InactiveUgh, Lauren. I don’t have advice, but just support! In a way, I hope you get a definitive answer so you can finally get some sleep! The endoscopy is pretty mild, but always hard to send our babies for procedures no matter how hard or easy.
OH! and the picture of you holding Shane and he is smiling, ADORABLE! He is such a cutie!
Hang in there and hope you get answers soon! Is the test scheduled yet?September 5, 2007 at 7:25 am #42177In reply to: tested positive for one part of celiac?

InactiveI don’t have any answers either but I hope you find the information you’re hoping for.
How soon will the doctors be able to tell you more? September 5, 2007 at 6:58 am #42175In reply to: tested positive for one part of celiac?

InactiveThey don’t want you to stop the gluten b/c if he does have celica and you stop gluten his villi could heal and they wouldn’t be able to tell. That is pretty much all that I know until you find a good diagnosis. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

InactiveThis is for all you moms familiar w/celiac…
shanes blood testing came back positive for one out of the five tests for celiac. I dont understand much about this.. but they say they have to do an endoscopy to find out more..can anyone explain this to me?? they are also concerned because he has fallen low on the growth charts.. and does seem to have “malabsorbed” poo.. if you could imagine that. And they told me not to stop gluten until after the endoscopy.sooo.. any info would be greatly appreciated on where i go from here.. is there other ways of telling he has it besides a biopsy?? and should i be nervous that he isnt getting ALL his nutrients?? how malabsorbed is he?! plus.. what other signs are there? .thanks so much…September 3, 2007 at 2:06 pm #42100In reply to: Wheat issues?

Inactiveceliacs can have corn. the only things that celiacs cannot eat are gluten containing grains—–wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut and triticale—and commercial oats because of cross-contamination.
what is going on that you think you might need to avoid gluten?September 3, 2007 at 9:07 am #42095In reply to: Wheat issues?

Inactivemy son is intolerant to wheat/gluten, however it is not celiac.

InactiveMakes sense, thanks!
I guess I will go back to the rice and see how he does. It is midnight as I am writing this and I can hear him on the monitor tossing and turning amd whimpering…Would corn bother a celiac?? I know for sure that corn products bother him. Not trying to jump to conclusions, just curious.Should I be wary of most grains then if these two bother him?TinaSeptember 3, 2007 at 12:08 am #42089In reply to: Wheat issues?

Inactiveno, it does not necessarily mean you have celiac disease if you have a problem with wheat and/or oats. celiacs can eat oats, but most commercially produced oats are crosscontaminated. i buy guaranteed gluten free oats for my girls and they don’t have any problem with them. they are also quite pricey. you can be a celiac and not be allergic to wheat and you can be allergic to wheat and not be a celiac—either way, you still can’t eat wheat.

Inactiveokay i feel dumb!! I guess I was thinking oats=wheat
duh…
so are oats a common allergen?i didn’t think about the cross contamination. I buy an organic brand that is soy free, but i didn’t look to see if it said anything about where is it processed.so if you have a problem with oats/wheat/etc does that mean you have celiac disease? sorry for my ignorance!TinaSeptember 2, 2007 at 8:51 pm #42079In reply to: Wheat issues?
hellbennt
Keymasterisn’t there cross-contamination? I think celiacs need to buy oats that are labled that they are not processed where wheat is…

InactiveHI and Welcome. I agree with what the other ladies have said. About MSPI from what I have learned…. thickiening with cereal only made Cooper worse b/c the rice cereal proteins mimic the protein in milk and therefore if your lo does have MSPI then that could be part of the problem. We are almost 6 1/2 months old and have only had fruits and veggies. I am going to try Oatmeal cereal next week after we are done with all the fruits and veggie trials. I also wouldn’t give oatmeal or barley cereal until after 6 months b/c of the gluten which can increase the risk for celiac dz. Just a few of my thoughts. I am not a doctor, but my hubby is a pharmacist and I am dietitian, so I am pretty comfortable with all this medical stuff. I just couldn’t imagine going through this if I didn’t have the background that I do.

Inactivebeing off of gluten before testing can DEFINITELY mess up the test results. ideally, when someone with celiac disease has been gluten free long enough, their blood tests will show negative for celiac disease, even though they will always have celiac disease. molly is so careful about how she eats that she is able to keep her blood levels in the normal range. the twins have been know to cheat, and it shows in their blood tests when they do. your allergist may be good with allergies, but he doesn’t seem to know alot about celiac. there is so much new info being learned about it, that i think some of the newly diagnosed celiacs might know more about it than some “veteran” celiacs that haven’t kept up-to-date with the new info.

InactiveThanks for the info. I just remembered that when he had his testing done, he had already been off of gluten for quite a while. I can look for the testing dates, but I think he’d been off gluten for over a month (at least) at the time of the blood test. Would this affect the results according to what you know? At the time I was scared that our allergist would have my re-introduce gluten prior to testing and he said that wasn’t necessary. Just curious if this is something you’ve heard about.
Thanks again!August 10, 2007 at 8:39 pm #40863In reply to: blood test for celiac disease

Inactivewe did not do any gluten challenges with our kids because they tested positive with a tissue transglutaminse (Ttg) test. we did follow up bloodwork and all 3 of them had their blood levels drop after being gluten free. Ttg is pretty specific for celiac. it is the newest test that they do for celiac. sylvia has tested negative so far, but i worry about her a little because of her enamel problems. she also has had a rash on her bum for ages. i thought it was the diapers, but now that she is potty trained she is still dry and rashy looking off and on. her ribs really stand out, too. i guess she is still pretty skinny. one of the kids also commented to me the other day that sylvia’s bm’s are always so big and sometimes pale. hopefully this is all nothing.
as far as reintroducing foods, i have heard of doing it in a similar way that you have described, but since you are not quite sure what you are dealing with, i think i’d keep track of any and all reactions he may have to new foods over a period of time. people seem to react so differently to gluten when they have a problem with it. it is no wonder that celiac disease and non-celiac gluten intolerances are so hard to diagnose. some people go strictly by dietary trials because they see such improvement regardless of what test results they get. -
