Big question?

I emailed Marci-kids about Ashlynn’s Nexium dose, dr Phillips said that her dose is not correct and that she should be on Zegerid. Does any know anything about this and how dose it work> We go back to Childrens’ Mercy in Kc the 17th , should I ask her dr about this med, or increase her Nexium? With Zegerid do you need to wait 30 min. prior to eating, is it has strong as Nexium? I hate to switch med and start over again. Any advice would be great.

We have been on zegerid for a year and it’s fantastic! I love it because it doesn’t have to be timed around meals. That always made it really easy and convenient. I think it is “strong” but we never tried nexium so I don’t have a comparison. If the dose if correct, it should work very well for your little one. There have been a few babies on the forum who couldn’t handle the sodium content in the zegerid (caused an upset tummy I believe) but there have been an equal amount (if not more!) of success stories with it as well. If you are able to get your nexium dose increased and you feel more comfortable with that, then I say stay with what you know. But if zegerid is an option I think it’s great too! Good luck!

Hi Stacey!

I wish I could tell you how Zegerid is in comparison to Nexium as far as “strength”. I know Nexium really turned things around for Landen. The Zegerid really upset Landen’s stomach when we trialed it, so I was never able to tell how it would do on his reflux b/c the GI flare just upset things even moreso…however, Landen is not the typical baby. He has an insanely sensitive stomach- even the dye in tylenol and preservatives in baby food, etc. So please, take what I am saying with a grain of salt and give Zegerid the fair try that it’s worth since so many have success. That is, if you want to try it rather than just increasing the nexium dose.

We use Zegerid and it doesn’t have to be time around meals.

In my opinion, i has been a great change for Kendra. We were on the prevacid solutab before changing and she always has poos issues (watery, mucosy). She also din’t sleep well and i noticed she is sleping better and is happier over all. It has caused a bit of constipation for us, but we have kept it on check with lactulose or miralax.

What dose of nexium are you using???

my dd is 19 lbs, we use 20 mg in am, and 20 in the pm of nexium, it has worked well for us, we wait about 45 to an hr before feeding her.

gee! my 4 month old is 18lbs. Just had her 4 month shots. She currently takes a total of 20mg a day. i give her half in the am and the other half at night. I am thinking she needs the does increase dbecause of her weight

if you’re happy with the nexium then stick with it at a higher dose- you can always try switching to zegerid if a higher dose of nexium doesn’t work

Also, stacey, I found that using nexum capsules is better than the suspension, the packets don’t make a true suspension and you lose of the granules, they stick to the sides of the syringe. the beads in the capsules of nexium are smaller than the prevacid beads so easier to mix w applesauce, i find.

Thanks for the input. We go for a follow with her Gi dr thursday. She is starting to have wet hiccups again, so I am sure her meds are going to be increased.

Our GI also told us that nexium is a much stronger med, not studied for long-term use in adults or children. I don’t know if this is true or not.

Adismom- Just curious how you got your doc to give you such a high dose- Did they suggest the high dose or did you have to push for it? I really wanted to try nexium with Hailey when we were desperate, but couldn’t get anyone to prescribe it for longer term use (i.e. longer than a month), and nothing near that dose. If you have a doc who prescribes high doses, maybe add it to the doc recommendations?…

Stcwatt- Dr. Phillips is great. BUT, one thing to know about him is that he recommends zegerid above all else. This is because he developed zegerid, so it’s definitely a bias there. If you’re happy with nexium, then see if you can get the dose increased. If you want to try a different PPI, I’d still try to get on the higher side, but that’s just my opinion.

what are the side effects of nexium with long term use? This seems to be the only thing that has helped with Ashlynn’s pain. I really would like to stay on since we finally got a system down on giving her this med.

Sorry. I just re-read my post and noticed that my tone came off a bit wierd. I was typing really fast b/c I was busy with the kids, and didn’t get a chance to read it before sending it.

I didn’t mean to say that you shouldn’t use nexium. I meant to shed some light on why maybe Dr. Phillips told you to try zegerid (other than the obvious reason). I really wanted to try nexium when I was desperate with Hailey. Here it’s reserved for situations where nothing else will work when it comes to children. Even then, our GI wouldn’t prescribe it for Hailey. When I pressed why, he told me what I wrote in my previous reply. Dr. Phillips told me that only lansoprazole and omeprazole are the only PPIs approved for use in children. But we know that really doesn’t mean much. There haven’t been a lot of studies on anything in infants/children, so I think in the end you just need to go with what you think is right. If you’re worried, ask your doc. I really doubt that anything would happen, probably just that it hasn’t been studied as extensively, if even that is true. I’m certainly no expert. If it works best, then stick with it, and discuss any concerns with your doc. I’m sure he wouldn’t have prescribed it if there was anything to worry about. Good luck. Hopefully a higher dose will give your lo some relief.

has anyone given the full dose of zegerid as stated on marci-kids for a 8wk old? i currently have my son on prevacid 7.5mg solutabs once a day and it does not seem to be helping and was thinking of asking my ped md if she is willing to try zegerid, but unsure if med is really ok for an 8 wk old.

Our daughter Abby was put on Zegerid at only 4 weeks of age at the full dose recommended for her and she did absolutely wonderful!! After a few days, it was like we had a different baby. She weaned totally off of it in August and she is now a happy, healthy 21 month old.

I am wondering the same thing about the Zegerid. I want to try it also.

Robin: What was your daughters symptoms? I am assuming my son has silent reflux (his 2 year old brother did). He is really bad at night. He does not sleep longer than 2 hours at a time day or night, he makes this grunting/moaning noise like he is ALWAYS trying to clear his throat, he gets hiccups after every feeding.
