InactiveHmmm…I often wonder why, too. But it’s pretty common here to give teachers gifts for Christmas and for the end of the school year, to show your appreciation. We even have Teacher’s Day which I forget about every single year.

InactiveThanks for the ideas and links everyone. Therese, it is quite the norm here to give gifts. In fact, DS’s preschool sent home a note to remind the parents it is teacher appreciation week and to be sure to acknowledge your child’s teacher and it is also posted on the door!

Lori, I tend to spend $5-$15 per teacher. I don’t know what the average is but they always seem happy with whatever they get. I try to compensate at other times too like birthdays and such instead of just during appreciation week.

InactiveHere’s what I decided to do: I bought each teacher a Yankee candle and am attaching labels with a ribbon that are going to say ‘Dear Ms. Teacher, You ‘brighten’ my days with your………. (customized for each teacher, like one is good with music and the other is good at hugs and affection) Thanks for being a great teacher. Love, Seth”. Does this sound ok??? I actually stole this idea off of a wedding favor site….

InactiveAs an elementary teacher, a smile and a kind thank you would be appreciated. Problem was, I never saw the parents. But that’s neither here nor there. I always appreciated gift cards. Since my district stunk, I tended to use it to buy things needed for my classroom. The thing I liked the best though was something the kids made. A card, a picture, or little project. I know I won’t save it forever, but it means much more coming from the child.

InactiveI’m with you Therese on the we all get paid should we get special recognition. But, then I realize that I am really thankful that someone took special care of Owen when he was so sick and listend to all my demands and gave me hugs and told me it was going to be okay when all I could do was cry! I have nothing bad to say about my providers!
ANYWAY, for teacher appreciation day, my children’s daycare takes up a collection from all the parents and it is of course not mandatory, then the director puts on a special day for the providers and they get lunch and a special gift. I guess I’ve never stopped to ask what the gift is…..
Another nice thing my daycare does is each teacher has a “favorites” page and they are all kept in a binder and I have asked for a copy of each teachers. On birthdays, etc, I usually get them something off of their list. They are quite detailed from their favorite color to what kind of popcorn, coffee, pop, candy, cookies they like to what places they would like certificates from.
It makes it very easy to pick something that I know for sure that they will like and I can control the price!!

InactiveTiffany,
What is a Yankee Candle?
Kathy,
That amazes me that you never saw the parents. I think Liza’s teachers must get tired of me. I call all the time and I hang around and ask questions constantly.

InactiveI give for the Christmas holidays and then again at the end of the year. Not always something big, but just to say thank you. If the teacher was crummy, then I wouldn’t be as apt to do it, but if I’ve been happy and appreciative of the way they’ve taken care of my child, then I enjoy doing it. The workers at our day care don’t get paid as much as they probably should- I just remember the day that Hailey blew poop all over the classroom
. I see the love they show my kids every day and I want to tell them that I appreciate it, just because I want to. Not everybody gives the teachers something here, so I think that if you want to them you should, if not then you don’t have to. I guess it’s one of those things like Valentine’s day… it’s just an arbitrary day, but I sure do get mad when I’m not acknowledged. I want the teachers to know that I know how hard they work.May 10, 2007 at 11:16 am #32807Anonymous

Yankee Candles is a chain. Our mall has a Yankee candle store and it’s all candles, car smelly things, etc. It about knocks you out walking in there. You can also find them in Hallmark stores, drugstores, etc.
They are a little more pricey I would say than the average smelly candle that you get at Target, but they last awhile and they have hundreds of flavors…..

InactiveThanks, Erica!

Tiffany, I like your idea; the candle and the label attached with a special sentiment. Maybe I’ll do that this year. How are you going to make the little label? (I’m clueless when it comes to creativity).

InactiveHere’s a funny thing to appreciate about teachers. Liza’s had a little cold so she gets a frog in her throat and she has no idea how to clear it and her voice gets raspy.
Well yesterday on the way home from pre-school she said, “Mommy, Mrs. M taught me something very important today.” I asked her what it was and she said, “She taught me how to go Ah-HEM, Ah-HEM Wasn’t that nice of her, mommy?”

So, that’s what I should put on Mrs. M’s present, Thank you for being a nice teacher and for teaching me to go Ah-HEM!

Inactivethat is funny Christine!!
For the label, I printed the message on cardstock paper (you could also write, I just have terrible handwriting) and then I will cut it out with my scrapbook scissors that have the decorative edges, poke a hole in it and attach it to the candle with a ribbon. That’s about as creative as I get!! I guess if you wanted to get fancy, you could use scrapbook paper and do several colors, stickers, etc. for the label. I don’t mind at all getting his teachers little gifts. I think they more than deserve it. I know they are underpaid (I do the daycare’s books!).. and I think giftcards are awesome I just wanted to get something different this time since I just gave one of the teachers a gift card for both her b-day and as a wedding gift (and for Christmas!)… I also liked the popcron idea and the general idea ot get something for the whole center since so many help out but was just running out of time!!

InactiveThanks, Tiffany. I’ll give it a try. I have plenty of scrapbooking supplies so I should be able to make a nice label.

InactiveSorry if I offended anyone, particularly you hardworking teachers/childcare workers.
. You all have some wonderful ideas re presents etc. Sometimes I just get overwhelmed by all the expectations (not of the teachers and workers of course) just the world
. Just so you all know i’m not just a big meanie
Everyday when I drop and pick Alana up from daycare I spend at least 10 mins there talking to the workers and at the end of the day I always thank them and get Alana to thank them (well in her own special way
). I am hoping to teach her the value of spending time with people and the importance of thanking people for their effort. I might just get Alana to make some homemade cards (with a bit of help from mum) and do the Thankyou for being…… when it comes to xmas and the like. -
