InactiveDoes anyone know how to calculate the appropriate dosage of zantac in ml for a 16 pound infant? I went to the link in the groupie intro but I wasn’t sure what calculation to use in order to get the ml (math is definitely not my strength!) Austin was on the lowest dose of prevacid and the doctor refused to increase the dosage, so we are back on zantac again. That was the only PPI the doc was willing to try and it really did nothing at such a low dose. The zantac has helped more than that, so at this point, it’s better than nothing at all. He is currently taking 1.5ml, which worked so well for the last two weeks and now the last two days, I am seeing the same old issues pop back up again. I am not sure if that is the max dosage for his weight. I feel like I call the doctor every week and I will call before I increase but it would be nice to know if the doc is giving me the max dose like he says he is. I get so sad because it is so wonderful to see all his smiles and hear his laughter when he is feeling good. Now we are getting back to the decrease in ounces and squirming/crying during his feedings. I appreciate the input.

InactiveForgot to add that he takes the 1.5 dose 3 x per day, for a total of 4.5ml per day.

Keymasterok, the math is after my little explanation, LOL! I’m going to calculate for you at 5mgs per kilo and also at 10mgs per kilo…
(don’t just take my word for it, ask your pharmacist to consult her/his handy little electronic device called an ipharmacist, which is updated regularly with all the current dosing. this is what it should say for oral pediatric dosing of zantac:Duodenal and gastric ulcer: children 1 month to 16 years: 2-4 mg/kg/day divided twice daily to a maximum dose of 300 mg/day
GERD and erosive esophagitis: children 1 month to 16 years: 5-10 mg/kg/day divided twice daily. GERD max dosage: 300 mg/day. erosive esophagitis max dosage: 600 mg/day)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ok 16lbs divided by 2.2 gives you weight in kilos, so it’s 7.3 kilos7.3 x 5 = 36.5mgs per day, total of zantac for the daythe liquid is 15mgs/ml, so 36.5 divided by 15 gives you the total amount of mls for the day, which is:2.4mls a day, total of zantac – this is the calculation at the ‘low’ end of 5mgs per kiloNOW: onto 10mgs per kilo- the ‘maximum’ dose:7.3 x 10 = 73mgs per day, total, of zantacthe liquid is 15mgs/ml, so 73 divided by 15 gives you the total amount of mls for the day, which is:4.9 mls a day, total of zantac – this is the calculation at the ‘high’ end of 10mgs per kiloSO: your baby has a little bit of room to increase, but not much…just keep track of every little weight gains so you can increase the dose as zantac is very weight sensitive…I would work on getting the PPI meds/dosing worked out, too…hellbennt 2007-08-25 11:01:26 -
