InactiveLike many of you I am at the end of my rope. My DD has now been diagnosed with a milk AND soy allergy. No dairy or soy products of any kind in any form. I have decided, after looking at the ingredients in nutramigen, alimentum…that I am going to make my own formula with Goats milk using the recipe on the Dr. Sears website.
According to my DH’s mother as well as many on my Dad’s side of the family, a lot of family members could only tolerate goats milk “back in the day”.
I am desperate enough to try anything and will keep you posted on our progress.
anyone else doing Goat? I know that my ped will never endorse this but I could really care less as he is not living with my precious DD who is screaming and in pain 7 – 9 hours a day.
I also bought some rice cereal to spoon feed her and some baby food to try in a few weeks.
is there anyone else doing Goats milk formula with success? How did you do it? I did a search and found a few names of women on here who are doing it but not there actual posts so I’m interested to see who is using it with success.
thanks!!

InactiveHi. I haven’t been on in forever, but Robbie still drinks goat’s milk in his nighttime bottle. It was the only answer for us, and I think more people should try it. All we did was mix the evaporated stuff and give it to him. Nothing extra!
Good luck!

InactiveHi Valerie,
My son doesn’t drink straight goat’s milk formula, but we fortify his breast milk with it (meaning, we add powdered goat’s milk to his breast milk to increase the calories). He was born premature, and had several problems afterward, so he has always needed extra calories. They sent us home from the hospital fortifying it with formula. We tried several different formulas and he just could not tolerate any of them. He would go 4 days without having a bowel movement, he would be fussy all day and have tummy cramps. Finally, in desperation, we decided to try goat’s milk powder to fortify. He was a new baby!! It did wonders – totally turned him around. He was having normal bowel movements & was finally comfortable. And by the way, our doctor didn’t have a problem with us trying goat’s milk…I think if your baby can’t tolerate formula, then there is nothing wrong with at least trying goat’s milk. It’s sure better than having a miserable baby! I’m sure it doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s certainly worth a try. I’m SO thankful we did.
Good luck with this! Keep us posted!

InactiveValerie,
We are actually on Goat’s milk with Dr. Sears instructions for a week now with Taylor. She seems to be tolerating it much better than the other formulas. I agree with you, I truly don’t care what the MDs say right now, my husband’s aunts were on it and they are fine. There were many babies on goats milk a long time ago not even with the carbohydrates added and they all ended up fine! We have been giving her the vitamin with iron but it is so constipating we are going to try it everyother day instead. Bryce’sMom is the one that actually really helped me when I was deciding on the Goat’s Milk she was a great guide and helped me and encouraged me along the way. If you want to give it a try, I felt, well she is in so much pain already why not try something new just to see since we have tried 8 other formulas in the past, she like a lab rat at this time. Good luck!

InactiveHi Valerie,
We didn’t use Goat’s milk formula. But we are on Goats milk. I wish with all my heart that I had gone with my gut and heart when Andrew was an infant. I could have saved him and myself a lot of stress. I put Andrew on Goats milk approx 7 mo. (he is now 2yr+) and the change was unbelieveable. It was the prayer Answered.
We now have a great Ped GI. Who was more than fine with my decision (which after the 1st #$@! ped GI I was expecting a fight or sixteen reasons why not) Anyway, Andrew being a little older was already on vitamin drops. So, we tested his levels and the GI adjusted his vitamin and iron drops and we have been great.
I buy it from our local store in the carton (just like reg. milk). The only thing I have noticed or would caution you about, is don’t let it get even remotely warm/hot. It seems to really spoil quickly if this happens. We live in a warm region of CA., so I just make sure in the summer or warm times that I have a cooler with ice and I haven’t had a problem since.
Go with your gut and see what happens. My thinking at this point and I like you was told more than once, plenty of kids made it just fine…. And I think there is a point to be learned by that. If you read the ingredients of Alimentum, who would you want to drink that, yuck. By the way that is was Andrew said too, just not exactly like that. More in projectile fashion. Thats when I knew something had to change and anything would be better that what we were doing with alternative formulas. (with maybe the exception of neocate, we never tried it. Our 1st ped didn’t think it was needed, ugh.)
Hang in there and Take care,
Susan

InactiveI have a friend who’s son is 3 months younger than mine and when he was born he was also diagnosed with reflux and severe allergies. That was when we had Colt on Neocate and she asked me the price of it and they could not afford it. They decided on their own to try goat’s milk and let me tell you this little boy has thrived on it. He is bigger than Colt and he is never sick. I think that there were so many babies in the past that were on goat’s milk that why not try it.

KeymasterI’m not endorsing it, but am sharing that my uncle drank it as an infant in the 1940s because he had severe excema & couldn’t tolerate anything else (hmmm…mspi/allergy anyone?)…I know nothing about it…

Inactivehave you tried neocate formula?

InactiveWe thought about switching her but the ped. said that goat’s milk or any mammilian milk would irritate the mspi and reflux. Post how the switch goes. We waited until dd was 1 and gradually switched her to soy over a 14 day period and she finally passed. I think we are going to wait until 18 months to try the goats milk. I remember how desterate we were too because the hypoallergenic formulas were never tolerated by dd. They seemed to irritate her, corn is so hard to digest. Good luck with the trial!

Inactivei gave my twins goat milk years ago. i was mostly nursing them, but when they needed a bottle it was goat milk. sometimes i was able to get it fresh from some people with goats, but most of the time i bought the powdered milk in the can—it is supposed to have the one thing(?) that goat milk is lacking in added to it.

InactiveValerie,
I don’t have any advice to share, but I just thought I let you know that I’m in the exact same boat and just tonight my husband and I were discussing trying goat’s milk for our ds. She has tried, soy, lactose free, Goodstart and Alimentum, but has refluxed on all of it. Well, not quite sure about Alimentum because she only took it for a day and then refused it entirely.
Pls keep us posted on how the goat’s milk trial goes.
Sarah

InactiveWell ladies,
Let me begin by saying THANK YOU! Thank you for your support, kind words and for sharing your experiences.
In the past 48 hours we have seen a completely different child. I feel we have just met for the very first time! I am cautiously optimistic and will reserve judgement for at least 2 weeks. However, let me share a few items with you.
I started to second guess myself till I looked up the ingredients in Nutramigen –
The following quote is verbatim and off the Mead -Johnson website:
Ingredients: Ready-To-Use: Water (87%), corn syrup solids (5%), vegetable oil (palm olein, soy, coconut, and high oleic sunflower oils) (3%), casein hydrolysate (2%), modified corn starch (2%), and less than 1%: Mortierella alpina oil*, Crypthecodinium cohnii oil†, acetylated mono-glycerides, carrageenan, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D3, vitamin E acetate, vitamin K1, thiamin hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamin B6 hydrochloride, vitamin B12, niacinamide, folic acid, calcium pantothenate, biotin, ascorbic acid, choline chloride, inositol, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, magnesium oxide, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, cupric sulfate, sodium iodide, sodium selenite, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, potassium chloride, citric acid, taurine, L-cystine, L-tyrosine, L-tryptophan, L-carnitine.
* A source of arachidonic acid (ARA)
† A source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)Water, Corn Syrup, Fat and Protein plus DHAARA and vitamins – Ladies, I can make that myself at home for much less money and additives. The recipe off the sears website is as following:
MEYENBERG EVAPORATED GOAT MILK
BEGINNING FORMULAEvaporated Goat Milk
12 oz.Water
24 oz.Rice Syrup
5 Tbsp.Calories (per oz.)
20As baby matures during its first year, gradually increase ratio of powder to water until whole milk level is reached (see below). Discontinue adding rice syrup (carbohydrates).
To reconstitute to Whole Milk
Evaporated Goat Milk
12 ozWater
12 oz.Calories (per oz.)
19NOTE:
Any time goat milk is the sole source of nutrition, we recommend the feeding of a vitamin supplement.
Alternative carbohydrates include corn syrup and simple table sugar.
Table Sugar = 48 calories per Tbsp.
Corn Syrup = 60 calories per Tbsp.
Rice Syrup = 42 calories per Tbsp.I can even buy, from Baby’s Only ORganics – DHA ARA in powdered form to add to her formula and am giving her Poly vi Sol daily for vitamins.
What is really the difference? I have heard that the specialtyhypoallergenic formulas are so foul smelling and tasting….so engineered…. Well, why not try something nutritionally the SAME but natural and palatable?
I guess I’m just talking more to myself and justifying why we are doing this. I see no reason to spend that kind of money on chemicals when I can spend 1/2 the money on a quality, organic product where I control the ingredients!
All I can say is – so far, so good. We are also adding rice cereal to her bottles because she is used to that – about a tsp. per ounce. I commit to giving you regular progress reports just in case our experience may help someone else who is suffering. I also plan to tell our ped. and GI what we are doing and if they dont’ like it then too bad.
At some point, we as parents, have to take all the info available to us, do our own research, consider our child and what he or she needs and then make informed decisions – not just blindly follow what some Dr. says. Please don’t take that the wrong way – we are still taking the prevacid, mylanta and following dr.s orders…. but in my gut I think this is what is best for us.
I can only tell you that this is currently working for us. Yesterday, for the first time in her short little life – she cried for only 20 minutes…. TWENTY MINUTES! Let’s pray it continues….
I’ll keep you posted. Thank you again and please – if you have any GOAT stories to tell or experiences then please – keep ’em comin!

That is awesome news, keep us posted, I’ll be curious to hear how she does over the next few weeks. What is it in goat’s milk that doesn’t cause allergic reactions/gas/abdominal pain? RLM4262006-10-5 9:29:7October 5, 2006 at 10:00 am #14996Anonymous
InactiveYippee!! I hope she continues to do well on the goat’s milk! Please keep us updated!

InactiveI am interested in seeing how she does. We actually raised goats when I was a kid so, of course, I drank goats milk. We sold our farm when I was 14. I was on my first antibiotic at 15 and ended up having sinus surgery last year because I had so many sinus infections. It is kind of interesting that I was NEVER sick as a kid and sick all the time after we moved to town and drank only cows milk.
