InactivePoor little Matthew had been eating so well this week and he has not put on any weight! But the ped said he is not concerned as babies sometimes gain nothing one week and a ton the following one so not to worry!
We are no longer trying to give Matthew any formula or cereal — he will absolutely NOT take it at all. So we are going to do a fish trial and then also boiling pasta or rice and grinding it with meat, fish, veggies… whatever!
On the G-tube the ped said ABSOLUTELY NOT. He has been thinking about it and talking to other people and it is not the right time and he hopes that we never have to go there.
He spoke to the psychologist at the hopspital who specialises on talking to parents of children who have eating aversions or anorexias (she was on leave and is only back tomorrow). He has told me i need to go see her (I love spain, nobody asks you and he is made an appointment and i am actually pretty happy about it). He said that she has seen a TON of babies with infantile anorexia and she is awesome and will give me great advice. I hope i learn something that i can share here later… i have to call the ped tomorrow cause he cannot remember when the appointment is…but will either be tomorrow or monday!

Thais, I’m glad to hear that Matthew is eating so well! That’s great! I posted a reply to one of your other posts before seeing this one, but was happy to see that you have been able to decrease his meds- I guess that means that the reflux is much better.
I was just wondering why your ped is so against the g-tube for Matthew. Do you know why he thinks that “it’s not the right time and hopes that you don’t have to go there”. Just asking because I’m so afraid that we are heading there with Hailey, and wanted as much info as possible so that I can make a decision.

InactiveLori — ha, i have responded to your posts already somewhere else 🙂
My ped´s reasoning is the following — Matthew does not have any type of disease or anything… he has no physical problems with swallowing (he can take 8 ounces of solids if he wants to), oral aversions (if you give him water, he can take 8 ounces in one go), nothing nothing he can see other than just that he is not hungry or does not understand his hunger cues… he says that therefore, eating can happen any day (yes, he reminded me that Matthew is never going to be fat and without the tube he may continue to be FTT for a while) but he does not want surgery when the NG tube is working great… he takes it off but it is easy to put back on, Matthew has not had any ear or throat infections, which are typical, so he is doing great with this tube… he thinks that the first couple of months with the G tube are just as painful as having to take care of him not pulling the G tube and if he may eat in a couple of months… why go through the hassle.
Don´t know if this explains it — he just thinks that when you know your baby has something long term, like an aversion, or something that prevents him from swallowing, eating etc that will take time to resolve, it is OK to go with G tube but when you don´t know how quickly the baby is going to eat, he prefers teh NG tube (Again, in Matthew´s case, there is no oral aversion to the tube and he has had no infections at all and Matthew seems in extremely good spirits all of the time)

InactiveThais,
I’m so happy to hear that Matthew is eating solids so well for you. It seems like he is really improving, especially since he can take 8 oz at a time! Noah has NEVER had that much at once. Do you give Matthew ground up table food? Does he actually chew the food, or swallow it whole? How long does the Ped think that he will need the NG tube since they arent ready to do a G-tube?
Please keep us updated on your appt with the psychologist. I would love to hear what she has to say.

This week has been amazing and i really hope i do not jinx myself! (i do everytime by the way, so i will let you know).
We have not given him ground up table food yet but we are going to start soon! hopefully he will like something!
Yes, we are going to need the tube for a while i think. Matthew still takes about 7 ounces through the tube at night, with 4 scoops of duocal and no weight gain… between that and the 18 ounces of solids! He is very active… but hopefully no G tube.

InactiveGlad to hear he is in such good spirits and that the doctors remain so
on top of things. Definitely let us know what the pyschologist says.
Hugs to you both.March 7, 2006 at 4:17 pm #3201Anonymous
InactiveAfter my visit with the psychiatrist, I’m very interested in what the psychologist has to say as well! I bet you it’s much more supportive. It’s funny how two professions that are so similar can use such different approaches. I hope they have some help to offer. Being the mother of a non-eater can be so difficult emotionally.

InactiveI really think i jinxed it… everytime that things are going well and i post about it, it all goes to hell…
I posted about his sleep and how he had been sleeping well (9 hours at night) and going down well for his naps… well, the same day it started going downhill until last night, when he cried for 8 hours unconsolably, slept 2.
On his feeding.. he threw up all night because he was not sleeping so we had to stop tube feeding. Then he took some yogurt for breakfast and NOTHING for lunch…
WHAT A ROLLERCOASTER THIS IS!

InactiveOh no Thais – I am so sorry to hear this. Does he have a fever – maybe ear infection?

InactiveOh Thais! I’m so sorry. The ups and downs of this thing can be awful. I hope it passes soon.

InactiveOh no! I’m so sorry he is having a tough time. Hopefully its fleeting and will pass very quickly. Maybe he had a stomach ache or something like that that kept him awake. By any chance did you try any new foods lately?

InactiveWe went to ped yesterday and he was fine…
I swear, there has not been one time when i have posted something positive and it has become much worse right after! I have learned my lesson… only post on bad days

InactiveLisa has a good point – did he eat anything new yesterday? A new food could have caused a colic reaction…
