InactiveJames was weighed again on Wednesday and had gone down to 12kg. I know that is a very small weight loss but it feels like we are going downhill again. The dietician has not been in contact like she said she would. She finally rang today after me leaving a couple of messages but unfortunately I was not in. She is supposed to ring me tomorrow afternoon so hopefully she will. I am wanting to discuss ways of getting more calories into James as he still will not have anything apart from raisins and neocate advance so I think we either need to change his formula or add extra calories to the neocate.

InactiveCarson was on Duo-Cal a while ago. It is fat and carbs. It comes in a powder and is made by the same company that makes Neocate. It is a fine powder that you can mix to almost anything. We didn’t stick with it too long as I think it upset Carson’s stomach – gee, what doesn’t?! But, it may help get the calories if he would tolerate it. They may have a sample can for you – that is what we tried.

InactiveOn last post I meant to sday he had gone to 12.5kg. We have read on another board that a mum started mixing her 2 year olds neocate with rice milk instead of water and that helped her put weight on nicely. She put on 3lb in 3 months which is great and stopped the doctors from wanting to put her on nightly tube feeds to boost her calorie intake. We are now going to give this a try with James. I know it not sort the problem out but at least it might boost his weight in the short term.

InactiveI would ask your dietician about it just to make sure it’s okay. I know it sounds stupid, but powdered formulas are made to be a certain concentration. Overloading them too much can overload the kidneys. I’m sure it’s fine, but I would double check with one of your son’s care providers just to make sure. (We always added stuff to Hailey’s formula too by the way. It did help to put weight on. Also wondering if he can do a hypo supplement instead of neocate given his age.)

InactiveJames still only has the neocate advance and raisins. If we give James a hypo supplement instead of the neocate advance how would we get the extra calories into him. James is already not taking enough most weeks so not sure how that would work, unless it is some kind of special supplement drink.

InactiveI don’t know what neocate advance is, is that just regular neocate or neocate for older kids? Sorry, I was just thinking out loud, I don’t know what else to suggest except the duocal, or rice milk added like you suggested. I guess the kidney concern is probably moreso with young babies. I forgot he’s older. Good luck.

InactiveNeocate advance is for children aged between 1 and 10, at least that what it says on the website. James is prescribed it as a milk alternative but obviously it is pretty much his sole food. James is 2years 8 months so not sure if it would have an effect on his kidneys or not.

InactiveI mix Carson’s Neocate with rice milk. It adds an extra 13 calories per ounce. It does make it even more expensive to give a bottle due to the rice milk cost but it helps get the calories into the LO’s. We are mixing Carson’s to give him 24 calories of Neocate per ounce and then with the extra 13 ounces, we get 37 calories per ounce. It still seems hard to get him to gain, though. I can’t imagine what he would be like if we DIDN”T mix the rice drink with the Neocate. He also takes it better as it tastes like melted ice cream.
We tried many things and when this worked I called our nutritionist and she was thrilled and pleased that we would get an extra 13 calories per ounce. We have never had any constipation problems or kidney problems. Carson is thoroughly looked over at least every other Friday by Dr. Neidich – the Peds GI Specialist here at our Children’s Hospital. I think we were so desperate that we just tried everything and God pointed us in this direction.
I know how hard it is. Keep your chin up. I have really bad days thinking that THIS IS MY JOB. TO FEED MY CHILD. How hard can that be? Really? To get enough food into your child to make him thrive? It is so very difficult with these little ones. I truly know what you are going through. I don’t really have any advice except that we go day-by-day. 2 bad days. 1 good day. 3 bad days. 2 good days. I hope he takes the rice milk mixture and that it will give him enough calories until he can tolerate/wants to eat other foods.
Big Hugs to you! I wish we lived in the same city!!!!!!

Inactivebrenda-we have an appt-but not for a while. i was wondering if you could explain to me how you mix the neocate to get 24 cal? and when you add rice milk, how much of that do you add per ounce?
May 31, 2007 at 10:56 am #35106Anonymous
InactiveGood luck. I hope it’s the answer for him! HUGS!

InactiveSure! I have a print out from our nutritionist with instructions. I will type most of it out – or paraphrase!
To make 24 ounce per ounce formula, pour the recommended amount of liquid into a container. Add the prescribed amount of powder listed below and level off with a dry knive. Cover tightly and shake for 15-20 seconds.
5 fluid ounces of water PLUS 7 scoops of Neocate = approx 6 oz liquid.
7 fluid ounces of water PLUS 10 scoops of Neocate = approx 8 oz liquid.
I usually do the 2nd one at bedtime for his bottle. I just pour 7 ounces of Rice Dream in a 10 ounce bottle and heat it 11 seconds in our microwave – just to room temperature. I then add 10 scoops of Neocate and shake, shake, shake!
He doesn’t take the whole bottle – ever. While reading books b4 bed, I give him drinks or say – now we will read another book but you should take a drink first…… But when he wakes or just before he goes to sleep, I give him the bottle and he drinks it much better when he is half asleep.
I hope this helps! Give it a try. We were given a 28 calorie sheet from the nutritionist, but it was too much for Carson. He was constipated and miserable.
With Carson, the 24 calories seems a good fit – gives him the extra calories and doesn’t bother his little system.Good luck!! Try it and let me know if he takes it!
We don’t use the Rice Dream. We use a cheaper version but basically the same thing. With Neocate as expensive as it is, we opted for the cheaper rice milk.

Inactivethanks. i am thinking about trying that with some of his bottles. i cant afford to do it with all of them just yet. i have some westsoy brand rice drink. the rice dream i noticed contains gluten. thanks so much for that help. do you use plain or vanilla flavor rice milk?
May 31, 2007 at 1:50 pm #35130Anonymous
InactiveWe use the WestSoy brand also. Carson passed his gluten biopsy so we don’t watch out for gluten. The WestSoy rice drink that we buy usually goes on sale at 2 for $3.00. He doesn’t take much in the way of a bottle, so they do last several days.
We use the vanilla flavor. I have accidentally bought the plain and he didn’t seem to mind – but when I tried it, I liked the vanilla better!

I think we use a rice carton every 3 days – so it’s not really that much more. When you think of how much the Neocate is, it really does add up, though.

Inactiveim on foodstamps so the rice milk isnt an issue. its the neocate that is the issue. we are currently getting 13 cans a month for free and we use them up completely. if i start adding extra scoops we are going to have to buy some neocate out of pocket and im not sure if we will be able to do that. i dont work and my sons dad is in school and works but not much

its ridiculous how much they can charge for formula. it isnt right. $31 dollars for a can we use in 2 days.
May 31, 2007 at 2:49 pm #35140Anonymous
InactiveOh, I know. It is horrible!! We have been paying for it out of pocket. We have gone through our savings account lickety split. Thousands of dollars a year. Unbelievable. Mind boggling.
I wonder if you get your nutritionist or specialist or peds doc aboard the increase in calories and using the rice milk, which I don’t think would be hard, ours was just THRILLED that Carson was taking in more calories… Anyway, if you can get one of them to write on their prescription pad that Trace needs Neocate mixed at 24 calories and to do that he will need X more scoops per day. Can you then give that to your food stamp office and see if they will give you maybe even 2 or 3 more cans a month? It may be worth a try but I don’t know if they have a set amount of cans you can get – no matter what the circumstance. I hope they would be considerate toward Trace’s troubles.
