InactiveI posted this in another but it gives background to question
After reading a few posts where people have had more luck with their GP< I decided to go to my husbands GP today- who he loves- and talk about medications and dosages. Although he wasn’t in total agreeance with some of my comments re dosage, he was prepared to increase her Zantac (and prescribe it as a effervescent so it doesn’t have the alcohol the syrup does). My pead said although the dose could be increased she wouldn’t do it and ALana could just grow out of it!!!!

Instead of losec which is a bugger to give because it is not meant to really be disolved, GP prescribed an increased dosage of Zoton (Lansoprazole)– which comes in a sachet and can be dissolved as well. Given she was doing OK on Zantac alone (not perfect but bearable) I was pretty happy with that. Bugger the pead now, I will just go through him (GP), he will consider upping the dose if I try for two weeks with no luck. At least he was open minded about it all.
He also said he would consider allergy testing if I wanted- after the pead told me there were not tests- anyone getting the idea she was just brushing me of. Anyway I canceled my next appt with her!
Has anyone else used Zoton- what is Lansoprazole in US?

InactiveOh, I was just googling Zoton and apparently it is strawberry flavoured- might take some myself!! HAven’t got it yet because the pharmacy don’t stock it and have to get it trucked in. Won’t be until later this week because it is Melbourne Cup and a Public Holiday in Melb- can you believe we get a public holiday for a horse race!

Inactivethat would be Prevacid here.
allergy testing is not really reliable under age 2.
my son is milk/soy protein intolerant and that wouldnt show up on allergy tests anyway.
i figured it out myself by trial and error.
good luck

Inactivewhen you give the prevacid, make sure you do it 30 min before a meal on an empty stomach, and this is why:

Inactivehe has only prescribed max of 15 mg but they come in 30 mg sachets, and you have to chuck out the rest, so….you never know, maybe a little extra might slip through?

I think we will stick with the pepti-junior for now, the pead would prescribe neocate if pushed, but If I change both I won’t know which one made a difference!

Keymasterfrom the Medicines Forum, there is a stickied post (post at the top) called ‘Treating GERD w/ PPIs’
from there, scroll down to the purple post(
) and read ‘Prevacid 101’you will see information about PPIs, including how to administer the packets and when, etc

InactiveHi Therese,
I’m so glad you were able to have such good luck with the GP!!
Good luck with the Zoton. This medicine (Prevacid here) really made a difference with my son.Keep us posted on how it works (once you get it
).November 6, 2006 at 1:43 pm #17289Anonymous
Inactiveprevacid is the only ppi my son has ever been on and it’s worked wonderfully!!! LOL about the horse race I think that’s cool!!! we tried the packets (same as the sachets I assume) and it did taste like strawberry with a bit of a kick, but aidan loved it-he was just too little to take them ( 2 months old) so we switched to the disolvable tablets.

InactiveHi Therese
Glad you got somewhere with the GP. Zoton is not approved for use with children in Australia so you are lucky to get it prescribed. I would give it a couple of weeks and if you dont see the improvement that you are looking for then I would definately push for the Neocate. Also think about seeing a ped GI specialist.
Your ped is right, there are no specific tests done in Australia for MSPI but general allergy testing is usually done at 6 months to rule out any severe allergies. The testing can be inaccurate so follow ups need to be done. We had allergy testing done at 9 months and all came up negative even though we know Tyler is allergic to milk and soy.

InactiveI kind of figured that re Zoton, although I thought I read another Aussie mum write about it on this website. Someone from WA? The GP even rang the PBS re it because he thought it was restricted, but apparently it wasn’t restricted anymore or something so he was able to prescribe it without an authority.
Given it is just Prevacaid in US I suppose there is no real risk even though it isn’t approved? She is currently still on the losec (we restarted it after a couple of days as she went down hill). I give her 10mg x 2 instead of the 5 x 2 prescribed- this is because she spits a lot of it out (I tried it, it is disgusting!) and then I know she gets the 5mg. She is also on her Zantac. On this combo she does really well. Today she has been a mothers dream!
So the only benefit of the Zoton is if it is more palatable and if it means I can reduce or stop the zantac. We did the effervesent tablets today and she drank them like a charm!
We are going to give it two weeks and see how we go. I am feeling positive!!

InactiveOh no, I didnt mean that there was any risk in using it, it is the main drug used in the US so I wouldnt worry about any useless Aussie restrictions. I tried to get it from a couple of doctors for my son but none would prescribe it. I have seen a couple of other Aussie mums using it too but I think it just is alot less common than Losec. We did the combo for a week and then was able to cut out the Zantac so maybe you will be able to do the same.
Keep positive, things really do improve over time, especially once you get the whole meds/formula combination sorted out.

InactiveMy GP mentioned he had prescribed it a few times- must be progressive- and an ex Tasmania- Go figure!!!!!
Can’t wait to give it a try- just syringed that useless losec down and it was awfullllllllllll!
Thanks for all your info- its been a great help.
