InactiveDon’t worry, Therese. It never entered my mind that you might be a “big meanie.” I get overwhelmed sometimes with all the expectations too. Everytime you turn around it’s some holiday or event or appreciation day, and besides the expense there’s the effort that goes into finding a gift, wrapping it, delivering it etc. And one day I’ll have three in school! Uggg…
I think that’s nice that you visit with the teachers. I do that a lot too. I think they appreciate it but I wonder sometimes if they think I’m a pest.

InactiveAs a teacher, I love any type of gift that shows appreciation for my hard work. Really, anything makes my day! I work so hard and most of the time, parents don’t ever thank me.
One mother asked me what I would like for lunch one day. She picked up lunch for me from Applebee’s and brought it to me. It was one of the nicest teacher appreciation week gifts I have ever received!

InactiveTherese, I never thought your comments mean either……

InactiveI second what the others said, Therese. It’s nice to hear different thoughts on things!
For some reason teacher gifts don’t bother me as much as the neverending slew of birthday presents during the year, and the expectation to buy a gift over $20 each time. It just seems constant. I buy a lot of gifts in advance when they’re on sale, but then feel guilty that I got it cheap, and feel the need to top it up to something closer to 20 dollars.

InactiveTherese, your comments didn’t offend me at all. As others have said, I prefer when it’s something that means something from the child, or something that I know is coming because the child really appreciates me. I now work in a school where more than 70% of the kids live below the poverty level, so I don’t get many “traditional” gifts, but I get so much more emotionally from the kids on a daily basis that it really doesn’t matter. I used to work in a school that sent home a letter suggesting different gifts for every day of teacher appreciation week. So, for example, Monday was “bring your teacher a flower” day. It was kind of sweet to have 24 kids bring you flowers, but it’s much more meaningful when just one chooses to bring one in “just because”.

InactiveTherese, a visiting daddy, too! That’s great!

On the topic of teacher gifts…. I couldn’t sleep last night (kids are all sick) and I came up with an idea. I know at least one of Liza’s teachers does Scrapbooking (and I’m pretty sure the other one does too
), so I am going to make each of them a scrapbook page on 8.5 X 11 inch paper so they can either frame it or mount it onto a bigger page in one of their own scrapbooks. It will have some cute general sayings (which I haven’t thought of yet
) about teachers, a few special observations about each of them, and a picture of Liza and maybe her handprint and or a little picture or something that she can make for them. And I am going to include a gift certificate from Creative Memories, not much…maybe $10 each. What do you all think? Now I just have to find the time to do it!! Yikes, I only have 10 days to get it done! I better start working on it.

InactiveGood idea, Christine. I just got back from a birthday party and someone suggested that we all put in ten dollars for each teacher and get a big gift certificate. There’s 12 kids leaving, so that should be something nice for each of them. It also works out well for me, b/c otherwise I would have ended up spending at least 20 dollars each.
