked out with time and I know you will too. We’ll help you in any way we can.

InactiveWe elevated Ben’s mattress, and he sleeps on his belly too. Well, now he rolls all over the place. But if you don’t want to spring for one of the more expensive devices, we would just roll up a towel and tape it directly onto his mattress under the sheet. We would form it in a wide U shape to help keep him positioned correctly without sliding down the bed.
This worked until he started moving more and I didn’t feel comfortable with it anymore (he started turning sideways and putting his face into it!
). Not sure how active your little one is, but it might help????Bensmama2007-5-8 14:36:14
