InactiveI’m not sure if I asked this question before but please forgive me if I have. As some of you know, Ariella was born at 37 weeks weighing 5.7 lbs. Does being born small increase your chances of having reflux? I see how happy 8,9,10 pounders are and it got me wondering if it’s b/c their digestive system is well matured. Any thoughts on that?

InactiveOh, sorry, the title was supposed to read “what does one have to do with the other”? Another sleepless night puts me in the zombie mode.

InactiveI think that I may ruin this theory just a bit. Isaac was a 8lb 8oz full term boy and he was not happy at all

InactiveI think it has a lot more to do with genetics than size.

InactiveI think that mainly applies to small, premature babies. When they’re premature they are more likely to have underdeveloped digestive systems maybe?
My oldest was 8 1/2 pounds, and BOY did he have reflux and colic! He projectile vomited all the time. So, for us, it’s genetics, not size!Have a great night

InactiveSarah was 8lb 1oz and came out spitting fire!!! I think Emily was right that prematurity can cause reflux, but more so in much smaller babies. I wish I knew the “magic” answer for what caused reflux. I have pondered if “induced” or “preterm” babies are more prone to reflux, but I was proved wrong by several people! You just never know!

InactiveJustice was almost 10 lbs. He was 9 lb 8 oz and he had reflux. Sorry.

InactiveShane was 9 pounds.. and happy for only one week
..I too think there are many reasons for reflux/colic.. and one is immature digestive system, and those are likely to be found in pre-term babies. But, who knows why Shane has/had it?! His father was colicky.. and I was a Happy Spitter.. put those two together and you get Shane.. haha. So, genetics play in some how too i suppose.
Good Question though 😉September 14, 2007 at 6:36 am #42639Anonymous
InactiveI think prematurity might be one of the causes of reflux…regardless of size. Alana was a big prem…5 weeks early but 6.6 pounds. At first everyone was saying…oh she will be fine in a couple of days… she is so big. But she had every common prem problem including feeding problems. I think maybe the reason she has grown out of her reflux is because she had an underdeveloped system and now she doesn’t. Who knows really, its just my theory!

InactiveI don’t think so either. Cooper was 9lbs 11oz and was only 4 days early (done b/c we knew he was going to be a big boy) so I think size doesn’t really have much to do with it.

InactiveMy boys varied quite a bit in size.
Isaac was 5lb 12 oz – No reflux at all
Parker was 7lb 6 oz. – No reflux at all
Bryce was 4lb 12oz (and 4 weeks early)- severe refluxI think Bryce’s prematurity could have contributed to his reflux, but mostly his is mostly a result of his genetic syndrome as we’ve found out reflux & digestive problems are common in kids with kabuki syndrome. I guess there are many factors that contribute to reflux depending on the child.

InactiveThank you, ladies, for your responses. I was kind of hoping that it’s not genetics. DH was telling me that he can’t handle another reflux baby (I’m 12 weeks pregnant). His comment upset me a little bit but I do know what he means. Ariella’s still such a cranky baby. We figured she’s just a difficult child b/c no matter what we do, she’s just not happy. *sigh* Since they’ll be 18 months apart, I pray and pray for lots of strength. Thanks for listening to my rant.

InactiveOh Marianna.. I am sorry that Ariella isnt happy still! Hopefully when she turns a year and starts walking and starts to grow out of reflux things will change!.. Shane is a crank pot too.. not ALL the time.. but around 40% of the time! He just gives me a hard time..and is VERY stubborn.
And dont worry God will give you strength.. it doesnt seem like it now.. but when the baby gets here..i have heard of mothers just getting the strength to take care of two..and they have no clue where it came from! Hopefully they will be close as they get older..and all the hard work will be paid off!! 😉September 14, 2007 at 7:53 pm #42689hellbennt

InactiveWell, I know it hurt you to hear your husband say that, but to be honest with you, I felt that way too when I found out I was pregnant with our second son. I was just SO worried about having another reflux/colicky baby and just was not as excited as I would have been had I not just been through that. I sort of envied those moms who have those easy babies and just feel so relaxed and excited about the next one, because I honestly was very scared about it.
I know he will come around when the baby is born if he/she is another refluxer, and hopefully you won’t have to deal with that again! But, if you do, you will be better prepared this time and will probably not waste one minute getting the help your new little one needs. -
