InactiveI have read a lot about giving a new formula several weeks to see if it is working, but when you have a baby who does really well on the new one for 6 or 7 consecutive days…and then it goes down hill in a hurry again, does that warrant a switch of formulas sooner? I would think so, but just wanted to confirm it.

InactiveMy pead told me that I should try a new formula for at least two weeks to three weeks…reasoning…1) all babies have good days and bad days, so you are bound to get some bad days due to anything (eg teething, out of routine and 2) it takes at least two weeks for the last formula to be totally eliminated from the system. Thats what she said to me anyhow. I know this is hard (personal experience) because no one likes to see their baby in pain/sick/irritable- definately not! But she said if we don’t give it a proper try we will never know. I don’t really know if this is good advice, it was just the advice I was given?

InactiveEven when we switched to Neocate for Dylan, it was worse (and believe me when I tell you I couldn’t imagine it being any worse!!!) for the first week while the old forumula worked it’s way out of his system. Then he gradually got better and we had a new baby on Neocate. He was also on a high dose of prevacid at the time, but with the Neocate, we immediately were able to cut the dose by 1/3 because his reflux was secondary to the milk/soy intolerance.
I would try the Neocate, and not necessarily wait the two weeks on soy. Hopefully it will be the answer!!!
Good Luck!

InactiveMy feeling is that it probably does take a good two weeks to see if a formula is helping or not, BUT if a formula seems to help for several days and then things go downhill, it was probably a honeymoon period and it’s not going to work. I think when they say try it for two weeks they mean when there’s no change initially, it may take two weeks to see a change because it takes that long for the body to rid itself of the built up proteins.
I’m not an MSPI or formula expert, but that’s my best guess. I’d try the Neocate right away instead of sticking with Soy.

Inactivehow about nutramigen? should i even bother trying that first? the alimentum was the same thing, with about a 4 day “honeymoon” period. i am not worried about the expense of neocate at this point…i just want to make him better!

Inactivealimnetum and nutrimagen are basically the same, just different brands. you may need to try neocate.

InactiveThanks, Laura. Wow – that info on MSPI is amazing. I feel that Jacob definitely has this issue…that’s why I am toying with the idea of going straight to Neocate (rather than trying the Nutramigen). However, we have our GI appt on Thursday, so perhaps I will do Nutramigen until we go….ah! This makes my head spin!

Inactiveanother question – if the neocate turns out to also be a failure, is that when docs suspect that there may be another (structural/anatomical) issue?
