hang in there! ME, no I would not quit breastfeeding because what if the formula doesn’t help? THEN what? I’m not mad at YOU, it’s your bleepin’ doctor
…
how are poops?
Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:
*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop
*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
if you think it’s something in your diet, it’ll take two weeks to make your milk like the neocate & it’s the SAME AMOUNT OF TIME it would take to see the full effects of switching to formula.
is the zantac dose high enough? how much does baby weigh?
was/is the prevacid dose high enough? were you giving the solutabs on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later?
when you say you’re dairy/soy free, are you checking labels? are you reading ingredients, looking for ‘hidden’ dairy and soy?
YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
there’s a LOT TO READ but it will help you!

Our GI asked me to stop breast feeding for 3 days and feed my 4.5 month old son Neocate only. He has reflux that was bad but now it is beyond bad! I have been dairy/soy free since February and it never really seemed to make that much of a difference, however, I was always too afraid to go back. He was on Prevacid for about 3 months and it was really making him scream! We switched to Zantac and the screaming right after naps stopped! The doc said he wants us to go back to Prevacid. I gave him 1/2a solutab the first night and 1/2 the next a.m., sure enough, the screaming came back. I have decided to not give him anymore and have continued the Zantac. He is SOOOOO miserale since on the Neocate….should I just go back to breast milk? It is of course, the weekend and the Dr. is closed. The Dr. thinks that my son is reacting to something in my milk…..ugh, I am so confused and I HATE this disease!!!
well, ‘where’ are YOU w/ the whole breastfeeding issue?
if you want to continue, you can make your milk like the formula. I have more to share about this, but need your thoughts first.
sounds like allergy/intolerance to me. especially since this all started at about 2.5 months. this gave the proteins time to build up in his system and thus he reacted/is reacting by not wanting to eat, etc.
& by reflux symptoms
Who am I to tell you this? I’m not a medical professional. My baby had severe GERD & I DID give all those meds. not reglan! I stopped that after learning about it & educating myself (here!).
You can ALWAYS back down off of the meds. But for MY baby, meds is what did the trick…

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your quick reply. I’ve seen your posts and appreciate all you’ve said and the help you’re providing. I am wondering based on your experience, does anything in our story look odd or wrong to you? Do you think the doctors are doing the right thing and prescribing the right thing? I’ve seen lots of mention of Zantac and Prevacid and wondered if he should be on either of those.
As for breastfeeding, we were specifically asked to stop breastfeeding just to keep the food consistent while the new drug takes affect, and to continue to keep any kind of allergy ruled out.
He is just in so much pain and it’s so difficult! Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks so much.thelundys2012-05-30 19:08:21
Hi Jill!
I read your intro (https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15153)
So much of this is trial & error! So, try the rock & play sleeper…
welcome!
what formula is your dd (dear daughter) on? or, are you breastfeeding?
I have a LOT MORE to say and most of it’s here, in a link called ‘groupie intro.‘

Hi, I’m new to this, I have an 8 week old baby, she fairly regularly coughs after feeding (breastfeeding) and on and off has brought up milk, which seems to be getting worse but I haven’t really considered it a problem till now.
She had her first lot of Jabs today and has been very sleepy but at 2am she woke with a terrible cry, seemed to have brought up some milk (wet patch next to her head in her basket) and when I picked her up started coughing then seemed to be choking and struggling to catch her breath. She seemed in pain with a terrible cry and wriggling her whole body. This happened twice and frightened the life out of me.
I tried to calm her, holding and stroking her then all a sudden she just fell asleep on me, that’s where she is now, still asleep, I’m too worried to put her back down in her basket and she has now slept past her 3am feed.
Does this sound like a reflux issue? Any advice of info greatfully received.
Thanks x

enorton, my son did not improve until I got him on 30 mgs of Prevacid daily, but he was about 16 lbs when we started it at 5 months. By then he had already developed a feeding aversion and gave up the bottle. I had to spoon feed him his breast milk. He would take it from a spoon but he’d scream at the sight of a bottle. Your doctor is right that that the screaming during feeds could be behavioral, but behaviors have causes and the cause is probably reflux pain.
Spreading the Prevacid over three doses is best. Are you using the solutabs? Giving them on an empty stomach, then feeding 30 minutes later?
My son managed to thrive on 15 ounces of breast milk per day with a little oatmeal twice per day, so don’t worry so much about the amount he’s eating. If his weight is okay, he’s getting enough. If he’s in pain, that needs to be addressed. But it could be that like my son, his pain is better, but he reacts so negatively to the bottle because of the feeding aversion. My son continued to scream at the sight of a bottle even after his reflux pain was under control. Does he seem to be in pain throughout the day, or is he fine as long as you’re not trying to feed him? Does he sleep well? If he sleeps well and cries mainly during feeds, he may not actually be in pain anymore. You said he’s mostly happy and screams only when he eats. To me this indicates a feeding aversion, not that he’s in pain. This is exactly what happened to my son.
I would suggest trying to spoon feed him for a while and see if he forgets how much he hates the bottle. My son never went back to a bottle, but he was much older than your son when we finally got his reflux under control and by then the feeding aversion was deeply entrenched. Your son is younger and may forget. You could try giving him a bottle when he’s sleepy before naps and bedtime, but use the spoon the rest of the day. I used to use a plastic picnic type of spoon because they are deeper than baby spoons. Just prop him up in a bouncy chair and place the spoon on his lower lip. Most babies will slurp liquid from a spoon just to try it out and if they are thirsty or hungry they will continue to slurp. I fed my little guy 3 ounces by spoon about 3 times per day and then he drank a 6 ounce bottle before bed every night when he was falling asleep. That’s all he ate except a little added oatmeal twice per day and managed to grow. I don’t know how, but he did.
Good luck . I know how hard it is to care for a baby who won’t eat. I hope it gets better soon.ndrose2012-04-12 14:01:18
I would also find a IBCLC – int’l board certified lactation consultant…this might make you fell more at ease w/ the breastfeeding aspect/letdown, etc…
the upper GI is not to determine reflux – it’s not to diagnose mild or not mild. the upper GI is to look for structural abnormalities. it’s a snap shot in time, if you were. if your baby didn’t reflux during the upper GI they would not be able to tell you your baby doesn’t have reflux. they could say he did not reflux at the time of the test…
if you’re worried about aspiration, I would TELL dr your baby needs a Swallow Study. This looks at the mechanics of swallowing and they can tell if liquid is getting into the lungs.
as for breastfeeding, there is a lot of information about OAL, overactive letdown, also known as fore/hind milk imbalance…
try unlatching ds after your milk lets down and let it spray into a washcloth first. When it stops, put him back on. and you can also try block feeding -nurse from only one side per feeding and sometimes from the same side more than once to ensure that the breast gets emptied
I know this all sounds so brief and non-emotiona
l- but I like to provide a lot of info as quickly as I can…
what’s his diet? breastfeeding? formula? if formula, what formula?
they need the meds spaced out (3 doses) because their metabolisms are fast & they zip through the dose- it’s not like adults who can take one pill in the morning and have it last all day…
solutabs need to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later
Thank yoU!
anyway, ME, I wouldn’t quit breastfeeding. what happens if you quit and then the formula doesn’t work? and then you have to switch formulas? and switch again?
but that’s ME. YOU are the mama!
I asked about weight gain, bcse maybe she’s outgrown her nexium dose. my baby had to have his meds increased w/ every little weight gain…
to help the zantac go down better find some
some mylanta cherry supreme it’s the one variety of mylanta that does not contain aluminum. it’s hard to find, but you can find store brand equivalents try rite-aid, cvs brand, walmart, target, etc- just look for one that does not list aluminum in the ingredients. you can give 1ml up to 5 times a day- it’s safe, even for newborns. if you see loose stools back off.
You also might try to make your breastmilk more like elecare. it’s hard, but not impossible & it’s ‘just’ two weeks…I did it. I was desperate!
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
the TED (Total Elimination Diet- Dr. Sears is the ‘known’ one) takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat.
Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!

My son (3rd child) was diagnosed with reflux at 3wks old. His Pedi started him on Zantac, but there was no change. (Note: He arched back, cried before/during/after feedings, has congestion, spit up and swallowed back down) At 7wks he went to a CHOP GI Specialist. She put him on Prevacid-compound (1/2 tsp or 2.5 ml). He was good the first 3 days, but hasn’t been since. He is now 13wks and his crying has gone down from 6-7 hours daily to 4-5 daily, but he still seems to be in pain and uncomfortable. Giving him the compound every morning on an empty stomach and not letting him eat til 30 mins after. I try to get him to take all of it, but it is a battle as he always spits it out. He was breastfed and even with a strict diet (dairy and soy free) he did not change. He had the barrium swallow and it showed reflux but pipes were clean. He went to GI again this past week and she has him trying Nutramigen for a week. He is on day 5 of the Nutramigen and seems to be worse. He spits up all the time, has diaper rash, takes 2oz cries calms down and takes another 2oz, and is arching his back again. He is scheduled for an endoscope on April 2.
I am at my wits end and don’t know what else to do to help him. I don’t know if it takes this long to see a change once on Nutramigen or if it’s posible he is reacting bad to it (Note: he would not take Alimentum at all). GI says the next step is Neocate, but that is super expensive and there is no definite that he has a food allergy, no blood or mucus in stool.
Sometimes I wonder if this will ever end…
