Zegerid syringe ???

Sorry to jump in so late!! Things have been crazy with work.

We used the 40mg packets w/mylanta for a couple of months and decided to try the 20mg packets becuase Evan’s stools became very loose as a result of the Mylanta. (he is also on Alimentum, which does not help.)

After a short ajustment period, the 20mg’s have worked just as well at controlling his symptoms. We too, add the Zegerid to 1 or 2oz of formula at dosing time. Evan has done fine taking it, he didn’t seem to notice when we stopped buffering with the Mylanta.

we did the 40 mg packs also. Trace was on 10 mg 3 times and then eventually 14 mg 3 times a day. i adjusted it when i saw break through reflux.

we used Tums instead of the mylanta. dr phillips suggested it. with the 40 mg packs you have to use either the mylanta or Tums dissolvables. this is because the 40 mg packs dont have enough buffer in them, therefore the medication will not work as well. with the 20 mg packs, there is enough buffer, but dr philips says some babies have trouble with the taste.

we now have switched to Prevacid/caracream bc of insurance. he is on 27 mgs and doing great!

I called the insurance today to find out how much the Zegerid would cost and they said that it is considered a step therapy so she would have to have tried both Prevacid and Protonix before they would pay for Zegerid. The doctor has to call in to get it approved. I’m not going to put her on the Protonix since I’m sure it also has to be given on an empty stomach. That defeats the purpose of switching. She said it might make a difference since she is an infant but she wasn’t sure. Why is everything such a circus??? I am probably just going to wait till her Oct. appt with the GI and talk to her about it. I hate insurance companies!!!
