InactiveThis is a weird questions but has anyone who uses Zantac noticed any side effect like this. Tyler seems to kind of punch himself in the mouth over and over again sometimes. It is hard to tell if this is his signal for hungry all of a sudden or Zantac side effect since I give Zantac 30 minutes before feeding. He does not do it all the time just sometimes and usually around feeding time. It may just be a normal baby thing – it just seemed a little weird. He is teething so maybe that is it. I don’t know – it just seemed strange.

Keymasterthis is not answering your question

does zantac need to be given 30 minutes before a feeding? Funny I should be asking, but to be honest, I don’t think I’ve read this anywhere, nor do I remember this- but I certainly could be wrong and we could have done things the wrong way with jonah, or, it just could be that it was too long ago for me to remember…I know you’re supposed to give (non compounded) PPIs 30 minutes before a meal…

InactiveYou don’t have to. I have found it to work well for Tyler however when his dosing is right. I decided to try splitting his daily dosage of Zantac into 4 dosages 30 minutes before his worst reflux feedings. And for Tyler at least it really did work well. I called pediatrician and GlaxoSmithKline to make sure it was OK and they both said that it was fine as long as the dosing was at least 3 hours apart.
The reason I came up with this idea is because I take Zantac as well and on the package it says to take 30 minutes before eating in order to prevent heartburn, so I figured if it works for the adult tablets why not the syrup. I also did some research on the GSK website and it seems that Zantac is not very effective at reducing food induced acid so it seems if you give on full stomach it may be less effective. In addition, if I gave it to him to soon after a feeding he may spit up and I was concerned that he was spitting up the medicine also. So this seemed to work best all around for us at least.

InactiveWe were told to give it 30 minutes before feeding as well. It’s been a while, but I seem to remember Kaelyn going through a phase where she hit herself in the mouth a bunch. If it doesn’t seem to be accompanied by pain or distress, then I wouldn’t worry about it.

InactiveMy daughter, Ellie, (4 1/2 months) started the same kind of thing a few weeks ago. First of all, I thought- She’s found her hands. She was sucking fingers, etc…. Now and for the last couple of weeks, she tries to crame her entire fist in her mouth and gets very aggitated. Shortly after that she almost always spits up or throws up. I’m convinced the fists going aggressively in the mouth is her reaction to pain, nausea, something uncomfortable. Usually, after the spit up she will stop. She’s on zantac as well. At one time, I thought that she may be teething as well, but the spit up with the fists started being so predictable. I haven’t really noticed a correlation with zantac doses and the episodes, but I’ll definitely watch out for it.

Tyler also put his whole fist in his mouth as well and it was also at about 4 months. Sometimes he would put it in so far that he gagged himself. This can be a sign of pain from the burning in the esophogus but it can also be a normal baby thing according to my pediatrician and it does correlate with when Tyler was in love with his hands. He has stopped doing that now so I think for him at least it was a normal phase. He still does and always has put his fingers in his mouth when he is refluxing – but he does not do his whole fist anymore.
Actually the motion that I am talking that he is doing now is not putting it in his mouth. He is punching at his mouth while it is closed. I have come to think that it is not Zantac related however because we have upped his Zantac dose and he actually seems to be doing it a bit less so I do not think it was Zantac related.

InactiveIts so hard to figure these little ones out. It may just be a “normal” baby thing. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your son’t zantac dose? his weight?
Thanks,
Susan
