So we just got back from the Dr… 12lbs 10 oz so she gained 1lb 4oz in 11 days. 🙂 My Dr. was very happy about that because if she didn’t show a pretty significant gain they were going to have to admit her to the hospital. I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I am going to have to supplement her…I tried EVERYTHING I could think of and nothing was making my supply bigger…and she was draining me at every feeding, plus three ounces of formula no problem. But I am going to start alternating breastfeeding with formula…just because doing both is super hard with a two year old running around. My goal was to make it to 6 months with McKenzie (BF her has been hard…I haven’t been able to eat nearly anything as she seems to react to so much) so I am going to try and keep at least some form of breastfeeding going on for the next month and a half…and then I have pumped a bunch of milk that should allow her to still have breastmilk a few times a day for at least another month. (can you tell I am having a hard time with the thought of giving up nursing, but I am just run down because of lack of nutrition on my part, and I need to give my body a break). Please pray for McKenzie becaues in the back of my mind I keep thinking that she might not be tolerating the formula…but today actually doing one whole formula feeding and one whole breastfeeding seems to be going much better. Thanks for the support everyone. 🙂

Kdub, thank you so much for your reply, and I really appreciate it.
We do give the Prevacid correctly, but I will ask for switching to solutabs.
I am also guessing if my son is allergic to something what I eat (I am breastfeeding). I am off milk for two weeks already and soy for a week, but still didn’t see much improvement. Now I am off eggs for two days and will wait to see the effects. If I do the TED, what else should I take out from my diet except for milk, soy, egg, and nuts?
We will bring him to see a Ped GI this Friday and will definitely bring a poopy diaper with us (Thanks for telling me!).
if you’re using alimentum or nutrimigen and breastfeeding, then your breastmilk should be like those formulas- have you cut out all dairy and soy from your diet, including hidden dairy & soy, meaning those proteins hidden in things as ingredients, for example ‘whey’ and ‘casin?”
may I ask why you’re supplementing? not being anything other than trying to help/understand

I am currently breastfeeding dd, but having to supplement with forumla (about half and half). We tried regular forumlas first and she seemed to have a lot of issues. Switched to Good Start Soy and she did OK but had constipation and still bad reflux symptoms. About 3 weeks ago we switched her to Alimentum and she did really good (no reflux symptoms) for 2 weeks, but the symptoms have started coming back, although not as bad as on milk or soy formula supplmenting.
My question do you prefer Alimentum or Nutramigen and why? Also, I’ve noticed that the Alimentum has a horrible smell that I can barely stand. Does anyone know if Nutramigen has this smell also?
Thanks!!

My son is eight weeks old and has been on Prevacid 7.5mg (powder packets) for about ten days. Though we didn’t see much improvement yet (still arching back, gag, restless sleep, etc), his spit-up did seem to disappear. However, since the day before yesterday, his spit-up came up again and he seemed to be more uncomfortable and fussy.
I know I should wait for another four or five days to see what gonna happen, but I can’t help wondering what should I do if he is still the same after on Prevacid for two weeks. Change to another PPI or what?
My son also has a little eczema, and I am also wondering if he might be allergic to something, since I am breastfeeding. I am off from milk for about two weeks and off from soy for four days. If he is MSPI, at least how many days after I am off milk and soy, then I can see the effect?
I hope that I’ve made myself clear, since English is not first language. Anyway, please help with any advice. I feel so helpless to see that he is always in such a pain.

Hey Amy,
Thanks for the hugs….we tried Zegerid and it was worse than Nexium…she does seem to be doing OK on the compounded prevacid. I am not really sure what to look for in a reaction with the formula…no rashes or anything…and she has gas, but that was the same with or without formula no matter what I ate. The crazy thing is that she has slept through the night the past two nights. I am still breastfeeding her first and then supplementing with formula, so I am feeling better about things because she is at least still getting some breastmilk. Just pray that she does gain weight.
Thanks everyone for the support and prayers…it means so much to me!

DD is 12 weeks today and has been on prevacid 7.5 mg daily since Wed. I have noticed since then (and especially recently that she has gone from one yellow seedy breastmilk poop a day to 2-4 green seedy poops. Is this typical? The NP who put us on prevacid had no info at all. From what I’ve read today she is a) on the wrong dose b) I was told it could be given with feedings etc so she is getting it at the wrong times and c) I was told to give it all at once (but have been splitting it so she is getting a 1/4 solutab twice a day-it made more sense to me as a nurse and she is much better on it). OHY. I guess I am concerned because I wonder if she is developing a foremilk imbalance-but I haven’t changed how I nurse her at all….

Naomi,
I am kind of doing what you are saying in terms of not taking her off completely. But after each feeding I am offering the Alimentum too…but you know, she is eating 2-4 ounces even after a full breastfeed some of the time. Other times she is not eating any. Last night she woke up in some crazy type of pain (this has been going on for the past few weeks with no diet change or so, but we kept saying it was teeth). Anyway, I had just pumped about an hour and a half ago (something I started when McKenzie was 2 months old as she used to consistantly sleep until 4am). I nursed her but she was still fussy…so I gave her the milk I pumped…still fussy…so I gave her the alimentum and she has four ounces and then finally calmed down. ISo she probably had about 8 oz total. I pulled her into bed with me and she sat there peacefully but her eyes were wide open…it took her almost an hour to get to sleep and she kept turning her head back and forth…does anyone know what that might mean? Urgh..I do hate giving the supplement, but I plan on continuing to breastfeed as much as I can…even if it comes down to me just feeding her in the AM and PM…at least she is getting some. Also, I am going to get some pancreatic enzymes because in my research I read that if giving up all the food didn’t help, the mother taking these could.
Ann Marie, I am with you about the possible Neocate issue, but we are going to stay with Alimentum for now and just see.
what you pump is not what baby gets by breastfeeding. a pump is no where near as efficient as the baby!

So we took McKenzie for her four month check up today and basically in one month she has not gained any weight…so I have no choice but to supplement with formula. It is strange because McKenzie pees and poops plenty, but there are two possible things that might have happened. I have been under a TON of stress these past few months (husband lost job, marriage not going well, unable to eat hardly anything due to what seemed to be protien intolerances to EVERYTHING) and my Dr. said sometimes stress can change the composition of breastmilk and it just might not be fatty enough for McKenzie….kind of like if you drink a bunch of water you will still pee plenty but you won’t gain weight. The other thing is a little bit more far stretched, but we started McKenzie on Nexium about the time the weight gain slowed…so maybe that played into it…anyway on a postive note, my insurance is now covering the compounded prevacid (I just have to pay up front for it and be reimbursed) so I have switched her back.
Anyway, my other daughter Brianna had maybe six bottles her whole life and they were all breastmilk…so I am really at a loss as how to do the whole bottle thing. Can someone tell me more about this whole BPA thing…also, do ya’ll always heat your bottles and if so how do you do it? I just feel like my head is spinning all around. I am really sad about this because I really didn’t want to even try formula with McKenzie until she was older…and my hope was that she would grow out of some of these intolerances early and I could just keep breastfeeding. But I do think that the food restriction has taken a toll on my health as I am not really able to have much fat in my diet either. I basically have been on TED for the top 10 for three months now.
Ok so please pray for me and for McKenzie…they checked her electrolyte level and luckily it was not too bad so we didn’t have to admit her into the hospital, but I have to go back next week for a weight check. They are also checking her kidney function. So far the only way I can get her to eat the Alimentum is with some breastmilk in it..but hopefully it will get better over time. I know this is kind of all over the map, but I am a little blindsided by all this.

Thank you for your advice everyone.
Not long after my original post, my LO suddenly reduced her feeding times to about 1/2 an hour and went about 3 hours between feeds, still fussy sometimes but generally happy to feed. We got into a nice feed-play-sleep routine and everything was going along beautifully, so I decided I must have been doing something wrong before or that it was just a phase.
However, over the last few weeks her feeds have deteriorated again. She takes about 5 mins on one breast and then screams, arches her back and acts as though she is scared of my breast, but she is still obviously hungry and can’t go down for a sleep if she has not had a proper feed. I’m resorting more and more to feeding her when she is sleepy, it’s still not a great feed but I get more into her. She hiccups heaps and gags a lot during feeds, but I think that I have a fairly normal flow and let down.
I took her to the doctor last week but he said there was nothing wrong with her and that it was probably just a phase like a growth spurt (even though this has been going on for a couple of weeks now). He was not my normal doctor as I couldn’t get in at my usual one. I think she’s gaining weight ok, we haven’t been to our health centre for a weigh-in in a while but we go back this week.
I’m not sure what to do, does this sound like silent reflux? It’s all that I can think of to explain her behaviour!

I didnt read everyone elses response.. so i am not sure if i am repeating anything..
but.. i am a daycare/preschool teacher.. and recently EVERY baby i have recieved has been a reflux baby! They all take 30 min naps.. that drive me nuts.. 😉 but it is what it is! One of them is 8 months and is now starting to nap longer.. we found out the baby sleeps best in their carseat attatched to the stroller.. so we shake the stroller when they start to wake up. So.. just letting you know we are pretty flexible with the infant age. And for meds.. we give the meds when they need them… thats not a big deal. And for feeding.. we have a bunch of moms that nurse.. but will pump and we feed them pumped breastmilk every 2.5 – 3 hours. If they only want a little.. we save it..and give it an hour later or so. A lot of moms also will send some formula.. if the breastmilk runs out. So.. i HOPE the daycare is flexible with your sister’s little one.. it shouldnt be too much of a problem.. and hopefully the baby will get on a better feeding/napping schedule from being at daycare!
