InactiveI’ve been giving him probiotics since birth bc he was given 48 hrs of antibiotics bc I had a fever during labor. Sucks. As for digestive enzymes I bought them but for some reason am afraid to use them. Are they ok? I saw a post from Sheri who said s. Boulardii really helped her LO. Know anything about that? It seems like when he takes in food either his naps suffer or nights are terrible. To be honest his nights are terrible regardless. He squirms and tosses and turns all night. Even though the scope shows no damage I’m so close to demanding a pPI. The drs. Make me feel like I’m some crazy mother because the tests they have done don’t ‘warrant’ the need for meds. I usually give him oatmeal around 11ish and the. Again at dinner time around 5 paired with a veggie, but I havent found a veggie he does great with. should I give oatmeal in the am and then just a veggie at lunch? I know fruit is a big no no for him. Are green beans safe for reflux babies? How about zucchini? Any other gentle foods I can start with? Thank you so much for your help.

KeymasterAre the probiotics free of milk? I would check that.I would give ‘main’ meal at breakfast, giving him all day to digest it. do this for a few days and see if sleep improves. start w/ something you know digests well…I totally trust all Sheri posts about, lol. Seriously, though, you can always try & then stop if things get too weird. but one thing at a time.food first: give main meal in a.m. and maybe just cereal for lunch & dinner (if cereal is ‘safe’ – you didn’t really answer if there’s anything you’ve found to be ok w/ him). Or, better yet, don’t even give lunch and dinner and see how breakfast ‘sits?’one meal at a time, one food at a time, slowly slowly…safe is all trial & error. so I’d go for avocado, squash (all kinds), and he’s 10 months so some free-range/hormone free/antibiotic free ground turkey and/or lamb…but after I found a veggie that was ‘safe?” proteins are harder to digest, but those two (ground turkey and lamb) are very gentle on the digestive track, especially w/o added ‘stuff.’I would make all your own food, at least to begin? steam squash & puree it, and experiment w/ consistancies…same goes for avocado- try various thicknesses…green beans can be safe- everything can be. it’s a lot of trial and error. pears (steam them yourself) are mild…February 23, 2011 at 10:12 am #67907Anonymous
InactiveI have been using a hypoallergenic probiotic, yes. So far he reacts the least to oatmeal. I think it’s a safe food for him. I’m going to try zucchini today and then sweet potato after three days of this trial. Thank you so much for your help. Even though his scope came out clear, I’m going to try prevacid. He is so uncomfortable at nights. I just don’t understand. If the scope showed no damage, I would assume acid isn’t being refluxed. That it is non- acidic reflux and that’s causing nasal congestion as well. So if it’s non-acidic, then how would a PPI help if what it does is shut down acid production? I don’t want to medicate him if it isn’t warranted. This is so frustrating. I HATE reflux!!!!! Can you share your story on how your LO outgrew reflux? Was it gradual improvements you saw? Did it just happen overnight? How was he with solids? And when were his peaks?

Keymasterdoes mylanta calm him down? have you tried it at night?
for my son: he did not have reflux along w/ MSPI or any other intolerances, thank goodness. He got properly medicated and at one point we noticed that we didn’t need to increase his meds w/ every little weight gain. it just got better from there. by 12 months we had him off of prevacid, but still gave him zantac, tums & mylanta as needed. He was basically ok by 15 months (he was walking by then & drinking whole milk)…he still needed a very occasional tums or some mylanta at night here and there, probably until he was 3 or even 4 years old, but this was RARE- just when he was getting sick or something.vaccinations affected his reflux, as did getting sick. those were the peaks I’d say. Teething also made things worse.February 23, 2011 at 8:23 pm #67917Anonymous
InactiveMylanta? I couldn’t get through the nights without it. Only thing that calms him. Why? If he has no irritation, why does he need this or meds? I have to convince my husband that just bc the scope is clear doesn’t mean he isn’t experiencing pain. If you could see my son at night it would break ur heart. Crying out. Squirming and tossing every 5 minutes. I want to scream at the drs who say his scope is clear this kid doesn’t even have reflux and they look at me like I’m crazy. I can’t tell you what a lonely feeling that is. And the specialist: ” so you’re telling me ur son has never vomited or spit up? So why on earth would you think he has reflux?”. Am I living in the twilight zone?
Interesting note: my mil said my husband was like this until she switched him over to cows milk at 6 months. That early bc they were very poor and couldn’t afford formula. The dr. Approved. Why would that make him better? I wonder if my son will be the same way. Hmmmm..

InactiveAt what age did Ari outgrow reflux??
February 24, 2011 at 9:48 am #67923Anonymous
InactiveIm not sure if this was mentioned, but if your doctor wont prescribe a ppi, you can always take it into your own hands and use a ppi over the counter. Thats what I am doing with my 2month old daughter, we are using caracream with the otc meds. Its worth a try and you wont hurt your baby by doing it either. If you know its reflux and no one will help its perfectly fine to take it on yourself.

InactiveI also wanted to mention, my daughter seemed very fussy and cranky on Nutramigen. She was on it for almost 2 months. I recenly switched her back to soy formula and she is doing much better. I think Nutramigen makes some babies very gassy and may make reflux worse. She is less cranky and fussy on soy, even after only half a day of being back on it. I would request an upper GI if you havent already, but KNOW that IF it comes back neg. does not mean no reflux, just means they didnt catch it in the works.

KeymasterJonah was med free at 12 months.
outgrew reflux by 15 month/18months: by this time it was RARE to have to give tums/mylanta or even zantac.Ari thank goodness never had reflux!Jonah’s was not diet-related, it sounds like your baby’s just might be.the excema & the symptoms…February 25, 2011 at 8:38 am #67935Anonymous
InactiveMy baby has no exzema. In fact he has no rashes. I don’t think it’s diet related because when I breastfed for 3 months I was on the TED with absolutely no improvement. The biggest issue is sleeping. Very disturbed; very restless. Even though scope came out clear and drs. Say it shouldn’t cause him pain I decided to put him on prevacid bc I couldnt stand to see him squirming, crying and uncomfortable all night; every hour. I put hiim on it three days ago. Last night he slept from 8 to 4 am. Then bottle then up at 7. He still tossed and turned a little but no crying out or screaming. So as far as him not being in pain just bc scope came out clear is a load of bull. I hope I can take him off it at 12 months. 2 months from now. I absolutely hate having him on meds, but you know what I spent thousands on natural doctors, chiropractors, chinese herbalists, with no improvement. So I guess I have no choice if I want to see my little man comfortable. Thanks laura! I wish people would post more about Outgrowing reflux. That’s what we all need, hope! Bc his doesn’t seem diet related I wonder if 12 months he will be better. Hmmmmmm

InactiveWhen Jonah was on meds was he pain free? Did it resolve all symptoms? How was his sleep? Also, is it true that being on prevacid lowers immunity? Im delaying vaccines bc it makes everything a thousand times worse with his reflux. I’m going away with my mother in law to her condo in florida and he has to be on a plane. Hubbub. O hope he doesnt catch anything. I didn’t want to go, but my in laws really want him to go. Anyway, sorry for all the questions.

Keymasterthe only reason I keep coming back to diet/intolerance is: poop- at this point shouldn’t it be every day? I truly don’t know, though…and, also the terrible sleep. for many, the horrible sleep was the only indication of diet-related issues…
I don’t know much about hiatal hernias, but I wonder if this would be something? I only mention it bcse two babies here have had this- but they also had reflux- so I don’t know much about clear scope & hiatal hernia? hmm…one baby had success w/ aloe vera, but I don’t know at what age she started w/ that? here you go- scroll down to my purple post & read the one below it, posted by Anne:also: maybe it’s RICE? there have been mamas who do the TED & itwinds up that the baby is intolerant to rice (one of the main staples of the TED)…oh & you had questions, lol!medicine helped jonah. he was Sir No Nap, though. He did sleep at night, but most likely just so tired from the day? and we did not delay vaccines, although he did react to them- his reflux was bad for about 4 days afterwards…and prevacid lowering immunity? I’ve never heard of that? I don’t think this was true at all for Jonah. he did have ear infections, but I attribute that to the reflux getting up in there…he wasn’t the type of baby to get sick all the time or anything (he’s very healthy now at age 7.5! knock on wood!)hellbennt2011-02-26 12:04:32

InactiveNo hiatal hernias. Drs checked for that via scope. He has been on aloe Vera. We took him o a chiropractor wtho recommended that. We tried for a month with no improvement. I did take rice out during Ted for a week or two and again no change. This is all so frustrating. Clear scope but prevacid is helping. I guess it’s a valve thing. He is on such a limited diet now I can’t see how it’s diet related. Maybe the nutramigen is bothering him. In two months I’m going to try goats milks as he will be a year old. Maybe that will help. I’ve had him only on nutramigen with no solids at one point w no change. And I breasted for four months on Ted with no change. At one point I was eating only potatoes and turkey. Terrible. So I take that to mean it’s more of a immature valve/ digestive tract thing. I’ve heard of babies getting dramatically better at 12 months out of nowhere and that’s what I hope with ds. Thanks again for getting back to me. If it wasnt for u i don’t think I’d be getting any responses on this board.

Inactivesylvia had a good size hiatal hernia that did not show up on a scope or on two barium swalllows, either. but, she had severe reflux and her esophagus was getting ulcerated. she was also failure to thrive. she had a fundo just before she turned 10 months old, and that is when they discovered the hiatal hernia.
i’ve had reflux for about 20 years now. i’ve suspected for years that i had a hiatal hernia, and it was just barely confirmed because i got a look at the surgery report from my scope that was done LAST YEAR. the surgeon never even mentionede to me that i had a hernia.i always ask for a copy of all bloodwork i have done and i ask for a copy of the surgery report when i have a surgical procedure done.when i had my scope done this year, i saw the word eosinophils and said, “those are allergic cells’—and the surgeon said, “you probably know more about that than me.” he didn’t even pay attention to it it, but if you read the report at the bottom, it told how many eosinophils i had per hig power high powered lens—-which was significant. it also said that eosinophilic esophagitis could not be ruled out.basically, i need to see a GI and then i need to see the allergist and have food allergy testing done to see what i am allergic to that is causing this condition. i really don’t want to keep having my esophagus dilated (3 times in 4 years) i have discovered you need to ask every question you can think of and then ask even more—and you need to do your homework because most doctors just don’t give out enough information.my hiatal hernia was mentioned in the doctor’s notes about the surgery, which i had not asked for, i had only asked for a copy of the pathology report. -
