Zantac making things worse?

So after 3 days on Zantac now Chris doesn’t want any solids and is harder and harder to BF. Last night he was screaming for hours with a ton of gas that came out of nowhere. He’s really fussy straining and really coming up in his throat today. He was better before we started with the Zantac. My daughter has done the same thing when she started the Nexuim last year and we had to take her off. Anything out there that might help?

Zantac can burn as it goes down those tender little throats. If I’m not mistaken, I think we were told to put the Zantac in the bottles of formula – which I realize you cannot do when you nurse. What about pumping and using a bottle for the feeding with the Zantac? For some reason, I’m also thinking we have mixed it with Mylanta… but it’s been so long ago, I cannot remember. Unfortunately, Zantac never really worked for either of my two refluxers. With my first child, that is all we had – that and Reglan *sigh*. With my second son, we had him on Prilosec at 7 weeks old. Thought I was gonna lose my mind with his bout of reflux.

How long was your daughter on Nexium? We were told it takes 10 -14 days for the PPI’s to kick in and beging working.

Unfortunately this kiddo refuses a bottle. Maybe off a spoon? I’ve done that with him before. I just don’t know where this huge gas has come from all of a sudden.

Kelly was on Nexuim for a month until insurance took her off. We ended up running out and it took 2 weeks to figure out what was wrong with the coverage. All of a sudden during that time frame she really picked up in her eating. We got the script refilled and put her back on and within 1 week she was starting to drop off again. She’s 3 nonverbal, autistic with other issues, but we attributed to the Nexuim so it was stopped. I was just wondering if it won’t work for one, since his is worse then her’s I hope something works for him. I can’t take the screaming anymore.

Syringe of zantac & also some mylanta. It’s hard to find, check store brand equivalent like cvs brand, etc. Look @ the ingredients & look for variety w/o aluminum…look for Prevacid 101 link, has all ppi info but also link for zantac dosing hellbennt2011-04-11 18:34:02

We found the Mylanta and it helps him take the meds but he’s getting worse about the food, he’s really fussy and can’t sleep. Poor thing’s been screaming all day. Thankfully we have his 6 mth check up tomorrow so hopefully we can get going somewhere for him.

Have you checked zantac dose? It’s very weight sensitive, how much does he weigh?

He’s 9.3 kilos and on 1.5 ml BID so 45 mgs which puts him right around 5 mgs per kilo. So he’s on a good dose, I think.

Ped upped him to 2 ml BID but wouldn’t put him on Previcid because he just read an article that prevacid and prilosec were just as effective as Zantac and no one would be jumping on the Prevacid bandwagon anymore. I’ve been trying to see if I could find the article but really Chris isn’t doing well today. Tons of crying and screaming and wants to sleep. Seems completely worn out. Very unlike himself. But at least he finally agreed he had Sandifer’s and reflux.

zantac can go up to 10mgs per kilo- don’t just take my word on this, read here:

9.3 x 10 = 93 mgs of zantac a day

bottle says 15mgs per ml so

93 divided by 15 =

6.2 mls of zantac

you have room to increase

I agree we need to get to a GI. Just have been calling and calling around and haven’t found anything sooner then 3 months. He did a little better last night, just saw we have 2 more teeth coming through, so that I’m sure is adding to the fun.

Go ahead and make an appt. with a Ped. GI for the soonest you can get in… then tell them to put you on the cancellation list. Call daily if you must and ask if they’ve had any cancellations. Let them see your desperation and maybe they will work you in sooner! =)

My ped. must have seen the same study. She told me that the h2’s are just as effective as ppi’s. I don’t understand even if study is correct, why not try one if the other doesn’t work? Arrggghhh.

I ordered caracream 2 days ago and going with omep otc. I am going to save myself the aggravation.

I will try to ask my ped about it. i am calling for a gi refferal tomm. and i’ll ask about it. It’s strange b/c she is usually so understanding. Been seeing her for 12 years but that really threw me.

Zantac didn’t work for us. We use Prilosec. Zantac reduces the stomach acid after it forms, Prilosec keeps it from forming.

When I was breastfeeding, my little man was over the top gassy too. I discovered, through no help from the doctor, that he was suffering from lactose overload: http://www.babycareadvice.com/babycare/general_help/article.php?id=18 in addition to the reflux.
