InactiveI’ve tried moving Dagney onto the Stage 3 foods, but she seems to hate the teeny tiney little bits of food in them. She may cry or even spit it out. I’ve also tried giving her the cut up fruits & veggies that Gerber & Beechnut sells in the jar and she really hates those, and shoots them back out of her mouth…any suggestions? Is this normal? She LOVES puffs, but none of these other things I’ve tried yet (green beans, peas, apples, pears, she seems to be ok w/ peaches, though). Should I be concerned? Should I just keep trying to give them to her?
Also, most nights she ends up falling asleep or gets really drowsy drinking her bedtime bottle, so many nights I don’t get a chance to wipe off her teeth (she’s got 4) before she goes to sleep, but I try at least to do it before the bottle. The last few days she actually has only been eating about 1/2 of the bottle, and has pushed it away and rubbed her eyes, cuddled, and just wanted to go to bed. Does this mean she’s starting to wean herself from the bedtime bottle? I’ll keep giving it to her, obviously, and she’ll drink whatever she wants, but I don’t want to push her to eat more than she wants either. I don’t have a huge amount of real hands-on baby experience other than with my own, but was I wrong in thinking that most babies drink a full bottle before bedtime for a while?
Someone mentioned a good feeding book for babies last week, which I need to check into…

InactiveI think the book may have been, Feed Me, I’m Your’s. If not Lori posted it….maybe you can pm her.
About the teeth. I would suggest that you wipe her teeth even if she falls asleep. I’ve done that with all three of mine and they get used to it. Myles actually used to open his mouth as his eyes were rolling back into his head because he knew getting his teeth wiped was the last step before going into the crib.
It’s not worth the risk of tooth decay to avoid waking her, IMO. I think it’s best if she’s not totally zonked when you lay her down anyway as far as sleep training goes.As for the chunky foods. NONE of my babies would eat them and MOST of the babies I cared for as a nanny/babysitter wouldn’t eat them either. Most babies find the textured foods very confusing. They don’t know if they are supposed to chew or swallow. So, they usually go from purees to soft table foods. Neither of my three would eat those Gerber Diced fruits or veggies either. Too slimey I think.

InactiveHey Denise,
Claire HATED the stage 3 foods. She would never eat them, no matter how many times I tried. She would actually gag on them, and that kid has the dullest gag reflex around. I think she just couldn’t figure out if she was supposed to swallow or chew. I wouldn’t worry about it.
As for the solids… I would just keep offering them to her. She is probably getting used to the new texture, and it may just take her time to figure out what to do with it. The puffs and the peaches are so soft that they probably dissolve well. She may just need some time to figure out that she has to mash it up. Have you tried cut up bananas? Claire loved this and so does Ben (but they hurt his tummy). He still starts laughing and waving his arm whenever he sees one! I haven’t tried it yet with Ben, but maybe some soft boiled potatoes?? or even mashed potatoes made with safe milk? Ben also likes baked sweet potato. I just nuke it in the microwave and scoop out little piles for him to mash into his mouth.
As for the bottle, I wouldn’t be too concerned. I’m nursing, so I’m totally sure how it goes ounces wise, but Ben certainly doesn’t nurse for as long at night as he used to. He pulls off and just wants to rock .. sometimes even leans over like he wants in his crib ! (though then he will play in there for 20 minutes before falling asleep
.How’s the Prevacid wean going? Well, I hope. Once we get this ear infection mess under control, I’m hoping that we can at least start lower his dose some.

InactiveThe book Lori recommended to me was Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense by Ellyn Satter. I just got it in the mail today, so I’ll let you know what I think when I’m done with it.

InactiveDenise, I would probably just go to finger goods and see how she goes. How many times to we eat the textures of Stage 3 foods anyway. Even my mashed potato is finer than that!!

InactiveYeah, I think the Stage 3 foods are weird too. They get confused on what they are supposed to do with it! Chew or swallow?
Sarah’s biggest bottle is right before bed (8oz). She will usually drink the whole thing but if she only takes part of it, I don’t push it. I hate that it’s her biggest feed because pretty soon we’ll be cutting it out (maybe substituting with a milk sippy…but still). Maybe Dagney doesn’t need the whole bottle anymore. Have you noticed that she wakes sooner if she doesn’t have a full bottle? If you don’t notice any difference then I would say she might be ready to be done, or at least cut back.
I’d keep trying some solid foods and see if it just takes her a while to get used to them. (veggie/fruit pieces or whatever) My friends little girl is 1 year old and having a reallllllly tough time with solids (gags like crazy). She doesn’t even like purees. Her doctor wasn’t concerned by this and told her to just keep trying. Sometimes it just takes longer I guess. Good luck!!!!

Keymastershe’s 9 months?
give her tiny pieces of what you’re eating- little pieces of steamed veggies, fruit, etc- she’ll eventually get the hang of it

beans from the can are great, too at this age

InactiveAlex hated all diced foods – everything that wasn’t a stage 1 or 2 puree – at that age. Now, just three months later, she’s an eating machine! She eats everything that Kaelyn eats. We just cut most of it up in tinier pieces. One of her favorites right now is green beans. She loves to pick one up and chomp it quickly into pieces. It’s actually very funny to watch.

InactiveThanks everyone! I ended up having to take Dagney to the Pedi today for something non-related (she has mosquito bites all over her legs and arms—I was afraid it was something horrible, but I think they’re just attracted to the sweet smelling “calming lotion” I put on her arms & legs before bed, so I cut that out tonight!). The nurse practitioner said her kids hated the stage 3 too, and just try table food too. She’s never had broccoli before, do kids usually have problems with it, or you think I can go for it? I’ll probably try little pasta, potatoes (not at the same time!) whatever else I can think of.

InactiveMyles has been eating broccoli since he was 6 months old. It’s his favorite veggie. She may have some stinky toots from it, but I don’t think it will cause her any discomfort. Are you going to puree it? I’ve been pureeing Myles’ broccoli for months because our stores don’t sell it anymore and he won’t eat unless it’s pureed. Broccoli is one of those veggies that is super healthy and proven to prevent cancer, so if you can get her to acquire a taste for it at a young age, that would be great!! Good luck!
Oh, and I’m glad the doctor reassured you about the stage 3’s. It surprised me that the baby food companies keep making it – it’s so gross!June 29, 2007 at 9:55 am #38263hellbennt
Keymasterthere are great threads about finger foods 🙂
look in groupie intro & even in the ‘main’ mspi’ page for ideas 🙂broccoli is fine- I just break/cut off bits from the floretsfor fun: I cut zuccini and yellow squash into thin circles/slices & then I steam them & then I put it on Ari’s thumb, LOLOL bcse that way he can munch on it w/o it slipping out of his hand 😉sweet potatos are good, too- steamed, baked, whateversame goes for squashsteamed fruit slices (these can be frustrating due to the slime factor, lol, so you can coat them in cheerio crumbs)June 29, 2007 at 10:00 am #38265Anonymous
InactiveThey are all different when it comes to eating. My two oldest ate chunkier foods fine by 9 months. Caden is 8 months and is starting to become interested in chunkier foods and beginning to chew, but I have friends whose babies weren’t ready for chunky foods until after 9 months. She will get it soon, don’t worry
As for wiping the teeth…I’m a breastfeeding mom, but with our 3rd child, adopted from China, I gave her a bed time bottle until she was 18 months old (for bonding and attachment purposes), and I asked her ped about it. He said not to worry. The decay mostly comes from babies who are allowed to actually sleep WITH the bottle, and the milk begins to pool around the teeth while they’re sleeping. He said the milk on the teeth right before bed is not a problem.Good luck!June 29, 2007 at 11:07 am #38276Anonymous
InactiveBen always hated the chunks in the stage 3 foods as well – it’s amazing the accuracy they have in spitting out something specific, like a pea, while keeping the rest of the food in their mouth! I actually used to mash the stage 3 food through a plastic strainer I had using a large serving spoon. It made the chunks much smaller, and got him used to the new texture. After a while he got used to having chunks in his food, and I was able to stop mashing it.

InactiveAlex LOVES the broccoli. I just take some of the pieces that I’ve steamed for Kaelyn and make sure they are a manageable size for her. I’ve never pureed it for her. I just started giving it to her about a month ago.

InactiveI posted this originally a few weeks ago, when we were starting the food bits along with trying to wean Dagney from the Prevacid. It turns out it wasn’t the food bits or stage 3 foods she hated per se, but it apparently hurt her throat because she was no longer properly medicated. Once we got her back up to the 30 mg for a few days, she seemed to be ok again with the peach bits, tiny baked potato bits, and green bean bits (and of course, puffs…). Now, however, it seems to be bothering her again somtimes. Once in a while she’ll start to cry if it’s anything thicker than the strained fruits (I’m pretty sure it’s the texture and not just that she doesn’t like the food she’s eating). She also seems to choke on the tiny bits very easily. She’s never truly choked, so I’m not sure if you’d call it choke or gag, but how much of that is part of the normal learning to eat/chew/swallow routine, and how much should I be concerned about? She’s also clearing her throat and refluxing a lot again, eventhough she’s been back up to the 30mg/day for about 1 1/2 weeks or so (and we’ve been giving her Carafate 2-3x/day for at least 2-3 weeks now too). She never did this before the wean, but now it really sounds like everything is coming up and she’s swallowing it back down again. She seems startled and sometimes seems bothered by it, but I’m also concerned she can choke because it happens while she’s eating, while I’m giving her the little bits (I actually cut the bits to about 1/2 or 1/3 of the size of the food bits in the Gerber/Beechnut jars, so these aren’t large by any means!). We have decided to go ahead with the endoscopy, which will be on 26 July and hopefully be ok, but I’m just concerned. She by no means has a feeding aversion, but I’m so afraid that if this goes on long she could get one, and I really don’t want that to happen. She may be teething, but I don’t see any imminent teeth eruptions. Could allergies play a role in this too–my husband and I both have hayfever type allergies, could they affect the acid in any way? We have an appointment with an allergist in August, so if we need to do that, we’ll go. I just don’t want to put her through anything she doesn’t need to go through, like the allergy skin testing, but if it can give us more info as to what’s bothering her, I guess it’s worth it.dfb052007-07-15 20:39:20
