InactiveI spoke to the dietician yesterday and she is now getting our GP to prescribe duocal for James. We should get the prescription next Tuesday. I am hoping this will boost his weight as we had to stop using rice milk due to it flaring James’s eczema up. He has had rice milk before but only in small quantities. Luckily his eczema seems to be calming down quickly since we stopped the rice milk.

InactiveGood luck with the Duocal. I hope it helps him put on some weight. That’s surprisng to me that rice milk would cause eczema
but I’m sure glad you figured it out and glad that his eczema is calming down. Who would have thought? So what does he drink now?June 8, 2007 at 10:56 am #35983Anonymous
InactiveIs he drinking almond milk?? I thought about trying it but wondered about allergies – although almonds are not a mold nut so it may be alright. This stuff is the pits!
With the DuoCal, it did bother Carson but I started out with the dose they told me. It is truly fat and carbs so I think it was a little shock to his system. I would start slowly and go up from there. I could tell when he had too much when he seemed to have tummy trouble and then eventually by his diapers – ugh!!! I hope it works for you. It can sure add the calories and give them what they don’t get in other foods that they have to avoid. I wonder if your insurance will cover it?

InactiveJames has gone back to drinking neocate advance mixed with water. We had started making it with rice milk instead of water to boost the calorie content. Unfortunately his eczema gradually got worse the more he had. We were unsure if it was the rice milk at first as the weather had started to get warmer at the same time. When we removed the rice milk his eczema calmed down again and was slepping much better again.
We will not have to fight with insurance companies to get duocal as we live in the UK and get it free on the nhs. I am glad I don’t have the extra battle of fighting insurance companies, its hard enough fighting for treatment at times.
We have been told to start very slow with the duocal. Our dietician has recomended 1 level tsp to every 7oz of neocate advance for first week and then 1 heaped tsp to every 7oz neocate advance for next 3 weeks. At this point the dietician then wants to review things.

InactiveGreat!
I hope the Duocal works well for him. Let us know how it goes.June 21, 2007 at 1:15 am #37454Anonymous
InactiveLast week James had gone back to 12.5kg before starting the duocal. He has now been on the duocal for a week on a small dose. I had James weighed yesterday and he had gone down to 12.22kg. This was a bit of a shock as I had expected him to gain weight. I suppose it could be too soon to be seeing results. I have also noticed that James has only had 2 bowel movements since being on duocal. We have now got an additional challenge as James has started with hayfever and also a cold on top of that we think so he is now only taking a small amount of neocate. This started yesterday so don’t think that would have anything to do with the weight loss. I was wondering if it is possible that James is not tolerating the duocal? He is also very itchy as eczema has flared a little but not sure if thats the cold or a reaction to the duocal. Any advice would be very welcome as our dietician just told me that it is very unlikely that the duocal would cause a problem and just to carry on with it.

InactiveIt is so horrible that you are dealing with so much with James and his weight. This should be a tiime when we are enjoying our toddlers. I am sorry we are paddling in the same boat. Carson, too, has been so bad — since May 18, so I have only been lurking and just trying to sleep and keep my sanity without biting anyone’s head off for lunch.
With Carson, he is on another antibiotic (so is it the sinus trouble??), or is it the Singulair (bothering him) or is it something he ate?? It is maddening. I would give the DuoCal another week. If James isn’t eating as much Neocate, that could be the trouble – but, it could also be the Duo Cal. With hayfever (Carson has allergies also) – they reek havok with reflux and cause the body to produce more mucus to rid itself of the hayfever – and when you aren’t feeling well – you don’t eat as much. We let Carsons go a while and gave him Singulair and he never got better. The antibiotic helped IMMENSELY but that only lasts 10 days – we are now on round 2 and he was better last night. Of course, I didn’t give him the Singulair, so was it the Singulair or the antibiotic kicking in again??!?!?! I will wait a day or two to try the Singulair again. I am scared to death to have Carson weighed next Friday. Why, why is this happening to our little ones? I am also sick of seeing my chubby neighbor playing with Carson and I crave to have some of that double neck on Carson.

I think it is going to be hard to sort out the allergy/hayfever/sinus infection and the Duocal. When Carson’s allergies are bad – he is SO bad. Have you tried Singulair or Zyrtec? Of course, they take a while to kick in – and by then their little heads could be so congested and get an infection.
Our spec was surprised that the DuoCal didn’t agree with Carson but then James and Carson seem to stump a lot of doctors! Keep on keeping on. It is so hard. I do think we will be truly rewarded in the end!!

InactiveIt may take a while to see an improvement with his weight from the duocal. How many calories is it per tsp? If he can’t tolerate the duocal, you can ask your dietician about how much you can safely concentrate the neocate.

InactiveJames has not drank much neocate advance onver the last few days. He only drank 8oz yesterday in total. THe only other think he had was raisins and water. I did not give apple juice incase he filled himself up on that. I have not been giving duocal the last day and a half incase thta was the problem but that has made no difference. Last night James was crying in pain on and off for a good few hours. I think he was probably hungry but was refusing the neocate. He finally drank 5oz this morning but that still is not much really. I am hoping to speak to the consultant and dietician today.
Brenda, How is Carson doing at the moment? How did his weigh in go on Friday? I read somewhere else about your fustration with his limited food list. I hope this gets better for you soon.

InactiveKelly: Carson has been so bad since mid May. He did get a lower eye tooth and another is trying to poke through. He could have allergies but has such a time with any meds (Zyrtec, Singulair). When I DO think, hurrah, and I make something new, then he has such a bad evening/night and I think – was it the new food?? I am so ready for this to be over. I am so ready to quit second guessing myself. We go in this Friday to the spec to get weighed and air some of my frusterations. Not sure what he will do but he is usually good to give me hope and something else to try.
Carson’s staple food is baby rice cereal – he will always eat that. It sounds like James’ fav is raisins. Clearly, they cannot survive on Neocate and raisins/rice cereal when they are 3 or 4 – can they?? Does your doc say that things are going to turn around soon? I went on kidswithfoodallergies.org and it scared me to death. There are parents who list several children with so many allergies and foods they avoid. I just haven’t grasped the allergies and said – well, this could be how we have to live – I still think we will outgrow. Do you also think he will outgrow? I think this is such a hard thing – when kids won’t eat and the foods that I THINK he would like, he can’t have.
Carson usually has 7-8 ounces of Neocate b4 and during the night and then at naptime I can usually get 3-4 oz in him. But, I don’t think that is very much. Sounds like what James is taking. Does he still take it in a bottle? Carson won’t do it any other way – I don’t care. Just glad he is taking in something. At this point, I have such different feelings than when my others were little. We do anything to survive around here.
What does James weigh now? Won’t he be 3 in ?September?

InactiveHi Brenda, I am so sorry you and Carson are going through this. It is so hard when they will not eat and would be great to be able to offer any food you like. When you are working with a restricted amount of foods it is really hard. James’s favourite is raisins and is the only thing he will eat at the moment along with the neocate advance. James brought me a jar of food from the cupboard yesterday and was really excited. I asked if he wanted it and he ran into the kitchen and got a bowl out. I warmed the food and found James sitting at his little table being very kiddy. I put the food in front of him and gave him a spoon and he gave it back to me. I went to give him a tiny spoonful and all of a sudden he looked terrified and started sobbing. It took 10 minutes to calm him down and we then had to throw the food away. I had got so excited when he wanted the food and it hurt so much when he reacted the way he did.
I am hoping James will outgrow his allergies but not showing any signs of it at the moment. My father in law gave him a mini cheddar when we were out when I had gone to the toilet. James had only taken 2 small bites and his face had flared with eczema, lips were puffy, eyes puffy and he had hives on his back within 5 minutes of this happening. James did not sleep well that night at all, he kept having screaming fits and was pulling at his belly. The next day he had 3 bery bad nappies. The worst thing about this incident was that my father in law did not think he had done anything wrong and said that at least he really seemed to like it. That really hurt knowing that he had liked it but could not have it again. It does make you wonder how they can survive on such a limited diet.
James is now drinking about 20oz a day of neocate advance. He used to drink 30oz a day, then went right down to 8-10oz a day for 3 days and now got him up to 20oz but he is not willing to take anymore at the moment. I had James weighed today and he is 27lb. If it helps James was only 21lb at 23 months so much the same as Carson. James had a good patch which boosted his weight but then started going downhill again. I am hoping we can get James to stop loosing weight and start adding a few foods into his diet. Thats my plan but James seems to be working from a different one at the moment. James has been taking his neocate advance from a cup with a spoot, I think they are called sippy cups in the US. This has only been for about 4 months now though as he would not drink it from one at first. I just kept offering it occasionally and all of a sudden it was a big hit. James will not take any from an open cup though, I think it is probably due to the smell.
I will keep my fingers crossed for Carson’s weigh in on Friday and that you get some useful advice.

InactiveJames was weighed today and is now 12.66kg (27.15lb). This is good news and means that the duocal is obviously helping him put weight on. The only thing that bothers me is that his poos have been mucousy on and off and smell terrible. I guess we will see how it goes for a while longer as we see the consultant on 3oth July and see what he thinks then. We are also getting some samples of neocate active and flavour sachets to try from the dietician, but may wait until we have seen consultant for those.
