I would somehow try THREE doses of 7.5mgs and see what happens. Then, if it totally gives you a new baby just FAX the dr. with the FACTS and make it SHORT.

Becasuse hindsight is 20/20, I would ALSO throw in some pepcid ac:

dissolve 1/2 chewable tab in some water and give it at night (night is the worst, right?), 4hrs seperate from the last dose of the prevacid.

Now you are thinking: who IS she to tell me to medicate my baby like this?!

I am NO ONE!!! I CANNOT tell you what to do. However, MY baby was on BOTH zantac and prevacid at one point or another. Pepcid is the ‘same’ as zantac, so that knowing this I know it is safe…you might just want to fax the dr and TELL that you need some zantac, too, for breakthrough acid. either way I would dose that baby to the hilt, lol!

I would then calculate zantac or pepcid for HIGHEST dose for weight…

okay Laura, HELP!!!! So last night I took out the crib variable. I put him down in his upright little reclining chair and he did just as horrible. So now I no it is not the crib. He has been worse since I started the diet and him on prevacid solutabs. So, I gave up the diet 2 nights ago, and no difference. So, do I assume maybe it is the prevacid solutabs?

I am thinking of just stopping them today. Tough to give them on an empty stomach when I nursed him so much last night.

I am going to treat him myself, I guess. The np at the children’s hospital started him on such a low dose (7.5 mg 1x/day), and when I called and told her how much worse his nights are she just said it can’t be due to acid reflux. The ped is nice, but doesn’t really know what else to do.

So, I am going to go to the organic health store this am and to walgreens. I will start him on pepcid ac otc today. I have never had much success with mylanta, so I don’t know if I will do that.

Please tell me what else to do.

Does anyone know of a good ped gi in souteast Wisconsin?

(ok here it is (from page 1) I would contact them directly and see if they have connections at the Milwaukee Children’s Hospital acid reflux clinic…here is dr philips’ contact info:

I would NOT discontinue the solutabs! like your diet, & like everything else, it needs to be in their systems to work. if you give them up and then decide to try nexium or zegerid or prevacid in caracream/bufferbabies (that’s MY vote!) then your baby will suffer through ANOTHER 2 weeks of getting the meds into his system. that is MY opinion. (you asked? lol).

so again, contact marci-kids and order caracream/bufferbabies and ask them if they can recommend a ped GI for you. AND if you ped is reasonable, and it sounds like s/he is, then I would get marci-kids (dr philips!) to contact HER. let THEM work out the meds! Dr. philips is AMAZING and will do this! he has for many on this board!

in the meantime, see what happens w/ 3 doses of 7.5mgs? your call, of course!

who is this NP to tell you it cannot be acid reflux?!!! ok let’s look at it logically:

dose too low

baby miserable

nothing to distract baby from pain, like in the day

as for the organic health food store: sure, go for it! but if baby’s reflux is as bad as it sounds, all the dietary changes in the world won’t give immediate relief at this point…

how much does baby weigh? I can help you figure out pepcid dose. yes I said 1/2 a tab, but that was WITH the prevacid…anyway give me his weight and we’ll do the calculations.

how can you/nurse np jump to the conclusion it’s not reflux? bcse mylanta didn’t help? mylanta is like using a squirt gun to put out a raging fire!

BELIEVE ME I also went through HELL. one night Jonah shrieked/howled so much non-stop that he actually went hoarse & lost his voice!!! can you imagine how sad & pathetic that would sound??? it was because he wasn’t medicated properly…

Thanks Laura – I already left a message for Dr. Phillips. Hopefully he will be able to help. Okay, I won’t stop the solutabs – I just keep thinking about another new poster on her who said her son actually did worse on solutabs. Makes me wonder if that is my little guy. Also, how long does a baby have to go without eating to have any empty tummy?

So, I ‘ll give him 15 mg this am, and then maybe another 7.5 mg this pm (oops- that darn husband gave him extra – lol)

I left another message for the np – she seems nice, but when the pharmasict explained how low the dose was, I questioned what they are doing there – she has to do what the docs are telling her are their guidelines. So, I don’t know if she’ll be able to help anymore or not.

well… it *might* be the solutabs, but it seems as though you are “damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” kwim (know what I mean)?

you could call marci-kids again and ask to speak to someone about:

1) who they might recommend near you and also about

2) ordering caracream/bufferbabies?

3) give them your ped’s number (seems like this might be the way to go at the moment?)/fax number.

4) ask about what is considered an empty stomach? (the answer to that is here somewhere, but since you’re calling anyway)

also, I would FAX your ped with your concerns? this way it’s in writing…

[ie: higher dose & switch to prevacid capsules. capsules can be used one of two ways: by feeding on empty stomach w/ some applesauce & following w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later OR use w/ caracream/bufferbabies- but either way, it’s the CAPSULES you’re requesting, NOT the caracream- you do not need an rx for the caracream, it’s ‘just’ a stable way of delivering the meds w/o having to time around meals)

Laura – Help, I got the caracream in the mail today. I do I do this? So, I understand to first put the capsules in the Therasol, but how many capsules? Then we pour that solution (with the capsules in it) into the caracream. Then how do we know how much to take out in the syringe?

Right now, Bo is on 7.5 mg 2x/day. What is that in mL?

Please let me know, I am sooooo sleep deprived between Bo and bad weather lately, I can’t figure this out.

-he gets 22.5mg/day (so uses 1.5 capsules/day)

I have nothing but good things to say. I LOVE it! It’s so much easier than all the other ways we tried (compounded, solutabs & capsules w/ applesaucs) & the fact that it doesn’t have to be timed around feedings is icing on the cake! Evan takes it ok (taste-wise), but it is a lot to give him (5mL) so it takes some patience since it takes a while… we only give him tiny squirts @ a time (< .5mL) b/c we are scared to death of him spitting it out & “losing” the med!

We give 5mL for the 15mg dose & 2.5mL for the 7.5mg dose. We do 7.5mg in a.m. & 15mg in the p.m. (we used to do 7.5mg 3x/day but it got easier to just do 2 doses w/ a big one @ night… we actually bumped up to 15mg & 15mg today after our ped appt). I don’t know why our mL are diff’t. How many capsules do you add? We add 16 so it makes a 3mg/mL suspension.

Thanks Laura, I was able to get a hold of Dr Phillips. What a great guy, he kept emailing back and forth until he was able to tell me the dosing. I have to add 14 capsules to the ex jr mix and give Bo 5 ml 2x/day. Bo is on 7.5 mg 2x/day. For whatever reason we didn’t get the instructions – I know David was nice enough to quick package up the mixes for me even though I caught him late in the day.

I hope this works. I love that we can just give it to Bo and not worry about meal times, etc. He loved it this morning, no problems.

Just an update, Bo’s nights are actually a better. He was switched from prevacid solutabs to capsules earlier in the week, and the dose was doubled. Now we are on to the caracream. He hasn’t done the crying out in pain and arching his back anymore. He still wakes a lot though, so we will see.
