InactiveAfter chatting with Dr P about my LO and prevacid, I am thinking I am going to call me pedi and see if she will switch our medication to Zegerid…
Who has their LO’s on it and do you see better success with it than the other PPI’s…and if so, what did you try before these?
Thank youDecember 3, 2009 at 5:33 pm #64884hellbennt

InactiveThanks, Laurie, for all that info. I’ve been thinking about switching Harry to zegerid & after reading those threads, I may call our doc & ask him to switch. I’m still not sure what to ask him for, though! For anyone who’s used it, what does the dr put on the rx form, & is it generally covered by insurance in that form?
The solutabs still don’t take all the acid/pain away, but using the OTC & bufferbabies may be a lot of unnecessary expense if the zegerid works as well or even better!
And, if I understood it correctly, the zegerid 20 & 40 mg packets are just different concentrations, right? The 40 isn’t a stronger rx than the 20, right?
Thanks!!

InactiveI was emailing Dr P back and forth yesterday… My pedi agreed to let me try this medication even though she has never used it! I am so excited, we go pick it up today.I do believe it is just a different concentration. I will copy and paste his email about how to mix it. He is such a wonderful help.
Tell her the best way to prescribe it is as follows
40 mg packet for oral suspension. Not 20 mg (they cost the same)
Add 6.5 mL tap water to each packet, this will make 10 mL and contain
40 mg. Then add 10 mL mylanta supreme cherry to this. You can do this
in a 20 mL oral syringe. So now you will have 40mg in 20mL. This is
equL to 2 mg per mL. Shake this well an keep in refrigerator. 10mg
would be 5 mL. This is stable for 28 days in the refrig. Here is this as well.
1. Zantac is a weak agent and does not work well in children.
2. Prevacid must be given 1/2 to 1 hr before feeding and never given
with milk or formula as that will breakdown the enteric coated beads
and then render it destroyed by stomach acid.3. Zegerid is the only immediate release PPI that comes as an FDA
approved powder for or suspension and contains no enteric coated beads.
It can be given with milk and with feeding.I asked him why my LO had such hard hiccups multiple times a day, he told me there was too much acid in the stomach, he said Prevacid isn’t working good enough because it doesn’t absorb in the infants tummy too well.
Of course my Pedi isn;t so sure about that, but whatever, she is giving me the medication anyway.I just told my Pedi that I had been doing some research and I had been emailing Dr P about the Zegerid and I wanted to try it, I even gave her the Marci Kids website to look at and she read everything on it.
Denise: I am not sure how it was called in, I looked on my insurance website and it looks like it will cover better than it did the prevacid.
I will let you know.

InactiveWe used zegerid with Sarah and LOVED IT!!!!! It was the first thing we tried (after zantac and compounded omeprazole)…so I don’t have experiences with prevacid.
Also…we used the 20mg packets but I think they are now recommending the 40mg packets for children under two. That just means you’ll have to add the buffer (mylanta) like ImHis stated.Im His – Question though…I thought I had always read the mylanta shouldn’t be added until RIGHT BEFORE DOSING!??! You mentioned mixing it all together and it being stable for 28 days. So it’s OK to mix them together and then store it? I learned the hard way NOT to mix the zegerid with formula until I was ready to feed b/c the formula breaks down the zegerid if mixed together longer than an hour. Also…in the mixing… I had a large 20-30ml syringe that I would mix several packets up with and then place individual doses in smaller syringes with tip caps. It made it convenient to take doses to daycare, out and about etc…Hope that helps! Denise – let me know if you have any other questions!December 4, 2009 at 11:32 am #64904Anonymous
InactiveAmy… what you see posted regarding the Zegerid came directly from Dr Phillips at Marci Kids, so what you see about mixing is his suggestion. What I may do is mix it with the mylanta at the time I give it. It s easy enough to do it then, shoot I am use to giving prevacid twice a day. mylanta 3-4 times a day, gas drops several times a day, this would be a breeze. I hope it works better.
Can you tell me how many times a day you gave it? My pedi wants once a day but I am waiting on her to call me and see why.

InactiveThat’s awesome if you can mix it all together at once! So much more convenient! For some reason I was thinking you couldn’t. If we have to go the meds route again with Emma, I will be using the 40mg packets so it’s great info to know!
I did 3x a day because marci-kids talks about how quickly babies metabolize medicine. What dose did your ped put Connor on? I’d go ahead and split the dose 3x a day or if the dose isn’t as high as marci-kids recommends then maybe try 2x a day?December 4, 2009 at 12:59 pm #64906Anonymous
InactiveI haven’t picked up the medication yet because the pharmacy needed to talk to the doctor, I guess the medication isn’t used around here a lot. I do know she wants me to start off with once a day but I don’t know what ml I will be given, if it is enough I will split it up. She went off of the Texas Children s dosing suggestions. She said we can increase it if needed, she likes to start on the lower in with medication then increase it little by little.
I am so excited to see how well it works… he is doing pretty good but I know he could do better.December 4, 2009 at 2:51 pm #64908Anonymous
InactiveI’m excited for you! That’s so great your doctor is on board and ready to increase if needed! I’ll be curious to find out the dose your doctor prescribed. I wonder why your pharmacist needed to call your doctor? It’s just a box of packets…they don’t have to mix it or do anything…you play the “mad scientist” at home. Chances are your pharmacist wouldn’t even know the correct way to mix it anyway…thank goodness for Dr P! Keep us posted!

InactiveSince the doctor has never prescribed it, she called it in as a compounded medication so the pharmacy would mix it, but when the pharmacists researched it, they found out it gets mixed at home, so they waited to order until they talked to her.
Yeah, so far I really like my new pedi… She listens to me and has been willing to work with me. That is rare.December 4, 2009 at 10:23 pm #64930Anonymous
InactiveWell, I spoke with our Pedi this afternoon (actually the other doc in the practice, the one we normally deal with is on vacation for the next week) and I gave her the info for the marci-kids site and requested that we switch Harry to Zegerid. She’s never used it before either, and I gave her the site info so she could read up on it. I asked that we get the 40 mg packets, and told her how he’s still not comfy on the solutabs, arching/crunching, very gassy, doesn’t sleep more than 20-30 minute blocks a max of 4 times/day, but usually only 2-3 (unless we’re on a longer car ride), and hopefully she’ll go for it. She’s a young doc, only 2-3 years in practice, but I think that’s a good thing. I made an appt to see her on Monday, but I wanted to talk to her today and get the marci-kids info to her now. She said she’d read it over the weekend. I’m very excited, actually, to hopefully have the chance to try Harry on it. Hopefully it’s what he needs to get him feeling better. I was sold on the solutabs and didnt think they’d be a problem for him, but maybe his little system is just that much more sensitive than Dagney’s was and he can’t handle it.
We went to our follow-up GI appt on Tuesday, I asked about Priolosec & felt basically brushed off. I decided to go thru the Pedi again (since the GI keeps telling me she wants to lower the Prevacid dose & that marci-kids is full of crap). I also asked if the Pedi could contact this other GI that i have a 2nd opinion with in January to see if they can move up the appt. If the Zegerid works, though, maybe we won’t need to rush it at least. I may not go back to the old GI, just because now.I decided to go the Zegerid route because I’ve heard all you ladies who were so happy with it, and because it would hopefully be covered by insurance, rather than just going the buffer babies/otc route & having nothing covered! So when I go to the Pedi, I was planning on requesting the max marci-kids dose, does that seem ok to you all? I can tell her that if it works well, we can always try lowering it down the road…Wish us luck!dfb052009-12-04 22:27:07

InactiveGreat news Denise! I hope the new doctor is receptive to the marci-kids information! I think ‘younger’ doctors are better at this kind of stuff too!
There IS something in zegerid that SOME babies have trouble with and I can’t think of it right now…maybe the same as the solutabs? High sodium or something?!?! I hope Harry does well with zegerid though. We sure loved it!Remember though, zegerid isn’t the end of the road either…some babies do great on Nexium. I just didn’t want you to think it’s the last resort.Good luck Monday, keep us posted!December 5, 2009 at 9:10 am #64939Anonymous
InactiveI hope this works out for you Denise. I agree that younger doctors are more open to other things, not so set in their minds about things. Our pedi is young as well and a mother of twins.
Amy..maybe it is the sodium bicarbonate that some babies don’t do well with?
I hope Connor does well on this as well, but I also know that he may not but I am excited there are other things to try like this. We pick it up today.

InactiveDenise-
Have you started the zegerid yet? My almost 4 month old started Prevacid solutabs last Thursday (along with switching to Neocate) and he is so much worse! I’ve read they can get worse before better when switching to Neocate, but I’m also wondering if there’s something in the solutabs that is bugging him. He also will only take short naps (30-40min) four times a day. Getting him to sleep is exhausting and takes forever and he’s so crabby when he wakes up from his short naps but nothing will get him back to sleep.Just wondering how the zegerid is going if you’ve started it! Thanks! -
