zantac question (Help)

my son was just diagnosed with silent reflux and prescribed zantac 2 days ago and its amazing, hes the baby i always knew he could be. always before he would be happy and sweet for a short time and then he would turn into this fussy screaming baby instantly. it makes me want to cry knowing he was in pain all this time ( hes 15 weeks) and i didnt know, all the peds said he was just a fussy baby when i took him in time after time after time. what im worried about now is that all the posts i read say zantac only works for a little while, im terrified that this is temporary and hes gonna end up back in pain again. has zantac worked for anyone for an extended period of time???

Zantac does work for many people, and their babies go on to be happy and comfortable babies. The thing is, that these people aren’t usually the ones who are on these kinds of sites b/c their kids feel better. Most of us on these sites have needed PPIs for our babes to get relief, but that doesn’t mean that H2 blockers don’t work… it just means that we’re kind of a skewed sample! I’d try to stay positive, and hopefully it will work for your son. If you start to see symptoms resurface, you can ask to have his dose adjusted, and hopefully that will be enough to do the trick. If not, you’re ahead of the game with all the knowledge you’ve gained here, and you can ask for a PPI. Good luck. Hope the zantac works.

I have also heard of many people having good luck with zantac. Just remember a few things. One it is very weight sensitive so as he gains weight you may need to adjust the dosage and two if it stops working there are many other meds that can work. I think if you stay on top of it you shouldn’t have a baby who is in pain. It is nice to hear stories where zantac has worked.

One of my friends had great success with Zantac. Her little one is a day younger than Alana and only even needed Zantac to control her reflux. So hopefully your bub will be OK, but if not, like Lori said, you have the info you need to help your bub before it gets out of hand.

Try to think positive! My nephew is doing great on zantac as well. The good news is that if zantac is not the answer…you’ve already found a great forum to give you help and support while you push for a different medicine! Good luck!!!

Alex has done just fine with zantac. Kaelyn is now back on zantac after being weaned off prevacid and it’s working fairly well for her.

Zantac never worked for our middle son, Jonathan, but at the time we didn’t know of anything else, so we just stuck it out. It DOES work for some though as others have said. I hope it continues to work for your litte one!

thanks everyone for your help. i may have spoke too soon. he was great for 3 days and now seems to be back to crying and fussing.! its furustrating to have seen how it could be. by the way is there any side effects to zantac. he seems too be really sleepy?

if the zantac (or any med) is ‘working’ then sometimes you do see sleep as an effect because the poor baby is finally comfortable enough to sleep…

You are not alone! I had the same experience. First few days on Zantac worked really well then each day got closer and closer to the starting point until it was as if we hadn’t given him any at all. We switched to Prilosec and are waiting to see how it works. (we’re holdiing our breath..) I gave him the Zantac at night even though the Doc said to go off. Until we’re on Prilosec a little while I am afraid to totally go off Zantac. Some have had luck on both so I am willing to try a little while.

it seems to work great for about 6 hours or so ..but then it wears off. the doc said i can only give it every 12 hours, so we have like 5 hours or so of misery. someone had told me to give it on an empty stomach, have you ever heard that? does it make a difference?

I was told by the pharmacist to give on an empty stomach but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Doc said it wouldn’t make a difference. We had same problem. Its effectiveness wore off before our 12 hours was up. Then the doctor said we could give it at 10 hours but even that wasn’t close enough.

Perhaps divide your dose into three and space it out that way? That was the way I gave it prior to a PPI. As long as you don’t go over you max dose in a 24hr period I’m not sure it would matter, but of course I’m not a Dr!
