InactiveKendra was switched to Zegerid as i suspect she might be reacting to the lactose and aspartame in the prevacid.
I went over the insert and it says to take 1 hour before a meal????
i know zegerid is inmediate release, so why would they recommend 1 hour before a meal?Could you please share how do you give it to your little ones? she is on the 40 mg package. I prepare it according to the marci kids website and add 10ml of mylanta for extra buffer. Thanks aheadSeptember 20, 2007 at 2:30 pm #42974Anonymous
InactiveHey Leo. As far as the insert goes, that is all information for giving Zegerid to adults. You don’t need to worry about timing it at all. you can give it before food, after food, or even in the food! It’s really nice.
We also use the 40 mg. packets and mix each pack with 6.5 mls of water to end up with 10 mls of medicine (4 mgs./ml). Then I fix each individual dose with that. So, let’s say that Kendra is getting 12 mgs. per dose. That would be 3 mls. of the Zegerid. I put that in a syringe and then pull up 3 mls of Mylanta for a total of 6 mls. of the Zegerid/Mylanta mix. Does that sound right to you???We give it three times a day. Once in the am before breakfast, once in the afternoon before his nap and then at night right before bed.I hope it works out well for you!!Oh, and if she seems to have trouble with the Mylanta (can cause loose stools), you can also use the smooth dissolve Tums. I can give you more info. about this if you are interested.September 20, 2007 at 3:45 pm #42981Anonymous
InactiveThanks Naomi,
she is taking 5ml (10mg) twice a day before a meal plus zantac once a day.I mix it well in 6.5 ml of water then add 10ml of Mylanta. save the serynge in the fridge and just give her dose from it ( put it in the feeding tube) follow by a meal.We haven’t have any problems with the Mylanta yet. I have read that the tums are not good for MPFI kids because it has wheat, am i right? Thanks for the tip, though.September 20, 2007 at 5:39 pm #42989Anonymous
InactiveOk, I’m not sure I’m understanding you, but if you are mixing the 40 mg. packs with 6.5 mls of water, then you get 4 mgs. per each ml of mixture. If that’s the case, then the 5 mls. you are giving her per dose actually has 20 mgs. of Zegerid. But maybe you are figuring this after you have already added in the Mylanta???
If so, I’m not sure for how long the Mylanta/Zegerid mixture is stable. I always just add the Mylanta right before I give it to him.As for the Tums.. yes, some of them have wheat, but the Tropical Fruit flavor does not.

InactiveNaomi,
i get a total of 20ml after i add the Mylanta. The concentration is then 2mg/1ml. For marci kids instructions this is good for 28 days. i could have misread the instrutions. maybe iam supposed to do it like we do it in regards the mylanta??here is the linkSeptember 20, 2007 at 6:35 pm #42992Anonymous
InactiveOk, I get it now. I hadn’t realized that they updated the Marci Kids info. I think either way would work.

InactiveNaomi pretty much covered the zegerid basics! I just wanted to let you know that we also have used it (the 20mg packets though) so feel free to PM me anytime you have other questions! Good luck with it!!!

InactiveLeo,
I just wanted to add my two cents and say Zegerid has worked wonders for us…you probably know that already.
My G.I said that you don’t have to time with meals at all but it does have best results when given on an empty stomach…take it or leave it. You know these docs, they’re wrong a lot when it comes to GERD!!! Anyway, I hope Kendra does great on it. We use the 40mg packets too and I mix two packets at a time, enough for two days or so and put it into little syringes for each dose so I don’t have to do that three times a day. I’ll tell ya, if I knew about Zegerid in the beginning, we would have saved our sweet baby a lot of pain!! Don’t you just hate how hind-sight is 20/20!ugh!September 21, 2007 at 1:07 pm #43040Anonymous
InactiveThe reason it says give it an hour before a meal is because the instructions are for the prilosec that is in Zegerid. I wish they would update the info so that it says no need to wait. I confirmed with Dr. Phillips that I didn’t need to wait.kattmc32007-09-21 13:09:29

InactiveWe started zegerid last Thursday and I don’t really think we are seeing results yet. How soon can we expect them? We are still giving the zantac also until the zegerid kicks in. Any advice on how to console her at night when she is in pain and wakes up out of sleep?

InactiveHi there,
it will take around two weeks. I would continue with the Zantac and maybe you can try Mylanta Cherry Supreme (read the ingredient to make sure it does not have aluminun hydroxide in it) before a bottle in between Zantac doses. Maybe 1-2ml.HugsLeoSeptember 23, 2007 at 4:59 pm #43150Anonymous
InactiveThanks, that is helpful. Also, do you know if it is ok to mix the mylanta with the zegerid when you are mixing it with the water or does it need to be done right before I give it to her? Right now we are storing the water, zegerid and mylanta mixture in the refrigerator.

InactiveHey there,
we mix everything together and put on the fridge. The marci-kids instructions kind gave me the impression that this was ok to do, but if somebody can clarify this, it would be very helpful. -
