My daughter just turned 3 months old and was diagnosed with mild reflux after a barium swallow at 6 weeks. Since then she has been on Nutramigen and Zantac with good results. However, the past 2 weeks she has been spitting up frequently after feeding, and sometimes a few hours after feeding. she cries and arches while being burped, has developed a cough and her chronically stuffy nose has become worse. Anyone have any ideas? She has also had a noisy sounding (stuffy) nose since a few days old, but it is getting worse, and a stridor sound sometimes while feeding or right before she burps. Anyone have any suggestions?
Hello, I would suggest trying to get your daughter a PPI medicine like Prevacid. My son was on Zantac initially too, and did okay for awhile, but eventually it got bad again and we switched to Prevacid. It did wonders. The Prevacid reduces the acid, so when they do spit up, it doesn’t hurt their esophagus. Well, good luck! I hope you can find something that helps!
The stuffiness, crying and arching are definitely signs the reflux is not under control. As the above ladies mentioned, you may want to consider getting her on a PPI like Prevacid, Prilosec or Zegerid. There are a lot of great posts about each medication on this site – you can do a search and have fun researching!! .
Yes, I agree with everyone else. Zantac did nothing for my daughter as
she quickly outgrew her dose and then plateaued on it and got no
relief. My son did great on Prevacid. You can read more about these
meds at http://www.marci-kids.com The meds do not stop the spitting
up/throwing up (they just have to outgrow that) but they stop the acid
and pain.
