InactiveHi Lauren,
Here is the sight with the “recipe” for goat’s milk formula:http://askdrsears.com/html/3/t032401.asp
We don’t use this, but we fortify Bryce’s breastmilk with goat’s milk powder (to give it more calories).
If you buy the Meyenburg brand, it has vitamin D & folic acid already added, so I think you just need to add rice syrup. (Not sure about a multivitamin, but I know there are moms on here who would know. Hopefully they’ll chime in.)
Good luck!

Inactiveohh ohk, so it doesnt need more protien??? and what if i only do the milk and not the powdered? i heard the powdered taste and smells awful! but i guess it couldnt be much worse than alimentum

but thanks heather, hopefully i will get him on it soon, once i figure everything out, i just want to be careful!

InactiveI’m not sure what the regular (unconcentrated) goat’s milk has in it. The powder that we have doesn’t smell or taste bad (just smells like any other goat’s milk). Bryce doesn’t mind the taste at all, but you might could just transition him slowly if he doesn’t like it.

Inactivehey christine,
sorry i didnt see your thread before.. yes he is doing ok on the alimentum.. sleeping is still funny.. and not often
, but we are having a hard time affording it, and i just have heard good things about goats… i am aware of the protien similaritys and i dont think shane is mspi, we just have him on this because he does digest it better and because of the rtf is easier to stay down.. he didnt have a reaction to the goodstart trial, but it just didnt seem he digested it as well because of the curds and it wasnt as thick as the alimentum soo it came up all day … but he didnt have poo problems or rash or crankiness at all.. soo i just am looking for something easier on his system and a lot of parents i have talked to in the past told me about goats… sooo i am trying to decide on what to do… but thanks for the thread and link!November 27, 2006 at 8:34 pm #19091Anonymous
InactiveHi Lauren,
I’m actually considering Goat’s milk for Myles at this point because he been getting bad diaper rashes from whole milk. I don’t know if Goat’s milk will be any better, but I may try it if he keeps getting these rashes.
I certainly understand your dilemna. If we had to buy Alimentum at $7 or $8 a bottle, we’d be charging it because there’s no way we could afford it.
I’d just be concerned about his vitamin and mineral intake. Maybe you can ask for a multi vitamin for him and perhaps do 1/2 goats milk and 1/2 Alimentum for a while. Whatever you decide, I hope Shane does well.

Inactivethanks 🙂 we are actually charging it
…. it is very hard.but i am switching ped’s soon (i heard about one that is o.k w/ goats) so i will be very careful and ask her how to go about this, before making any changes on my own.
thanks so much, i hope myles starts to do better as well!
what was he on prior to whole milk?

InactiveWe actually have Taylor on Goat’s milk. We use the Dr Sears reciepe with the brown rice syrup we use the concentrated goats milk instead of the powder she seems to like the consistency of it better. We switched her from Alimentum to Goat’s milk she did much better but still had problems due to the milk protein. She is still on goat’s milk but only half and the other half Ross Carbohydrate Free soy. She is actually tolerating it very well. The dietican calculated the goat’s milk there is less calories but due to the vitamin D in it there is more protein so if you notice when you switch there is a low intake it is because of the higher protein, it makes the child full. So a small amount is needed for the tummy to feel full. In regards to the multivitamin, when Taylor was on just goats milk I did supplement her with iron since the goat’s milk does not contain any but the MD also did an anemia check on her just a finger stick and she was find this was even before she started cereal. Our Peds MD does support the goats milk since everything else has failed, she said she has had other premature babies on goats milk, it is not reccomemded but she is not against it especially if it works. The Peds GI feels the same way, he said there is no harm with goats milk especially if she gets all the vitamins and minerals she needs and I showed him the Dr Sears reciepe for the 20cal formula and he was quite impressed and was all for it since Taylor just can’t seem to tolerate anything including neocate.

Inactiveok thank you so much. that has helped a lot

InactiveWow! That’s great, Sue. I’m so glad you found something that Taylor can tolerate and that your ped is supportive and helpful regarding the goat’s milk.
Lauren, good luck with the new ped! It’s so important to have one you trust and can work with.
To answer your question, Myles was on mostly breast milk (with me being dairy free) for a year with some soy to supplement. Then Good Start starting around 10 months. I just can’t understand why he’d do fine on Good Start which is a milk formula, but get diaper rashes from acutal milk.
Anyway, please keep us posted. I’ll be very curious to see what your new ped thinks of goat’s milk and how Shane does on it. Good luck!

Inactivehi,
ok so i went to the new ped’s office today.. and she is fine with the goats.. and she told me that i didnt need to add anything to it , except a multi-vitamin that she prescibed. she said that he eats enough cereal and foods so that he didnt need the rice syrup.. is that right??? i hope thats ok.
soo.. today we are mixing half alimentum and half goats.. i need to go out and find it though!!! i will post and let you know how it goes….:)

InactiveI guess my understanding is the fridgerated goats milk is like drinking whole milk and mixing it with brown rice syrup is making it like an infant formula since it becomes a 20 calorie/oz formula. But I know that back when our parents were growing up they used just plain goats milk that was delivered so I guess it doesn’t make a difference. I think I just feel better since mixing makes it a formula calorie count.

InactiveI think I agree with Sue. Especially since he’s so young and probably getting most of his calories from formula. He might not get enough calories without the rice syrup. That’s just my opinion though.
You do what you think is best.Good luck with the goat’s milk!

InactiveGood luck, Lauren.
That’s great that she gave him a multi vitamin. Hopefully he’ll take it well. Myles hated it and wouldn’t take it until he was 10 or 11 months old….but he’s stubborn and he had a really bad gag reflex….hopefully Shane will take it well.
I guess his weight will indicate if he’s getting enough calories with the plain goat’s milk. He may want to eat more if it’s lower in calories than formula.
Keep us posted!

InactiveChristine,
Just a thought, but I thought Good Start was strictly Whey proteins while whole milk has both whey and casin? Maybe Myles is only sensitive to the casin proteins?
Who knows???

Inactiveok i am confused. on the dr. sears website do i do the formula for the whole milk or the one above it? i thought the baby needed whole milk or no? i am going to try and add the brown rice syrup anyhow. do you just mix it up and keep it in the fridge??
also if i decide to get the regular refigerated kind.. do i get the whole milk or the 1%??
