Topic: breastfeeding trouble
i’m wondering how much my one month old issue with my three month old is related to acid reflux: she’s been coming on and off the breast during the day, and now also the bottle. the difference, with me, it hurts. i can’t keep doing this. she just upped her dosage of zantac cause she is now 11 pounds, but she’s still having symptoms…i’m wondering if she somehow learned this head turning, pushing off the nipple behavior when she was in pain, and now does it proactively??? her whole body goes stiff, her face gets red and she twists her head so she’s off, then goes right back on and repeats. any thoughts?? help!!!!!!!!!!!
Lavina – sounds like reflux and aggrivation to me too . .. poor thing just
sounds uncomfortable. Its interesting that you noted that you haven’t
been doing the MSPI thing as well as you used to and the behavior at
night sounds OH SO familiar to me. I breastfed for 14 mo’s and honestly
there was a time that I just felt like a walking pacifier .. .the night wakings
were full of non-stop comfort nursing. Like you I was a little back and
forth on the MSPI thing but it turned out it was the thing that was causing
so much night wakings for us. Once I got serious about contolling her
diet and mine the comfort nursing and the night wakings went down
drastically. I should add that I also had her prevacid upped to the highest
dose and she still needed that high dose even after I got the MSPI thing
under control. You could be looking at a need for a med increase and
possibly a need to control dietary things too.
I really wish the doctors put more stress on listening to our babies rather
than training our babies.. . .I always felt like I was “training” a monster by
“giving” in and getting up hour after hour with her and worse yet feeding
her every time. I was concerned but I didn’t know what to do because I
didn’t think what I was doing was the “right” thing. Sounds like
your doing a great job and I really hope something improves soon – I
know how hard it is to pull allnighters with no end in site. Hang in there –
it gets better, do everything you can do to control diet and play with med
doses if need be and then follow Annes advice as well and think about
other possibilities like hernia if things don’t improve within three/four
weeks on a new regimine. That poor lo of yours sounds like she needs a
break and so do you.

lovemysophia 2006-2-10 19:5:49 Kelly – I breastfed my refluxer/MSPIer for 14 months and more often than not she had problems with constipation. Its awful but I can’t remember at what age I introed a sippy cup to my daughter . .. my memory is shot from a year of night waking – lol. Anyway, breastfed babies do great with the straw style sippies and even with regular straws – you could try a little prune juice mixed with water, like a 1 to 2 ratio. Buuut .. .its not really necessary if your already giving her foods like prunes and peaches which should regulate her. Is she constipated in the sense that its hard and she strains or in the sense that she isn’t going as often? It may be that its just slowing down in frequency and its an adjustment stage?
To answer your question – yes, milk that you digest can cause stomach upset of any kind in a bfed MSPI baby because you are passing the proteins on. But if there isn’t wakefullness, heightened irritability day or night, and or increased reflux symptoms I wouldn’t think its the cause

I’d be giving my dh the Look of Death.
Sometimes theres such a thing as “too much honesty”. No wonder the doc wants your hubby to come to the next appt. He probably thinks he’ll get more interesting info out of him.
