InactiveSorry your doc is being so resistant to any of the hypo formulas! I agree with the others that your LO might have a milk allergy and there is a good chance he could be allergic to soy as well. An elemental formula might be the best solution, since they are 100% hypoallergenic. If you are interested I can get you some samples of Neocate to try. I know that sometimes if you can show the doctor that your LO is really improving on the formula they will write a script so WIC will cover it. Just PM me if you are interested. Good luck and hang in there.

InactiveDo you have Kaiser? Did you finally get referred to a GI specialist? If so, how? I’m in the same boat…

and is he cranky and acting like he is in pain? if so then that would be a reason to go the PPI as well.. not just poor weight gain.and the mucous is not normal but if its resolved and there are no other issues i would give soy a bit longer…He was acting like was in pain but he hasnt today, thank goodness…i thought maybe the mucous was a bug, but the doctor wasnt concerned…ugh…July 5, 2010 at 1:22 am #66635Anonymous

thats awesome! im so glad to hear someone else did well on what clay is on, it gives me hope since im praying this will be the ticket to making him a happy baby…hes been on the soy for about 5 days and seems better, but is constipated a little so, im working on that…July 5, 2010 at 1:24 am #66636Anonymous

I’m not sure what that is? 🙁We didnt get a referral though…our ped is resistant, and doesnt want to refer unless she thinks we need to. So i am trying everything else in the book to make Clay better so then if he’s still sick, she will have no choice…I’m sorry you are having problems too…it sucks so bad. … PM me if you ever need to vent or cry-i know it is so so stressful…July 5, 2010 at 1:01 pm #66641Anonymous
Inactivedom didnt have a prob with the constipation. i thought that he did because he didnt poop for a day or so but when i asked the dr he said that that was normal as long as when he did go it wasnt hard pellets. he was in pain but it wasnt the constipation it was that we needed more zantac. i started dom on cereal early, 3 and a half months he was. the dr wasnt happy with me but i figured it might soak up some of the acid. i didnt give rice tho. i did oatmeal. i still very rarely give him rice. its to binding. def give the soy some time. but if your little guy has a milk allergy he prob wont do go on the soy either. dominic had reflux do to an immature stomach muscle and delayed gastric emptying. hang in there and fight for your little guy!

Inactivetry the oatmeal. how much are you giving him? i didnt put it in doms bottle. i gave him a tablespoon mixed kind of runny in the morning before his bottle around 9 or so and then in the evening around the 7 pm bottle. i gave it to him on a spoon and he took it well. are you giving the cereal in a bottle or from the spoon? how much does he weigh?

InactiveBoth Alimentum and Nutramigen are hydrolysate formulas, which means that they still contain milk protein. Even though it is partially broken down, some babies with more severe milk protein allergies can still have a reaction to it. A hypoallergenic formula, like Neocate, is milk-free and the proteins are completely broken down to free amino acids making it easier for babies with allergies to digest. Does that make sense?
Let me know if you have any other questions!

InactiveSo Rachel, if I was to try Neocate but my daughter (10 weeks) still had bad spitting/puking, then would it be safely assumed she simply has an underdeveloped LES? I’m trying to figure things out before we traumatize her with PGI and tests!!!
Thanks

KeymasterI’m not Rachel,
but is your baby on formula already? just asking bcse I wouldn’t want you to quit breastfeeding, thinking formula was the answer, only to find out otherwise…anyway: here is a link to help you sort out about what mspi is (milk soy protein intolerance/allergy) and to learn it’s relationship to reflux:MSPI ‘main page’: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697

InactiveWow, that was all very helpful! First, breastfeeding stopped early on, as she was violently frustrated at the breast from the reflux. She would cry and pull off, etc. We went through extensive steps to fix that, including letdown issues, uphill feeding, even pumping and bottle feeding. She was actually the worst on BM.
With that said, it’s still so confusing to me as to how you figure out what the problem really is (without having to go to a GI, that is ;))! It seems that an outright “allergy” would be accompanied by more severe reactions, including a rash and more severe colic-like symptoms, which we don’t have.
As for whether it is true reflux, protein intolerance, or simply a weak LES, I am still looking for an easy checklist to help figure out how to distinguish what might be the problem. By this I mean for instance: “If your baby has tried breast milk, regular formulas, soy formulas and hydrolized formulas and still has trouble, then ________;” “if she is better on ___________, then _____________.” There probably isn’t such an answer key!
I guess I just want an answer before having to go through all of the formula changes. If it’s purely structural, then I could be on regular old Similac and things would be the same, but not spending a ton on specialized formulas. Or is it that even if it is structural, would elemental formula help that or would anything they drink just come up? KWIM?
I guess the rational would be the same if it’s straight reflux, not cause by any underlying intolerance: if she’d have reflux regardless of what type of formula she’s on, then why go through all of the trials and changes when regular Similac isn’t much different than Alimentum, for instance.
I’m sorry for rambling, but I’m sure you get my point!

Inactivemy son had no food allergies just reflux from LES. the specialized formulas came up worse because they are thinner, i switched him to the similac soy and that stayed down the best. it was a bit thicker. if there is no food allergy she is going to vomit anything she drinks. even on solids the food came up too. but he was happy lol we stopped the zantac at ten months when the vomiting subsided and hes been good ever since. all tho he still spits up once and a while

InactiveAh. So, maybe we should give AR a try first? If it works, then maybe we could assume it’s structural only? We’ve tried oatmeal and it doesn’t help plus, she gets so frustrated because it doesn’t come out as easily–when I try a faster flow or larger nipple, it just comes out too fast and she chokes or eats too fast!!!
What do you think? If she’s the same on AR then maybe we get her over to an elemental and try that. Or should we just try the elemental? I’d hate to make it that much worse if it’s just structural. How did you know?
