Clay is 3 months old. He was initially on a regular formula, which gave him terrible gas and tummy pains..he cried literally all day. we then switched him to a senstive (similac)…instantly the gas and pains were gone and for about 2-3 weeks he was perfect. Then he started throwing up, almost every time he would eat-he would throw up. Not projectile though. At his 2 month check up we told the doctor that she said that he most likely had reflux and it was normal and he would grow out of it

Soon after he stopped throwing up! But would play with his bottle when we tried to feed him, turning his head, thrusting his tounge out and would get upset if we presisted. Then last friday he stopped wanting to eat. He would scream and completely freak out if we tried to feed him, sometimes he would take a few sucks and then would scream harder! i went back to the doctor and she (per my request) finally gave us a script for zantac. She prescribed 1ML twice a day but i found here that he could have more, so when it made no difference we upped it to 1.5 MLs…and we started that yesterday. We also just switched to a soy formula. His next bottle will actually be soy (similac insomil). I am PRAYING that between the soy and the zantac and the occasional mylanta i give him that he will start eating like he should…

Here is a list of symptoms i showed the doctor:

· Poor sleeping/abrupt wake ups

· Arches his back when we try to feed him, while we’re feeding him and after we’re done.

· Has frequent hiccups/spits up/throwing up (not as much as before)

· Drooling

· Gags and chokes every time we try to feed him. And gags and chokes when I try to place him on his belly, usually he will vomit after tummy time, whether he just ate or its been hours. (we are still using the slow flow nipples)

· Bursts of crying that happen suddenly.

* As of Friday the 25^th he has started refusing to eat

Does this sound like anyone else’s story? Am i doing all that i can right now?

Does it sound like he has a cows milk allergy?

We are military, so i cannot go to a ped. GI on my own, i have to have my PED refer us to one…so i have to take things step by step….i am just so depressed over this..i want him to be a happy baby…

Sounds like to me that he is pain and you probably need a different medicine more like a PPI such as prevacid, nexium, zegerid. It is early but he may be working on cutting teeth, my ds had his first tooth at 4.5 months and dd already has one at 5.5 months. I don’t know that soy is the answer either, you may want to look at a hypo formula such as nutramigen/alimentum to see if they help, but whatever you do, stay on top of it and get it fixed as soon as you can, feeding aversions are not fun… i haven’t personally dealt with one as my ds was a comfort eater, but stressing over what your lo is getting isn’t fun at all. good luck.

i thought maybe he was starting to teethe as well, hes been having an awful lot of bubbles in his drool…

the formula issue is what is the most stressful..if i could afford it i would buy whatever he needed, but we get our formula from wic..and for anything other than the 3 kinds we’ve tried we need a script from the doctor and the doctor is the one that wants us to try everything else first, to save WIC money…so….i feel so stuck-like i have no choice but to do what she says…

And she is the only ped clsoe to us in the small town we live in.. so… blah…

How long should i give the zantac and Soy combo? When would i see a miracle if i was gona see one?lol

Today Clay has only fought one bottle. He’s still not eating as much, but i can get 4 ozs in him which i am happy with and he seems to be happier since i upped the zantac dose to 1.5 ML, but seems to have tummy pains…im thinking its the switch to soy so i gave him some mylicon…and he hasnt had a BM today so im thinking maybe thats makig him uncomfortable too….

Do most the mama’s on the forum use specialty formulas?

can’t speak for most of the mamas…but can say that soy only worked for a small amount- something like 60% of babies that cannot tolerate milk proteins cannot tolerate soy proteins either, thus the acronym MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance)
don’t quote me on the 60%…

can you just TELL the ped that you DID try everything?
speed the process up?
FAX the ped.
thank the ped.
list/explain what is going on.
keep it short & sweet & factual, no rambling emotions.
TELL/REQUEST (do not ‘ask’)
provide fax info/contact info for who to fax at WIC
thank again
fax ped.
call ped’s office to tell fax was sent.
call office to follow up to make sure THEIR fax was sent

i am sorry i havnt read everyone elses posts (i have 2 babies that are hungry) 😉 . but i wanted to reply fast.

does he have any intolerance symptoms?? as in mucousy poo.. diarhea…excema..etc.. if so i would switch to alimentum formula.

also.. it sounds like he has silent acid reflux.. which is when he IS still spitting up but it only comes up to the throat and goes back down.

def would medicate him in the meantime.. maybe ask for prevacid and check out what the good dosage would be for his weight!!!

i brought the WIC scrit form with me last time, and she flat out told us that here they try everything first before doing script formula…so we are trying to soy…and the zantac… 🙁

a little after we first started the sensitive formula, he did had mucous in his poo every now and then, we told the doc and she said a little was normal and not to worry…he had it maybe 5-8 times…but not lately..

He always sounds like he is spitting up but we dont see anything, like i prepare for it and nothing comes out. but he gets the red eyes, and usually hiccups follow…thats what i told the doctor when i was trying to tell her i thought he had reflux…

i asked about a PPI…and she said that she only prescribes those for the babies that cannot gain weight without them…and since he is still gaining she said that its better to try everything else first.

( see why im so down and frustrated?)

On a good note, clay has been only mildly fighting his bottle lately. He’s had about 6 soy bottles so far and no throw up. But he seems to be having gas/tummy issues?…

Could that be from switching formulas and not another sensitivity?

no .. most likely from the soy.. it can constipate.. look for that.

and is he cranky and acting like he is in pain? if so then that would be a reason to go the PPI as well.. not just poor weight gain.

and the mucous is not normal but if its resolved and there are no other issues i would give soy a bit longer…

my son did well on the soy and zantac, hes 8 months now, still has reflux issues but we max out the does of zantac and it gets better. make sure he is on the max dose for his weight. we were lucky, dominic doesnt have a milk allergy. if you don’t think your little man is getting better after 2 weeks on the soy push the dr for a different formula. they always think that if the baby is gaining weight that there is nothing to worry about but they shouldn’t leave them in pain when there are ways to treat it

The soy caused wicked constipation for my daughter, which made terrible gas, and it didn’t improve her feeding any. Really, she needed a good dose of medication given correctly- namely a PPI! I understand that your doc may not prescribe it, can you use Over the counter prevacid in bufferbabies? Maybe that’s an option. GOod luck.
