InactiveI never heard of a potato allergy either, but if someone in your family used to get eczema from potatoes, than I’d drop the potatoes for a while and see what happens. I’ve heard people say no one’s ever allergic to apples but there are two babies on the board who are allergic to apples, so I guess when it comes to allergies anything is possible.
Also, I forgot to mention the soaps that Laura commented on. I started using only free and clear laundry soaps, no softner, and Dove Unscented bar soap for bathing and that helped alot. If it is eczema there can be multiple triggers. For my babies it was dairy and soaps.

InactiveBrianna got a really bad rash from something…to this day I am still not sure what it was, but the Aveeno Baby lotion, with the dark blue cap (sorry I can’t remember exactly what it was called, but it said something about babies with exema on the tube) worked wonders for us in clearing it up.

InactiveKaelyn’s eczema looked very similar to hers. In our case it was the build up of milk and wheat proteins in her system that caused a rash that gradually worsened to that point. Since hers was so sudden, I’d think that it’s either the sudden increase in potatoes in your diet or the Hep B shot. Although, if it was the Hep B shot, I would think she’d be getting better by now. Hmmmm….

InactiveI have to say that the appearance of that rash looks a lot more like an allergy induced rash then excema, but that’s just from what I’ve seen. I once had a reaction to amoxicillin that looked a lot like that- hive-like. Did your doctor say why he thought it wasn’t a vaccine-induced reaction? That would have been my first guess also. I don’t know much about how old you have to be to give Benadryl, but I believe Ann Marie (monty123) had to give it to Dylan at a fairly young age. I wouldn’t go against your doc, but she knows a fair bit about the topic, so you could always pm her if you need more information. If it doesn’t improve, then I’d get it checked out again. Good luck.

InactiveI agree about the HEP B. My doc thought it was the zantac…I don’t think it would do that 2 weeks later, also, it could be a build up of the milk and wheat. It has been 3 days since I have cut out all dairy. It is still there today. Hopefully it is gone by tomorrow, if not my doc wants to take her off of the zantac to see if it clears up, I CAN’T do that, she is miserable without the zantac…

InactiveMaybe it could be the zantac after it’s built up in the system awhile? I don’t know much about allergies so just asking really.

Keymasterthings to try:
change from zantac to pepsid, tagament or axid
ask for a PPI!
continue on pepsid, tagament or axid for 2 weeks when starting PPI
if rash clears up from switching from zantac then you know it was the zantac
otherwise, try TED

InactiveThe GI is waiting to start PPI until after two weeks of the elimination diet. So, I have cut back the Zantac and we’ll see if that helps until then.

InactiveIf you do decide to try the benadyryl, my son has had to have it since he was 6 weeks old per his Doctors orders becuase he has to have blood transfusions. His pediatric hematologist/oncologist said to give him 1/4 of the suggested dose at first to make sure that he is not allergic to it. Then, when it is time for his next dose increase it by another 1/4 and so on and so on.
He has never had a reaction to it, but it does make him very sleepy.

InactiveI am a celiac (intolerant to wheat oats barley and rye) and used to get rashes like that prior to diagnosis. Try eliminating these grains from your diet or formula (my Johnny is doing great on elecare) and use Cetaphil gentle cleanser and lotion and perfume and dye free detergent on anything that touches your baby. I hope this helps! You’re little sweetie is GORGEOUS!!!!

InactiveThanks! I stopped the zantac for 3 days, no rash and reintroduced it because she was miserable. No rash. I SWEAR she got that rash from the HIB shot. I have noticed bumps here and there. I am on a dairy free diet until tuesday and then the GI will recheck for blood in stool and later that day we are having skin tests for allergies, I think potatoes is a big one for her and possibly oatmeal…how often do you have to increase the zantac for wieght? How do you weigh your baby inbetween visits? We are fussy again…ugh!

InactiveAs a mom of a kid with celiac….that rash and the fact you are eating alot of wheat….send off HUGE alarms. I think alot of people dont realize that wheat (and oats, barley, rye) can do tons of damage to the body, as soy and milk can. The rash totally looks like noahs old rash and not like Audreys excema. and also bloody stool can show wheat issues…
I would cut out the wheat and see what happens.
I know vax’s can do horrible things also, but if she still has it and its been a few days then I wouldnt think its the vax, plus while I know drs can be dumb…it would be horrid of him to have seen the rash and dismiss the HIb link if there was a chance….
I would cut out the wheat.

InactiveShe has an allergy appointment tomorrow and wheat is one of the things, along with oatmeal, I am checking for. The rash is gone, but after cutting dairy for two weeks, if blood is still in her stool tomorrow, I am going to think wheat and/or the oatmeal is the culprit. Thanks for your replies and I will let you know what I find out.
