InactiveHi:
This is my first post but I just want to say what a huge help this board has been to me and my family.
Our daughter (now 10 weeks) was diagnosed by upper GI with moderate to severe reflux at 2 weeks old. We knew what symptoms to look for because our other daughter (now 4) had the same symptoms (back and neck arching, gurgling in her throat, screaming day and night) but wasn’t diagnosed until she was 6 weeks old. Both were silent refluxers – rarely if ever spit up. Our doctor of course tried changing formulas before he would order the upper GI but I think he remembered how persistant I was with our first daughter so when I told him I didn’t want to mess around this time, he actually listened. After the diagnosis, he tried her on Pepcid (which actually worked for our first daughter). Well, no such luck with Abby. Got worse if anything so he started her on Prevacid Solutabs 1/4 tab 1x/day. Still no improvement so I began researching and found this message board and emailed the folks at marcikids. Almost immediately, I had a response from Dr. Phillips and he proceded to email back and forth with me providing suggestions on how Zegerid could help Abby. I got all of my info together and headed off to the doctors office. He basically said, “oh, it’s just omeprazol so I guess we can try it”. That is when I informed him of the difference between Zegerid and Prilosec. I think I educated him that day. He didn’t agree to the dosage that Dr. Phillips recommended but after trying to convince him why the dose was appropriate, he finally said it was our decision on how much to give. Joel even gave me a call at home to give me advice on how to convince our doctor – THANKS JOEL!!
We also had an appointment with a pediatric gastroenterologist a couple of weeks ago. He did agree with the dosage but I also had to educate him about the difference with Zegerid – I am so happy there are people that help us understand these things so we can go to our doctor’s offices loaded with an abundance of information. I referred to Marci-kids in Missouri during our conversation and later in the appointment, he referred to it as “the Missouri Acid reflux capitol of the world, blah, blah, blah” HOW UNPROFESSIONAL – I almost hit him but my husband held me back. I have no respect for him and will not go back. He wouldn’t even listen to us – just talked, talked, talked.
After a few days of using the Zegerid, we began to notice results. Now, almost 5 weeks after starting it, Abby is a happy baby, LOVING her Zegerid, and doing great. I followed up with Dr. Phillips and he gave me recommendations on when to increase the dose if needed and I truly appreciate all these wonderful people at Marci-kids are doing to help the babies and kids with reflux and their famililes.
The Zegerid does have a minty taste and is expensive – fortunately our insurance does help cover most of the cost.
It is so good to have a forum like this to share experiences and just see what has worked and not worked for others. You don’t feel so alone when you have contact with others in your situation. I pray that each of you can find solutions for your little ones as we have found for Abby.
