InactiveOh Amy, your little guy sounds a lot like mine! He’s actually gotten worse over the last ccouple of days… We went to the Pedi and she “didn’t feel comfortable” going with the Zegerid…I’m very bummed. He’s also MUCH worse today, so I talked to the GI this afternoon and she suggested it could be the rice cereal. Great. So, I’ve switched to thickening w/ oatmeal & he’s woken up twice already tonight…we’ll see what happens. We’re going for a 2nd opinion on Friday, so I’ll go armed with all our marci-kids info and hope they agree to Zegerid.
Was your lo taking anything before the Prevacid? I emailed the guy at marci-kids today for info on buffer babies, so hopefully i’ll also have that info soon too…Good luck!December 9, 2009 at 9:28 pm #65019Anonymous
InactiveDenise,
Yes, our little guys sound very alike! Mine also does the arching/crunching and is very gassy. He also grunts and moans like crazy, especially when trying to get him to sleep.I’m sorry your pedi didn’t go for the zegerid. Hopefully your new GI will be more open to give it a try. I never imagined this would be so frustrating…I just wish someone could tell me the magic potion to make him a comfortable baby! We’ve tried zantac, compound prilosec, compound prevacid, and now the solutabs. Yesterday he had a horrible day but thankfully today was better. It’s just so dang hard to get him to sleep! And then all that work to get him to sleep and he’s up in 30-40 minutes! How long have you been thickening his bottle with cereal? My pedi told me I could try it but I’ve been too nervous to try yet. Has it helped at all? We’re still in our 2 week trial of Neocate with no real improvement with it yet. How long did the neocate take to help your little guy? I found out our insurance won’t cover it either. 🙁December 10, 2009 at 10:33 am #65033Anonymous
InactiveAmy: I do know the prevacid solutabs can cause stomach aches. Dr P with marci kids also said it doesn’t absorb in the stomach that well because of the beads so it may be that your Lo isn’t getting enough do to the absorption.
Denise and Amy: Instead of thickining with cereal, have you tried the added rice starch formula? We are using this and for us it has worked like a charm. No fuss, just mix like normal formula.
Take all the info you can on the Zegerid and give the GI Dr P’s info if you have it so he can call him to ask questions if you can talk him into it. I can give you the info if you need it, or I know it has been posted all over the place on here. It is a lot like prilosec so I am not sure why doctors are not willing to try it. I know it is working very well for us. We are getting much more sleep now. Im not saying it will be the magic you both need, but you never know until you can get a doc to let you try it. I told my pedi since it is safe and a lot like prilosec, what would it really hurt to try it… if I didn;t see an improvement in a week or so I would be more than happy to go back to what she wants to prescribe. So we kind of made a deal. 🙂

KeymasterI do believe the drug in Zegerid IS prilosec- it’s prilosec, in a powder that when you mix it the way marci-kids says, is then a liquid that you can give to your baby at any time- you do not have to time around meals

InactiveLaura, you’re right. Zegerid and Prilosec are both omeprazole; Zegerid is specially made with the buffer solution to protect the medication from degredation in the stomach.
