InactiveOne more question, I am using the dosing calculator and it says she should be getting 4 to 5 mg of Zegerid 3 times a day. How much of the Mylanta/Zegerid solution is that?

InactiveI figured it out. 🙂 It just took awhile for my mommy brain to do math…ha!

InactiveTracy, Kensley is beautiful! Sorry to hear that your battling reflux again, but hopefully things will be easier the second time around. Congratulations on your little girl!

InactiveMylanta and Tums are “supposed” to baby MSPI friendly but some LOs still react. Too much mylanta causes loose stools and upset tummies and some babies didn’t like the Tums either. Hit or miss I guess!
Here are the directions from Dr. Phillips:Zegerid 40mg packets, add 6.5mL tap water to 1 packet. This will make 10mL (40mg in 10mL), Do this in an oral dosing syringe (20mL size syringe preferred).
The add 10mL Mylanta Cherry Supreme to the syringe. Now you will have 20mL total volume and 40mg omeprazole. (2mg omeprazole per each mL)
This is stable in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. Shake before each dose. You can put the dose in the bottle of milk. Depends on age and weight. Must use at least 3.5mL per dose, three doses per day or don’t waste your time. Alternatively, use a Tums QuikPack in place of the Mylanta Cherry Supreme – then add enough water to make 20mL total volume.February 21, 2010 at 3:56 pm #65858hellbennt

InactiveTracy… just to add onto what Amy was saying re: some babies not doing well w/ Mylanta, etc…. Tate didn’t do well w/ the Mylanta as the buffer. We had to switch to Tums Quick Paks & he’s doing MUCH better w/ that. Glad you got the Zegerid & are seeing improvement!!
Amy… I’m glad you warned me about the extra gas in the 1st few days/week of starting on the PPI as I think Tate has definitely had that! His diapers have been ‘normal’ so I’m fairly confident he’s tolerating the Zegerid + Tums & I think today he’s had significantly less gas so hopefully his body is finally adjusting (he’s on day 5 of it). Fingers crossed! Thanks so much!

InactiveI am going to try the tums tonight. She had loose stools this morning (more so than normal) so maybe that is from the mylanta. Thank you for the info! 🙂 She has had awful gas too…hoping that clears up soon like Tate! Glad he is feeling better!

InactiveWell, I emailed David Stock re: corn-free buffer babies as I’m just stumped w/ Tate. He is just miserable sometimes & I honestly can’t tell if it’s reflux related or tummy/intestinal pain. His diapers are fairly normal most of the time & he’s on his marci-kids dose of Zegerid (for a week now) so I just don’t know. It just seems like it’s tummy pain though & since I’ve kept my diet regular since starting Zegerid w/ Tums I’m thinking it might be the Tums :(. I’m considering taking him off it & just doing Axid for a few days to see his reaction (ie: more uncomfortable=is actually IS reflux pain, more comfy=it WAS tummy pain). Ugh… I thought this would be easier this time but it’s just as frustrating (well, not nearly since I have the diet thing under control but it seems just as frustrating!).
P.S. I haven’t heard back from David yet (re; corn-free BB)… & I also never heard back from his 2 wks ago when I emailed him re: Zegerid. Hmmm…

InactiveWell, I think I’m going to stick w/ the Zegerid w/ Tums through the weekend to try & give the PPI the 2 wks… any thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated. (p.s. – sorry Tracy for hijacking your post).

InactiveOh man ErinI’m sorry you’re thinking it might not work with zegerid/tums!! A few moms on the other reflux boarrd are starting to use this hypoallergenic calcium carbonate to mix with zegerid. Here’s a link to it. I don’t know how you mix it…but you can ask Dr. Phillips. I tried to find an old thread talking about it and I wasn’t able to. Hang in there you’re doing GREAT!!!

InactiveErin, I hope Tate gets better soon! I would email Dr. Phillips and ask him if there is anything else that you can do. Addy (my 1st refluxer) started Zegerid around 6 months old and the regular dosing did not work for her either. I emailed Dr. Phillips to ask for advice and he told me what to do with regards to upping her dosage and using the 20 mg packets without the additional buffer (tums or mylanta). It worked for her…she just needed a higher dosage than most babies.
I started the Tums today with Kensley…crossing my fingers for a good night tonight. The past few nights have been terrible!

InactiveOh, and no worries about hijacking. 🙂 We’ve started our own little convo and I’m learning/remembering a ton. I don’t have the time to search the boards right now while trying to pump, take care of Kensley and chase/entertain a 4 year old, so this thread is helping me a lot!

InactiveSo, I guess I was wrong about her reflux improving. 🙁 Its been awful the past 2 days! And, I think she might be aspirating which makes me so nervous. She is on 4 ml three times a day and we are using the tums because her stools were so so loose on the Mylanta. But, they are still very loose. What to do! We are on day 5 (since I have been mixing it correctly). Any advice? Should I stick it out with the Zegerid and see?
