Worse on Zegerid!

Well…after convincing Hayden’s ped to prescribe Zegerid and using it for a week now it is not working! Today has been horrible….he has projectiled majorly 4x already this morning. It has been so bad I thought maybe he was sick so I called the peds office and the nurse (who is WONDERFUL) said she thinks it is reflux related and wants me to come in for a weight check tomorrow and to change him back to prilosec. I told her that I have noticed that Hayden isn’t doing as well on Zegerid. My calm, non-crying baby has been crying during and after meals and pulling off the bottle. I feel so bad for him! I HATE reflux..I swear I just wish there was one answer for it, not all this guessing whether or not medicines work, stay potent, correct dosages, UGH!!!! mommyto22006-10-19 12:19:51

I’m so sorry Jennifer. I’ve also had many ups and downs with medications. Unfortunately all kids are different, so it’s trial and error. Is it possible that he has something else going on today, like a virus, a new situation, new food, etc? Are you preparing it properly? I’m not much help as I have no experience with this med. All I can say is hang in there. (((HUGS)))

Well…I just got off the phone with the pharmacist and he really seems to know his stuff about prilosec, they have been compounding medications for over 30 years! He basicallly told me all the information that is on this website about how to compound the medicines correctly. So….I guess we are going to ask the ped to put Hayden back on prilosec tomorrow. He was doing well on it, I just switched because I thought maybe it wouldn’t stay stable as long as Zegerid.

is it possible you arent mixing it correctly? or the dose is too low? because zegerid is prilosec only with a buffer..which makes it an immediate release suspension.

I was mixing 6.5ml of water with the 20mg packets like Marci-kids recommends and the dose was what the marci-kids dosage calculator recommends for Hayden’s weight and age. It doesn’t make since why it isn’t working, but it isn’t…so I guess we will try Prilosec again and see what happens. Nothing in my life is easy, so this doesn’t surprise me, lol!

Hi Jennifer. I just had a few comments. Emma has been on Zegerid for a year now so of course I am going to say what a wonderful drug this is. However I totally understand that every baby is different and it might not work for others. My first question, what med was he on before Zegerid? I am just thinking a week might not be long enough to be certain it isn’t working, sometimes and others have noticed this, it can take 2 weeks to kick in, especially a PPI.

Also PPI’s are not to control or help vomiting, only to stop acid production so this is where my second questions arises, are you breastfeeding? Or what formula is he on?

If he is digesting milk or soy proteins and he is allergic &/or intolerant to them that can cause vomiting and stomach discomfort. He might not have showed discomfort and the proteins are now building up in his system causing these problems. I just want to make sure Zegerid is the problem before you take him off of it.

Hi Brandy! Hayden was on Prilosec suspension before he was switched to Zegerid. He is on Nutramigen….Kayla had a milk allergy and Hayden has been tested to see if it showed up, but it didn’t and the allergist said to be safe to just leave him on Nutramigen…he did projectile on milk and soy formulas and has occasionally on Nutramigen, but nothing like today has been. Poor baby, he has only eaten 1 1/2 ounces that has stayed down since 7am this morning! I gave him prilosec that I had left over at around 11 and he held the 1 1/2 ounces he drank after that down. He hasn’t eaten since, he fell asleep at 12:30 and it is 3:15 here and he is still asleep. He usually drinks 4.5ozs at a time, but since midnight hasn’t taken over 2-3ozs at a time. I hope everything gets better soon!

just a thought:
Trace was on every formula and then alimentum when we suspected a milk protein intolerance. he did fine for about 3 weeks until the milk proteins built up in his system. then all of a sudden he was screaming during feeds again and refluxing like crazy even though he was on a high dose of zegerid.. nutrimagen and alimentum actually do have milk in them(they are just very broken down proteins) and many babies cant tolerate this.
i switched him to neocate and in about a day i had a completely different baby.

perhaps it’s an intolerance, rather than an allergy? from my welcome/intro (“groupie Intro’ – it’s the first post stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum)

there’s a MSPI link and, from there, aside from having a lot of info to help you, if you go to page 2, you’ll read all about the differences b/y allergy vs protein…

also, i do believe 1 month old is rather young for conclusive allergy testing? please someone correct me if I’m wrong– I know if there’s been an endoscopy that allergies can show up via the presence of eos cells…

yes allergy testing is very innacurate under age 2. many of these babies also have intolerances rather than alleriges.

Laura~you are correct, the allergist did the testing to see if it showed up, there was only a 50% chance it would show up, but if it did then we would know that was the problem. He said that he may still have an allergy to milk.

Nataliachick~ I am wondering if that is what happened as well, I may try neocate if he doesn’t get better over the weekend.

He just majorly projectiled, I mean TONS for the 5th time today. He did it 3.5ozs at 3:50 and it is 4:50 here and he just did this! I don’t know what to do to help him, he isn’t holding anything down! HELP..any suggestions to help him immediately?

UM! It seems more like a virus, bug. Ya never know with these little ones. My daughter has a cold now and it sucks, she is so much more irritable when she is sick. I hope he isn’t but is sounds like it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Prilosec, if that’s what works great. It just sounds like something else is going on and yes the zegerid does stay stable longer. The vomiting just seems like it could either be an illness or the Nutramigen building up in his system. Unfortunately at his age, allergies are so hard to determine and changing their diets is the only defense we have. As you doc said anything about Neocate, it might be worth trying? I hope everything does get better for you, let us know how the visit goes.

We all posted at the same time. If he isn’t keeping anything down, first give him very small amounts at a time, like every 30 minutes, you have to keep him hydrated. At that age dehydration will come on very fast. Make sure to give him something with electrolytes like Pedialyte.
