zegerid not working?

We are on day 5 on Zegerid, and my DS’s symptoms are still not better. He’s truly suffering. Can someone please tell me if it should be working by now? I’m at a loss and I feel so sad.

I should add, his reflux symptoms seem WORSE right after dosing, then he seems to improve after about 6-8 hours…it doesn’t make sense!

are you giving another med, too? otherwise, it’s as if he’s not on any meds at all. If you’re giving zantac (or pepcid or axid or tagament), it needs to be spaced 4 hrs from the zegerid…

No, no other meds, I was told not too. How long should we be on two meds? Do his symptoms sound normal after dosing to be so symptomatic?

unfortunately no one seems to tell you these things– I learned the hard way- until the PPI started working (day 12), my son lost his voice(!!!)…

so I quickly figured out/learned he could have zantac, too.

have you read Prevacid 101?

how are things?

you can give the zantac 4 hrs before or after- either way- just not at the same time as the zegerid.

have you checked the dose? there’s a link to a dosing chart from Prevacid 101(link given in post above)…

how are baby’s poops? are you breastfeeding or using formula? if formula, which one?

Henry has been screaming bloody murder! I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to work, with my last two kids it worked within 3 days ;(

We breastfeed, and I’ve started supplementing Axid, 1.8mg 2 times a day. He’s 12 pounds 10 ounces today. The Axid is helping his reflux, but unfortunately it gives him runny poop. His diaper rash had completely cleared up after quiting the Axid and starting the Zegerid, and I can see it’s starting to get red again ;(

Day 12 huh? Any ideas why? I’ve been giving Henry 12mg of Zegerid 2 times a day instead of 8mg 3 times a day, is that okay? It’s still 24mg a day. Is the dosage right for his weight? Converting pounds to kilos is so frustrating.

day 12 because it can take up to 14 days- you can read the ‘stickied’ posts in the Medicine Forum- takes a bit to turn off some of the proton inhibitor pumps…

two times a day should be fine- you can also try 3 times a day- your PPI dose looks good…are you using the zegerid rx 40mg packets? or doing it yourself w/ otc?

Axid dosing, from link above:

Children <12 years: 10mg/kg/day divided into two daily doses.

5.7 kilos x 10 = 57mgs a day, divided into two daily doses

your bottle of liquid should tell you mg/ml, so you know how many mgs per ml

1.5mgs per kilo 3 times a day

5.7 kilos x 1.5 = 8.55mgs of prilosec is one dose

Thank you for all of the info. I’m dosing with the 40mg packets, mixing to 10 ml and adding 10ml of a crushed up tums with water until my calcium carbonate comes in the mail (tomorrow). He is currently doing so well 8 hours AFTER his dose, but for 6-8 hours after his dose, his reflux is SO BAD. Is it the sodium bicarbonate increasing his acid production? Since the Zegerid isn’t shutting off the proton pumps yet, I guess it stands to reason…. I feel like such a mad scientist mixing his meds and crushing tums and trying different combinations of drugs trying to get Henry comfortable. It’s maddening when his symptoms are so unpredictable.

I just keep praying the Zegerid kicks in, and every time he starts to fall asleep I find myself praying, please let this be the time he doesn’t cry/scream from the reflux.
