Ok, so first things first-let me B*tch. So today I go to pick up the Blueberry from daycare, and the random women that they have in there ask me yet again if I am reeeaaaally sure that I want her eating every two to three hours. Hmmm-let me see-she’s only put on a pound in a month, she’s a mostly breastfed baby, and if I don’t tell you to feed her every 2-3 hours, you only give her a bottle when she screams-which she never does. YES YOU MORONS-EVERY TWO TO THREE HOURS! Ok-so I couldn’t say that to them, thanks for letting me “pretend”…anywhoo-so we address that again, and then I notice that they have her sleep swaddler wrapped around her middle. I’m thinking-ok, they can’t figure out how to use this rig, so maybe I just don’t bring it anymore. So, I ask-hey, do you want me to skip the swaddler. To which they answer no, that they keep her wrapped in it all d*mn day-even when she is awake, and they let her arms out when it looks like she is really struggling. WHAT? I told these two-what on earth makes you think we want that?!!! The swaddler is ONLY for sleep and ONLY in her play yard (that’s where they sleep) if she needs it. We never, ever indicated that she was to be swaddled all the time! Seriously-what place worth it’s salt would ever think that was a good idea-why on earth has no one asked me about this like they have over and over with the feeding?? This stupid place came sooo highly recommended to us and we had to fight to get in. And now these nimrods are telling me that it’s inconvenient to feed and play with my kid! The director was already gone for the day, but I left a very polite message for her asking her to call me back and “coach” me on how to communicate with her staff so that my child will actually be fed and have interactions-not hang out doing an impression of a mummy.
And to be fair-we know that this isn’t the place for us. We have bitten the bullet and hired a nanny, which means hello huge expense, good bye brand name pop-tarts. Oh well-we feel blessed that we can find the cash to buy her the best possible care-even though we both wish that we could afford to be a one income family. Anywhoo-that’s another rant. So the Nanny starts at the end of next week anyway, but I cannot resist the opportunity to rip someone a new you know what over this. I cannot help but think that if they were able to hire and retain staff that would actually stick-then these people would get to know my kid, and me, and feel comfortable saying “what the heck is with the swaddler?” I am so sick and tired of walking into that room and having to say “who are you. I do not know you.”Ok-so I’ve ranted….thanks! Now I have a question. So, I know that I am the ONLY mom who has ever been convinced that my kid is developmentally stunted, but I’m starting to be dismayed that she’s not rolling over, trying to sit up, speak french, anything! She is a little over 4 mths and one of the anklebiters in her class at 5 months is already standing up! Show off… So, what did you ladies do to encourage that development, especially when tummy time was such an issue until we got the ‘flux under control?I am new to this whole reflux thing and have been doing the TED for 10 days now as well as giving my son 7.5 mg once a day of prevacid solutabs. After reading, posting and reading responses it seems that my 10.5 pound 2 month old is not on a high enough dose and being that I have seen little change in him over the last 10 days other than he is sleeping a bit better when I gave him 2 doses yesterday (without asking my Dr.) he slept 5 hours in a row!!! So here is the thing, I have left 3 messages to my sons Dr. who told me to call her in one week (which was 4 days ago) so she could see how he was doing on that dose, well I want to tell her we need to up it and I will need more meds but she hasn’t caled back. So this morning I just made an appt in our pedicatric clinic (we are military so you get who is available) thinking I really wanted to just talk to someone about the meds as well as have them look at my sons still green and mucusy diapers. I just got home and I cried the whole way. SHE WOULDN”T LISTEN TO ANYTHING I SAID!!!!! She basically said she doesn’t undrstand why he is on prevacid since he is gaining weight, that it has to be OAL and that it is just colic and he will outgrow it. I argued and argued with her that I do not have OAL and that he doesn’t get pissed when he first latches on it is more torwards the end of the feed, that he doesn’t cry for hours on end at the same time everyday, that he spits up all the time even when I lift his legs to change his diaper an hour or 2 after a feed. SO this is the advice she gives me…..I should lay down to nurse him for my so called OAL, that I should change his diaper with him in an upright position (WTH!!! try doing that with runny green mucusy poo pouring out the diaper), keep him upright for an hour after feeding (but I thought she said he didn’t have reflux), that the only proven allergy that babies are allergic to in breastmilk is mommy drinking milk, a lactose intolerance. This last thing is what she said when I brought up MSPI and that I had already been off milk and milk products for 5 weeks and that I was now in day 10 of the TED. She obviously has never heard of it and said I need to start eating that it was crucial for breasfeeding as she is a lactation consultant as well. SHe wouldn’t even discuss the MSPI and she was confused about the mucus in his diapers. She couldn’t understand what I meant by mucus and I told her I had the diaper with me but she didn’t want to see it. Instead she tells me to take it to the bathroom and hands me a specimen jar, a tongue depressor and a bio bag and says put some of it in the jar on your way up to the lab we will at least run some tests on it. Okay at least we are checking the poo but how hard would it have been for her to help me out and at least let me do it in the privacy of the office. no I had to go o a public restroom and sit there and scoop out of his saved diaper and pack it all up nicely while trying to deal with a stroller a screaming 2 month old who doesn’t want to be in the stroller. AGHHHHHH maybe this should have gone on the venting page. I just feel like I got absolutely nowhere and spent 3 hours at the clinic/hospital, oh yeah she was running an hour late on her appointments to top things off. SO I have another call into the previous Dr. (#4) and praying she calls me back because I am at my wits end. I know my son, I know my gut feelings on this and I know the Dr. I saw today was a complete idiot. This is not the first time I have advocate on mine or my childs behalf to receive adequate care through military medicine so i guess this is why it aggravates me even more so. The funny thing is if she would have just listened to me, if she would have discussed MSPI with me and why she doesn’t hink it is the issue and had looked at his diaper I could at least feel as if she was trying to help but she just brushed everything I was asking about to the side and stuck with her own theory….how about sticking him on your own lactation consultant all knowing booby so I can go have a freaking milkshake and cheeseburger then!!! Anybody else dealing with military Dr.s? Okay I am done ranting, I am worn out.
Hey Ladies.. First time poster to this forum..
okay so here’s the scoop:when my daughter was born we were breastfeeding. well after a week of being home from the hospital she was screaming in horrible pain. being a first time mom i thought it was my breastmilk and something dealing with me. so i switched her to formula. we started with the Nestle Goodstart (we are on WIC and that is their contract formula) well she decided to puke that up every feeding, didnt want to feed but you could tell she was absolutely hungry cus she would eat hten cry, then try to eat again etc. well finally we gave up and went ot the ER, i told him i think she may have reflux… he laughed in my face and told me she had Colic. well to me, colic is a 5 letter word for I DONT KNOW. he sent me home and told me to deal with it. nice doctor, eh. okay so we switched her to alimentum. that went okay for a little while, alot better on her tummy. then the arching the back, screaming fits, vomiting, spitting flem etc all came back. so our pediatrican had us add Oatmeal to her formula… it wasokay for a bit. but it still wasnt doing the trick she was still crying in pain whenever she’d spit up. finally i threated the doctor if he doesnt want to believe me that she has relfux we’re finding a new doctor that cares about her well being. so he said we’re gonna skip over the Upper GI and go straight to zantac. so we did a very low dosage of that… didnt work, so i upped it. worked for a bit. then i guess since she was growing so was the acid in her belly, so she needed her dosage upped again. well finally the Zantac literally was not doing anything for her.. so we did the Upper GI. according to the specialist, she doesn’t have reflux because she wasnt spitting up at the exact moment he was taking the xray, and said we just need to change the formula. so then she was constipated beyond belief for hte next week. still spitting up like no other. so we tried switching the formula.. Pedi said to do Enfamil AR.. well that made her constipated .. tried Juice, Karo Syrup..nothign was working. so we switched the to Similac version, Sensitive… we were adding the cereal to it.. and still spitting up a bunch. then we went to the Sensitive RS (with the rice cereal already in it) same thing. well now he has us switching her YET AGAIN to Enfamil Lactofree…………! We’ve taken her off the zantac now for a few weeks, she’s not screaming in pain anymore when she vomits… but she’s only eating 3-4ounces every 4 hours and spitting up atleast half of each bottle. i really dont know what else to do. what else to try. someone said something about probiotics, i tried it for a few weeks.. havent seen a difference. i dont know what else to try to help her keep it down. she even spits up like this for her baby food.any suggestions????Topic: formula/lower GI questions?
Not sure where to post, since this is an all encompassing quandry I have thought myself into………Thats what happens at 3:00AM I reckon.
I will write my book then ask your thoughts. When Carson was born I knew he had major GI trouble-spitting entire bottles of formula through his nose and mouthsour facesmajor gas and crampsfeeding aversionswhat I now know to be Sandifers Syndromemajor constipationnever slept unless it was a cat nap in the swingthe list goes on….I forgot major man sized BURPS when you can get them outI breastfed for 3 weeks…..thats all I could take of the gagging and choking-we started Similac Advance with no improvement. Ped switched him to Alimentum-some lower GI improvement best I can remember, at least he could poop on his own.4 months go by with no relief- we go through coumtless peds and 2 Ped GI’sIn June, we see the 3rd GI and he puts him on Enfamil AR, Nexium and does endoscopy as well as a swallow study. Turns out he aspirates thin liquids, hence no luck BF’ing and by now my supply was gone. So for the past 4 months hes been on Enfamil AR thickened further with rice cereal. Reflux is under control but he still has major lower GI issues. He did blood allergy testing and it showed no allergy to 27 common foods? After the past 2 weeks with symptoms getting worse, I am wondering if I need to go back to Alimentum or give the probiotics a shot. At first I thought it was the mega dose of Nexium, but have ruled that out by stopping Nexium for a few days. That was
! I am wondering if it is an intolerance that wouldnt show on an allergy panel. He has had 3 negative hemocults and only has mucus in his stool 2-3 times per month, which the MD said was normal. I use about 4-6 glycerine supp. a week on him. If he doesn’t poop everyday it’s miserable around here. What ever MD started the lie that they only need to go once every 10 days needs to be drawn and quartered! He only sleeps 4 hours at a time and his naps during the day are only 30-45 mins long. This is killing us all. I haven’t even considered CIO because of the ongoing issues. My thoughts are that I need to try the Alimentum once again but I question how I will know if I need to go a step further to an elemental if there is no improvement, other than normal BM’s with Alimentum. Or are there other issues and what are they.I tend to think the lower GI issues got pushed aside at first b/c his reflux was so bad. He has been on 80mg of simethicome with every bottle since 2 months old. If not, you can not stay in the same house with him and forget a car….Did I mention we could have bought a summer home in The Hamptons on what I have spent for toot juice!
Ok – for the questions1. How I will know if I need to go a step further to an elemental if there is no improvement, other than normal BM’s with Alimentum?2. If there are other issues, what could they be?3. I have to thicken his feedings, but all cereals constipate, as well as, simply thick and the likes. Are there any other means to thicken out there?4. Is it normal to have a small amount of mucus in a stool infrequently?5. Am I fooling myself thinking this is going to get better before he goes to college?Any help is greatly appreciated ladies. I have had about enough of playing doctor for one day. My cranium is splitting….I forgot to mention he was 6 weeks early and a c-section baby as a result of PIH.One other thing that may be relative to intolerance- I dont drink milk- EVER not even when I was pregnant- not allergic- just Repulsed. I eat a lot of other dairy though.thanksCarsons_MomKM 2008-09-16 11:38:47 Topic: Could it be reflux?
Hi all,
I’m new to this forum and thankfully I found it because maybe I can get some answers!
I have an almost 7-week old baby girl who was a happy bubbly (and pretty advanced) baby up until about 2 weeks ago when she started to become pretty fussy all day long. It was even worse at feeding time. She is EBF aside from a bottle or two of my EBM, which she hasn’t had in about 2 weeks. That’s part of the problem in diagnosing the situation.
There are so many factors contributing to the problem that I’m not sure what to do, let alone what to do first. There’s the breastfeeding problems – we have latch issues, but have been fighting through them. I produce tons of milk, so I may have an OS issue, and maybe even OALD (though I have yet to see squirting/spraying milk), but LO does choke and sputter through nursing sometimes. She also gulps and squawks through the feeding for the most part. And more than half the time, she seems like she’s in pain, with clenched fists, arched back, whining/crying, etc. Those symptoms led me to my theory on Reflux, so I took her to our doctor, who is on maternity leave, so I had to see someone else in the office. He didn’t think it was Refulx for one main reason – she is gaining weight like a champ. 2lbs in the last 2 weeks for that matter. At 6wks she was 11lbs. She also started spitting up a LITTLE over the past 2 weeks (more so than before), but mostly it would be at every burp – which is another thing – her gas stopped “coming out”. She used to burp and fart all day long, but about this time too, I noticed a decline in that, and then her belly started getting distended and the doctor diagnosed her with “excessive gas” and basically said I had to wait it out, could try some Mylecon or other gas drops, and to try and burp her more. I have been doing that and have also been giving her Babys Bliss Gripe Water, and have seen a SLIGHT decrease in fussyness. But she still has her moments, and the nursing part of it is what concerns me still. (Not to mention HURTS because she thrashes with my nipple in her mouth.)
Does this sound like it could be Reflux? Maybe silent reflux? Should I “go over the helmet” so to speak of my Doctor? I think he would just kind of say I was crazy if I came back again to him with it. She has a 2mo checkup coming next week so I figured I’d wait til then. But it KILLS me to see her in pain like that.
I also bought some Original Fast Acting Mylanta (adult strenght) on the reccomendation of my sisterin-law but am not sure what dose or what to follow to try.
Thanks!

I rented a hospital grade pump to boost my milk supply and I am pumping as much as possible to try and keep up, but I am having to supplement with formula for the time being. I am also going to get some
