InactiveI’m new here, but have been browsing this site for support since my son was born. He has suffered from silent reflux since birth. He has been on Zantac and prevacid with no improvement. Prevacid gave him stomach cramps. He has all the symptoms and my primAry concern is his sleep. He is a catnapper and his nights are terrible, at 10 months he gets up every hour and when he sleeps he groans, squirms, cries, tosses and turns. He has had stool tests, rast testing which show no allergies. He has been on nutramigen since 4 months old after my milk dried up because I had lost so much weight on the total elimination diet whch didn’t help. He is currently on Zantac, but it isn’t helping at all. In fact he has been progressively getting worse, especially since starting solids. I had enough and after much thought and hesitation asked for an endoscopy convinced it would show severe inflammation from months of uncontrolled reflux. Guess what? Biopsy and pictures show no allergies and not even mild irritation.. The doctor says he sees no evidence of him suffering from acid reflux. Can he still be experiencing pain if results show no inflammation? The dr doesnt even want to put him on a ppi because there is no damage so there is essentially nothing that has to be healed. I’m at a loss. What is going on? He says If he is experiencing reflux the results indicate the episodes shouldn’t cause him pain, if it did there would be inflammation; an indication that acid is affecting his esophagus but that’s not the case. He has no allergies as reflected by his stool and rast testing. Any ideas?

Keymasterhugs. Consider intolerances?
have you had a chance to read about them?February 21, 2011 at 12:23 pm #67877Anonymous
InactiveIntolerances? How would I test for that? I went on a Ted while I was breastfeeding with no improvement? What about your thoughts on clear scope? Does that rule out painful reflux? Would you put your LO on a PPI if their scope showed no damage not even mild irritation? Thanks for your reply

KeymasterI would research all you can about intolerances…
also look in to probiotics…‘main‘ MSPI pageprobiotics, brands used:Sheri’s allergy/intolerance explanation: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10223&PID=87638#87638
Another Sheri explanation- intolerance/allergy post:

InactiveThe dr. Did stool testing and scope allergy testing and he is clear for mspi allergies. I have had him on a probiotic since birth. I also eliminated all soy and milk proteins when I was breast feeding for four months with no improvement. I was eating basically turkey, squash, and rice. Is there hope that he will outgrow this by a year? Was your LO suffering up until he outgrew it? If he does outrow kit will it be a sudden difference one day or gradual? Sorry I’m just so hopeless aftter 10 months of this.

Keymasterthere’s a difference b/t allergies and intolerances (links above), so if dr ruled out allergies, it does not mean there aren’t any intolerances.
are you feeding rice cereal? could be that? I mention it bcse you were ‘down’ to just turkey squash & rice w/o any improvement, so maybe it’s rice?did the nutrimigen help?February 21, 2011 at 2:04 pm #67881Anonymous
InactiveNo, I’m feeding him oatmeal cereal, but not too much else. He willingly eats I , but I notice more nightwakings and crying out. I agave him butternut squash and he lived it. However, he seemed to suffer more at night. I’ve tried carrots, parsnips, pears. I feel like everything bothers him. He needs to eat. He does okay with the nutramigen I guess. We tried alimentum. He poops better on nutramigen. Laura, can you help me out with the whole scopoe ordeal. If you knew there was absolutely no damage or irritation from the reflux would you give a ppi? The dr. Doesn’t see the point because there is no damage that needs to be healed. Ugghhh when will this end?

KeymasterI think I’d try diet…??? so hard to tell.
is there anything that does not bother him?is there ‘hidden’ milk protein in the oatmeal?February 21, 2011 at 5:35 pm #67884Anonymous
InactiveIt’s beechnut brand so no. It seems like solids in general upset him. Reflux is definitely the issue. It’s just what is causing this and should I medicate without signs of inflammation or irritation.

Inactivedo you see a difference when he is on a ppi? If u feel that it makes him more comfortable then I would give it to him if u don’t see that it helps than why bother with it?? Do what YOU feel is best for your child.

InactiveWell I used it for a month when he was 3 months old and it didn’t seem to help. He was on 15 mg of prevacid. I wish I knew for certain he would outgrow this by 12 months. Then I would hold on and do without the ppi seeing that there is no damage. However, he is not improving which tells me this may be a lingering issue. I hope not. Has anyone experienced a flare around this age and then complete resolution of symptoms by 12 months? Can it be that sudden?

KeymasterI really would focus on diet. If you see improvement via diet, then you’ll know that meds aren’t necessary.
I can’t tell you that he’ll outgrow it by 12 months, especially when diet seems to be the issue. at 10 months IF he was eating like a champ and not in pain then yes, I’d say there might be a chance that it will all magically disappear at 12 months.can you tell us about gas?stools?rashes?what do YOU feel?February 22, 2011 at 7:26 pm #67902Anonymous
InactiveCan you help me with diet? What foods are safe? He eats willingly. I just notice night times are worse with food. I tried butternut squash but his nights were terrible. Same with carrots. When you say chunks of food do you mean steamed and cut up like carrots? I steamed and cut p carrots the other day and it came out in his stools the same way; in the same pieces. Can you help me with diet? If I do chunks how muchbdo I give him. What should a 10 month olds feeding schedule look like? He has always had a lot of gas. Stools usually every other day and it’s a good consistency? He only gets what appears to be an allergy ring around his anus. No other rashes. I feel like this will never get better. I feel like he is uncomfortable and I feel hopeless that at this age he is not eating solids like he should. He loves them. Should I just feed them to him and hope his body adjusts? I feel like everything bothers his little tummy, but if I cntinue at this rate he will never eat. I mean everything makes things worse.

Keymasterok I would start on probiotics and go from there.
I might even add in digestive enzymes, too, lol.but slowly. first try probiotics?as for food and chunks, I mean big fist-sized chunks (his fist). let him gnaw on a big chunk of ripe banana? or steamed or baked sweet potato?I did this w/ ds2, at 7 months, because he wouldn’t eat any purees and I was desperate (he was very low weight)…when you say he doesn’t do well at night- is this from breakfast or lunch or dinner? can you tell? I would start w/ just giving solids in the morning and see how that night goes…then go from there.how is barley cereal?is there ANY food that is ‘safe?’ -
