InactiveYeah, my kids all get runny noses & fevers when they are teething. It’s hard to know sometimes if they’re sick or teething.

About the nose sucker….I don’t know if this is true or not but my dh swears that it hurts their ears when you suck their noses out with it. All of my kids hate it and I realized (finally according to dh) that it doesn’t help all that much anyway, so I don’t use them anymore. When they have a cold or URI, no matter how much you suck out their nose it just fills up again anyway.
our ped says to just squirt/spray saline & let gravity do it’s thing
(no need to suction)…sraying helps clear out everything- is really good at clearing out the ears tooNovember 16, 2006 at 11:48 pm #18210Anonymous
InactiveLori, i actually think you are right abotu the mg.
i believe dr phillips said there was an error in the dosing calculator for the 20 mg packs-so you actually go by the dosing for the 40-mg packs, but yes the dose should be the same regardless if you are using the 40 mg or 20 mg.
amy-i would email dr phillips about that, he created it so he will know.
Trace started out at 30 mg just like your daughter, but now he is up to 42 mg.November 17, 2006 at 11:10 am #18235Anonymous
InactiveBack to the nose sucker outter a moment (we do what Laura does but…) when you suck out it makes them lose their breath few a moment which is I’d imagine is scarey for a LO. Perhaps that is why they dislike it?
I think that may be why they don’t like any wiping, picking, rubbing their nose – they are nose breathers til they get older – perhaps its a built in protection mechanism for them to turn away from and dislike anything going in or on their lil noseys.

I think the saline spray Lil Noses is fantastic, and also as said humidifiers are awesome so long as you keep them clean.
Teething is the pits, we increase the Zegerid by 2mg when it’s really bad. Our GI says no motrin b/c it’s too rough on the tummy, so we stick with Tylenol and Hylands unless its very bad. We have 8 teeth here at 10m!
Good Luck!

InactiveThat makes sense….babies are nose breathers for quite some time after birth.
Another possible reason why they hate the nose sucker is that you have to hold their head still in order to use it. A pediatrician once told me that babies hate to have their heads held still because it’s their head that they learn to control first (muscle wise). For this reason many good and experienced doctors will examine a baby from the neck down first, and then move up to the head to check ears/eyes/nose etc. This way the baby doesn’t get upset early on in the examination.
